Why wait until the end of offseason to complain. I said from the start of the off season to get rid of him snd engvall and sign a player for 2.5-3 million instead.

He's not been very good since his hand injury, maybe it needed more time, maybe this is how he will be forever. But that cap space could be used better then on 2 guys who your just hoping dont allow a goal against in thr playoffs cause you will get practically no offense from them.

Your 3rd line should be able to chip in here and there in the playoffs.

Great case and it's a unique set of circumstances because of the pandemic, definitely not the norm.

I agree with this 100%

They're doing it the right way IMO after perusing the Leafs' development camp roster: the 18 yo's are mostly invitations from the OHL who didn't play at all last season. The other thing I'd do is to blanket as many development camps as possible (the Leafs sure as heck have the manpower). Other teams have undoubtedly invited some interesting players as well but may not pull the trigger on ELCs. The Leafs only have 3 more contract spots this season but these slide on ELCs plus there will be 11 UFAs after the 2021-22 season plus 2 or 3 unqualified RFAs.

moving Mikheyev and Engvall frees up enough money to replace them with one league minimum player and one max $2m player.

It does? I assumed since right now it says we have 15 forwards currently? This is just a rough mash up

Signing - matthews - marner
Ritchie - tavares - nylander
Bunting - Kerfoot - Spezza
Kase - Kampf - Simmonds
Brooks

That doesn't work? I'm not sure. Even taking Gabriel out to add an extra defender too?

Sure if you look at data but the game isn't played by data.

If you look at data alone there are tons of players are 60 point pace given ice time given key opportunities and all that beautiful stuff

He was paired in 2nd line with Tavares and Nylander. He failed to produce

He was with Hyman and he failed to produce

He severely over achieved in his rookie year so everyone holding on to that memory

Kind of Yakuov for 5 years He was drafted. They are not very good at hockey
Of course. Data is just there to support what your eyes are seeing. He needs to be able to finish on these chances. But the quantity of HDCF cannot be overlooked. There obviously is the possibility that he never finds an average scoring touch. But his rookie year would indicate that's well within his skillset. He did however have a very serious injury in that year that could have impacted his ability to do so. But regardless, his HDCF production does not align with his point totals.

When comparing the amount of HDCF that he gets vs. his peers in and around the same amount over this last year, we can see that Micheyev was drastically behind most of the people around him. However he was able to get these HDCF while playing significantly less TOI. Not to mention more time on the PK than most on this list. For reference, the list of players below ranged from 53 to 49 HDCF at all strengths. My previous post I mistakenly had the HDCF chart at 5v5, but it still tells a strong narrative.

Micheyev's 17 pts was the lowest on this list of players. Despite generating in and around the same amount of high danger chances. I think we can all agree that his finishing abilities are below average, but they certainly are not as bad as they were last year IMO. I'd go as far as saying he will never have a year where he is less efficient than he was last year. But that's completely speculative on my end.

I really don't like him asking for a trade TBH, and I really don't like the fact that he's asking for an expanded role. I'm just not sure I'd pen him in on the Tavares line to appease him. I'd give him a handful of prove it games, and if he produces, it will be his spot to lose. To me he deserves a look. And who know if that's all he was asking for in the first place. Because last year Simmonds, Thornton, Kerfoot, and Gally all got better looks than Ilya. So I can see why he may be frustrated

their not going to trade him. hes too valuable at that cap hit.
the only wart in his game is that he doesnt score enough for the chances, most of which he generates by himself. So what ... if he shoots even 8% (still below league average) he close to a 20 goal scorer.

If he performs at a similar level to last season, he will be granted his wish to be moved off of the TML team. That is not too long to wait.
Good luck Soup - I'm pullin' for ya

On a list of things the Leafs should be worried about, this falls at about 5 in terms of importance. So I'm not going to sweat a 3rd year marginal player who thinks he should be getting more icetime. However, getting Rielly signed, one of the core 4 traded (selfish Mitchy) to get us a more balanced salary structure, hoping Matthews wrist is ok and doesn't affect his shot much, and praying that our goalies can form a decent tandem is far more important to the success of this team at this time. If Miky sulks, trade his ungrateful ass as soon as possible.

He's not good enough to request a trade.

The way he played last year, he should be grateful to play regular minutes in the NHL. There are a lot of other nothingburgers out there that would die for his opportunity.

Why would the leafs listen to his request? shut up and play. You signed the contract, you are beyond terrible and now your bitching. Id trade him for a bag of pucks but now that's demanding a trade.. let him sit out. Loser

He wants someone to pay for his not wearing wrist protection, resulting in injury and never the same since...like it wasn't any of his own fault.

Thinking about it more, reads like the agent trying to pressure the Leafs to giving him more opportunities (top 6 as opposed to top 9 usage plus pp) heading into a contract year.

It's up to him to build chemistry though. He wasn't able to.do much of that last season when he played with Nylander and Tavares.

And also up to him to fix that shot accuracy. That's not a usage/team problem. That's on him

His agent is Dan Milstein but because Mikheyev has no leverage or brand recognition this is probably the closest they come to a “pressure move.”

So if I’m reading this right he gets decent high danger scoring chances but not sufficient points to back it up. It seems like we are hearing the same scenario about more of our players. Doesn’t this just point out that most of these stats mean very little in the actual real world of success?

Sure. See ya' later alligator :)

I don't know what kind of market there is for a pending UFA with his scant accomplishments at his price.

If there's no market, put him on waivers and send him down if he passes through. If he doesn't even want to be here, he has no future in the Leafs' organization and there is no purpose in investing any further development in him.

Did Dubas sign this guy?

Why is he turning on him? He's been given a generous contract, opportunities in his first season in the top 6, 14:13 TOI last season, etc.

I'm pretty shocked.

That is certainly one way you could look at it that would be a completely valid way of thinking. Another valid way to look at it would be to take his less than average pt production as the statistical outlier that it truly presents itself as.

My viewpoints on Ilya are not purely on stats. Far from it. I watch every game with my eyes, just like everyone on here. This is a guy who generated an abnormal amount of HDCF based on his ice time, and was absolutely trash when it came to finishing. I am looking at the fact that he was able to generate those chances as a positive, and am basing his less than stellar 6.54 S% as the only reason he failed to produce. That absolutely could be what Ilya's limitations are. I really don't think he will ever be an elite finisher. But I think we can all agree that we can all but expect a little improvement on that scoring efficiency. Especially if he is able to generate the same quantity of chances that he did last year. I really don't think being over 10% SP is out of the question really.

If he wants more time in the top 6, how much worse, if at all is he compared to Gally and Thornton. I really don't like his "demand" for a greater role, but it's not like it couldn't work. Even if it's just in a limited capacity

Ya I agree.

I love what he brings, He plays the right way. I actually think he has way more to give in terms of offense. I would not be surprised if he put up 50+ pts in the right situation. His speed and defensive anticipation is very good. He creates so much from those 2 abilities alone.

I really think it must be very challenging for him being the only Russian on the team. Especially once Barabanov was traded. His English is not that great, and the only person that likely speaks Russian is Nik Antropov. It would be terribly lonely, especially on the road. When you combine that loneliness with the fact that Galchenyuk was instantly getting inserted above him on the depth chart last year, I can totally see where he is coming from. IMO, I think we all see him as an amazing checking line winger, But that had to have pissed him off seeing a newcomer with a similar skillset instantly get more opportunity. Seemed like we tried everyone on the team at 2nd line LW last year, except for soup lol.

But if he is truly unhappy, we have to maintain a good relationship with Dan Milstien. He's been the honey hole for cheap euro talent for us. Seems like we sign or draft 1 player of his every year. It is important to keep his clients happy IMO

I wouldn't worry about that. He's sold us some right old shit in the past.

It's almost like he had one of the worst injuries imaginable short of actually getting your arm cut off for shooting accuracy/power.

Would you prefer him to.. take less shots from in close? Even if he had a 0% career shooting percentage, every time he is getting a shot from that close in is a minute that the puck isn't in our zone and the opponent's defense isn't doing their job well enough.

Would you prefer a Vesey who generates nothing but cleans up garbage goals slightly more often? Better "real" production at the cost of worse "fake" stats, seems like a slam dunk upgrade no?

Hard not to think about his 1.6M + Kessel's 1.2M going to one of Rielly or Jack. Still not enough but we're closing the gap a bit at least.
