Awful backchecking and coverage by SKA on that save in the gif. He had poor lateral mobility too, but he made a great athletic save to cover it up.

sorry I haven't kept up with this thread, aside from those 2 minutes in OT, has Shesty played at all in these playoffs?

Nope. But in this case, I think it's fine to say that the results are speaking for themselves for Costco, aside from a few hiccups with those center-ice goals and the 5-4 game recently (which Shesty got the OT win for).

He's been better than the regular season, but he's also looked shaky most of the games he's been challenged. If you give someone such a long leash, they are bound to play well once in a while.

Most goalies in this situation where they are starting despite being the inferior goalie would not have gotten the leash that this guy has. Shestyorkin should be starting by now.

But he isnt because Koskinen is the veteran.

Its the same thing that is happening with Buch. And while I dont agree with it, the reality is this is how coaches coach. They go to veterans who have been around. This isnt a shocker. He may have been shaky, but he has won regardless and thats all that matters.

I said the same thing in my post. He's starting because he was the winning goalie when they won the Cup two seasons ago. I completely understand that, despite disagreeing. We'll see how it goes. Magnitka and our boy Bereglazov look like a real challenger for SKA in the final.

Did we sign Bereglazov? Or are we close?

Not yet, but Friedman dropped the hint, and when him, McKenzie, Dreger drop hints, there's a good chance its all but a done deal that is just waiting to be announced. I don't know why Friedman would specifically mention us and only mention us, unless we had a deal in place to be signed once their season is over.

Koskinen is not the inferior goalie. Shestyorkin is, at least at this point.

What makes great goalie is performing at an elite level year in and year out. Consistency. Reliability. It isn't one rookie year of great play. Until Stestyorkin can replicate this year's performance, he should not be considered among the upper echelon of goalies in the KHL. He's a young kid with amazing potential, but only has 1 year of elite level professional hockey under his belt. He still has MUCH to prove.

You are right. McDavid isn't one of the NHL's best players, not enough professional experience. :sarcasm:

I guess Sorokin is worse than Fasth as well because Fasth has NHL experience.

Couldn't this treatment be a good thing for us? Potentially makes him more likely to bolt for the NHL if he keeps getting the shaft.

Quit comparing Shestyorkin to McDavid, that's total ridiculousness. McDavid is a one in a gazillion generation talent.

And whats Fasth got to do with anything? Unlike Koskinen, he's not, nor ever been an elite KHL goalie. And notice, Sorokin was benched for Fasth in the playoffs.

Again, Shestyorkin, despite one great rookie regular season, still has a lot to prove if he wants to be considered among the league's very best......unlike Koskinen who has been elite for years now, was voted as last years World Championships best goalie, has won a Gagarin Cup, and is currently sporting playoff stats of 1.58 .938.

Where are all the posts? You guys living on mars?

Igor replaced Koskinen in the first down 1-0, they won 2-1 in OT. They are one win away from the Gagarin Cup finals. He must've made like 30 saves, excellent performance. He had a point blank save at the end of regulation that saved the game. Koskinen seemed to have a groin problem. I don't want to wish injury upon him. Hopefully he's ready to play next game, and the coach decides Igor's excellent performance was good enough to stay in net. Probably was the best game he's played in his life, considering the circumstances. He hasn't faced a shot in a game in a month and a half, thrown into a high pressure Conference Final with no margin for error, and he made no errors.

Nice to hear. Why did Koskinen leave the game?

It looked like he stretched for a save, and hurt his groin. I'm not going to speculate on the seriousness, I have no clue, but it certainly looked like a groin problem. He came back to the bench later in the game, but I assume he would've regardless, unless he was transported to the hospital or something like that. If Igor had to come out, he would've had to go back in, even if he was injured.

Got the game on DVR. Will enjoy watching it tonight. Thank you for the heads-up. If Koskinen could come back into the game he would. Shesterkin is likely to be the starter the next game too.
