Terrible goal to give up no matter what. Koskinen will continue getting starts while SKA is winning even with all these soft goals, but if the team falls 0:2 or 1:3 at some point I'm pretty sure Znarok will pull a trigger on goalie switch.

Watch it a few more times. It's like some weird physics vortex at work. The puck remains at most 6 inches off the ice for the first 50 feet and then for no explainable reason about 20 feet in front of the goalie changes direction on a dime and rises nearly three feet off the ice. I honestly thought it was fake.

It looks like it was deflected by the last defenseman back.

He's more experienced though than Igor, gotta play him. :sarcasm:

At what point do we call it senility instead of experience? In 30+ years of watching hockey, I've never seen 2 red line goals in 2 games in a row. This goal is particularly embarrassing. It definitely did not bounce of change direction. It did not go into the upper corner. It just went through his legs. Any beer league goalie would be embarrassed of this disaster happening once, much less twice.

CSKA must be really excited that they will have to face Costco instead of Shesterkin, who dominated them every game, even shutting them out.

The oaf played well today, 4-1 win. They are up 3-1 in the series. Igor's not playing in this playoffs, unless they go down like 2-0 or something like that. Of course if you give any pro goalie that many games of playing poorly to find their game, they should eventually.

Any chance of signing this kid to a North American contract if Raanta goes to Vegas and he gets to split time with Hank next season?

Very unlikely. He has two seasons after this one left on his contract. Usually buyouts are for one year. If SKA wanted to let him go, I guess he could technically buy out two years, but that seems really unlikely. And I don't think they want to release the KHL's best goalie for no reason. Why would any team do that? What incentive do they have?

I really don't know how the Rangers could get him over here. Could they try to get creative and hold Pirri's RFA rights hostage in exchange for him joining SKA in the KHL? Would Pirri even want to do that? Maybe Clendening or Hrivik?

In my attempt to look for photos of Buchnevich and Bereglazov, I encountered these two photos of Buchnevich and Shestyorkin. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble uploading pictures today, so just click the links. I thought these were both pretty funny photos. I'm glad all these players know each other so well. It'll probably make Igor's transition easier in a few years having Buchnevich and maybe Bereglazov and Zborovskiy on the team.

The 2 fluke goals look bad, but you realize Koskinen is 7-1, 1.58, .936 these playoffs. Second to only Garipov for goalies still in the playoffs. Virtually the same stats as Shestyorkins regular season numbers.

Would anybody mind giving me a little context on the situation? Is the goalie playing in place of Shesty a revered vet for the franchise? If that's the case I honestly wouldn't be too mad, especially if Igor is going to get starter minutes there or somewhere next season.

He's 28 years old and only in his third season with SKA. I think what's really given him the nod in the POs is his PO success during the past two seasons with SKA.

2014-15 Playoffs 22gp 1.61GAA .936SV%
2015-16 Playoffs 15gp 1.47GAA .949SV%

Kind of hard to say no to a guy that has performed so well in the POs for your team. And despite the 2 Red Line goals he has let in this PO season, he stats so far are 8gp 1.58GAA .936SV%.

Thanks for this. In this case I wish they would've just traded him, but the playoff narrative makes it digestible if they're dominating the league like they are.

First two rounds, if not more, a team like SKA should breeze through. There's really only an outside chance that Shesterkin will get to start in these playoffs. Injury or going down 1-3 or 0-2 at best.

Shesterkin is signed for two more years after this one. Very likely he will be a full time starter next year, including playoffs, Koskinen is in the last year of his contract, I think.

The media has really been hounding Znarok about the goalie situation. It quieted down after yesterday's game, but if they are down in a series with Koskinen playing poorly, I think he gets the hook.

Why is the media be hounding him? Is it the 2 Red Line goals Koskinen gave up?

I think its a combination of things.

The KHL really has three powerhouse teams at the moment, and the other two started their young goaltenders, Samsonov and Sorokin, over more experienced older goalies to start the playoffs. Since then, they've both lost their starting spots, but Shestyorkin is the only of the three that hasn't played in the playoffs yet. I think the media is eager for him to get a chance, especially since its been a topic thats been thrown about pretty much all season who would be the playoff starter. Shestyorkin outplayed Koskinen all season, so any struggles Koksinen had, and the topic was going to come back up again. They weren't really tested in the first round, but in this round, Dynamo has given them a few good games, and Koskinen has let in some bad goals, including the two from center ice.

Eh, lots of teams start only one goalie in the POs and ride him all the way...unless he falters. Kosco has been SKA's Henrik Lundqvist in the last two POs. Further, everyone knows Shesty is going to be a Ranger one way or the other. The loyalty to SKA is not there like it is with Kostco.

I get your frustration, but it is what it is and I have no problem understanding Znarok's decision.

Do you remember the question you asked me?

You asked me why the media is hounding the coach, and I answered why I thought so.

SKA won today 2-0 to advance to the conference finals. Koskinen only faced 4 shots in the 1st, 4 in the 2nd, and finally 12 in the 3rd...for a 20 Save Shutout. I don't see a way in for Shesty yet. :dunno:
