If you were trading one player on this team, who would it be?

While I love Kadri's game for the most part, his nearly superhuman ability to get himself suspended when needed the most negates any desire I have to keep him on the roster. I miss Tucker, he played on the edge but did so without killing his team in the playoffs through needless suspensions.

it took a bit more to get suspended when Tucker played. But I get your point.

Right now? Holl. Liljegren can do a more than adequate job replacing him and his cap hit/ role might give him decent value in a trade. Sitting any of Dermott/Sandin/Liljegren for him is no good.

For all those trading Holl away because of Liljegren (and Liljegren should never come out of the lineup again)......what happens when the D core gets even a single longer term injury if Holl is traded?
Menell is an option.

Nylander - will break my heart when he leaves, but his contract + production/performances right now mean he's probably the 1 piece that nets you the biggest return.

But not the biggest return, which is cap space. Marner is the guy that gets you that. And I think he is tradable (is that a word?) at the end of the season and after his signing bonus is paid. Then he is essentially an $8m player for 3 years to a team that doesn't spend to the cap, and that gets that team to the floor.

That's my guess.

Something has to give even though I still believe in Mitch. I thought it would be Nylander but I think I was wrong.

I would want to give Leafs management a smack if they even hinted to Tavares they wanted him to accept a trade.

Like, remember what went down with Sundin? Cliff Fletcher throwing him to the media to try and change his mind?

Yuck. Leafs need cap space and Marner is unfortunately the guy that will get them that.

Tavares.....well if he gets really bad he goes to "Robidas Island" basically.

I have never said anything about the Kadri trade, because, I wanted to be positive.. But DUMB ASS, has let the two most courageous guys this franchise has had, in his short time here..

Zach Hyman, lol, how do you let that guy walk.. U just don't.... I have to say, I did get swept into the fire Babcock crew.. YA, I joined them..

Ask yourself would Zach Hyman even be playing hockey, if it weren't for Mike Babcock....I don't think so...

Would Kyle or Keefe have defended a guy like hyman...

HECK would any of us do what Babcock did for this guy....

And what else did dumb ass do for us, he traded my favourite leaf of all time... Nazem kadri...

r sure, the most intospective look into a Toronto Maple leafs players life

Thanks for reminding me to check out Hyman's contract.

Holy crap it's actually BACK loaded!

I won't argue about Kadri, because I'm a massive fan, but if you're actually a Leafs fan would you want Hyman on that contract? Wow!

I would do addition by subtraction first. ABS. If it can be made into an acronym it counts as one move: Holl and Engvall. Use their combined cap on an actual good depth player. 3.25 mil on Holl and Engvall is a fireable offence. Get one 3 mil player who will actually do something positive consistently.

You can even sit on it and let it become 6.5 mil at the deadline. Don't tell me we're scared to go half a season without these 2. Got some hungry guys on the Marlies that want a shot. Ho Sang has 5 goals in 6 games

In the order of preference

  • Holl
  • Kerfoot
  • Ritchie
  • Tavares
  • Marner
  • Kase
  • Dermott

Everybody else I am happy to keep. That said, if Gretzky was traded anybody can be traded. If it makes the Leafs a better team then anyone from the squad is available as far as I am concerned

We have 4 powerplay goals and 2 wouldn't exist without Ritchie

Mark my words, once the team starts playing to it's potential you will finally see why Ritchie is here. One small example, swap out Marner and put Ritchie on PP1 for the screen and I guarantee you Matthews and Nylander start sniping home PP goals and Ritchie/Tavares bang home some PP rebounds. Ritchies current play, excluding any dumb penalties he has taken, is more symbolic of the teams overall play more than it is Ritchie being washed. Ritchie has a skillset we didn't maximize yet.

For me, I’d first ask Tavares to waive his no trade and shop him.

I think he’s going to slow down even more in the coming years and he makes big money. I’d move him for anybody decent i could get, assuming he would waive.

If not, IMO, it’s gotta be Marner. Nylander is better when the games matter and he’s significantly cheaper. I’d keep marner if he was on a Nylander contract but he is not.

I wonder if a team like Arizona would take on marner then trade him back with 4-5 mil retained for picks. Could be something to consider.

Who is the most realistic Toronto can trade?

Morgan Reilly his AAV is manageable by most teams and the return would most likely be cheaper than his new deal .
Something like straight up to Seattle for Larson or Oleksiak

Rielly's NMC is back-dated into the remainder of his current contract, so he has full control of his destination.

Not this year though.

Wouldn't be my choice, well if they hadn't signed him to an extension it might be, but you really can't treat players that way when they accept less to play than they'd have received on the open market.

Nylander trade really doesn't help because to get similar quality in return it's only going to be one player back.

If you move a double digit you can get back two good players.

Not sure what you mean by 'not this year', but his NMC is active now as per capfriendly.

Morgan Rielly Contract, Cap Hit, Salary and Stats - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

CLAUSE DETAILS: No Move clause negociated for the 2021-22 season as part of his 8 year extension signed on October 29, 2021.

I agree that it's in poor taste to flip a guy immediately after extending him though.

Rielly wouldn't be the guy I'd look to move as he has been a good soldier and can reasonably be expected to perform at a 7.5 million dollar level, or at least close to it.

Marner.

Simply put. You can fill 2 positions on this team with players either acquired in deal or acquired in next seasons FA for his cost.

Personally I would flip him for 1 solid young starting top 6 forward type and a bunch of picks. The player coming back shouldnt cost more than 5-6 million annually. I would then use the remaining of his cap number and expiring contracts next off season to go shopping to fix team.

If the team is hovering around .500 in the new year with similar frustrating traits, you put Marner and Nylander’s name out there and see what you hear.

Matthews and Rielly are C and D.
Tavares is C with a NTC.

Marner is a luxury player, and you trade your luxuries first when you have to sell.
lets look at that in home appliances category, do you sell your big screen tv first (likely at a huge loss) or a toaster or a microwave which are easy to replace when you get back on your feet?

you never sell your best assets in any situation unless its a last resort, as they are the hardest to replace, and often you never can.

for the right return Marner is an obvious pick as he can get back the most, as far as easier to move and replace, Kerfoot, or Mik.
