If the NHL does NOT participate in 2022, which format do you prefer?

I'd rather watch a combination of amateurs (including university and american collegiate players) plus players under the age of 20. It would essentially be a WJHC on steroids imo.

Remove the event completely.

It's supposed to be the best in the world, not scrubs.

NHL will participate in the Olympics 2022, because the league wants that Chinese market.
If that's what the NHL wants then what they need is the hockey version of a Yao Ming type Chinese player. A Chinese born hockey "star" that plays in the NHL. A Chinese face which the NHL can use to sell merchandise to the huge Chinese market.

The number crunchers will be doing apples to apples comparisons when this tournament is over. The NHL bean counters will know without any doubt whether or not the owners make more money by going, or by not going. Similarly, the IOC, and any federation bidding on future games, will know exactly how much money was lost as a result of the NHL not participating. It will be interesting to see the numbers.

Olympics soccer has u23 plus 2(?) overagers. Maybe it would work for ice hockey too?

But leaving it untouched is fine too

The "make the Olympics junior-only" idea is stupid. There's already the annual IIHF U20 tournament.
There's also the annual IIHF World Championships. Does that mean having an Olympic tournament is stupid as well? The idea behind a U20 format is to level the playing field and have the best U20 players in the world attend.

Then you still need the NHL to agree, though
Yes, you are correct, this would require NHL participation, but not to the extent of allowing all players. Plus, the NHL would not have to shut down for 3 weeks if they are only releasing the U20 players. The NHL has a decent relationship with the IIHF and the current U20 tournament. Perhaps it's wishful thinking on my part that the NHL could work with the IOC on an agreement with U20 players.

China is gonna buy into a club in KHL and start growing hockey and begin producing talents.
They will prob shell out some $$ to Mr NHL commisioner and owners so they can swim in money until they choke in the dollar bills them greedy *blank*.
NHL players will be allowed in 2022 and then the NHLPA will start blaming the owners again for not allowing players to go to the international events and no one questions how awful an union they have been and continue to be... So we get another NHL lockout in 2025

If you want more predictions its gonna cost ya $10.

This is just my opinion do it could be very far off the reality, but I think that the NHL opposition to the IOC is vastly overrated. I think they did not care much this year because of the poor time zone and not very interesting market, so they took the chance to use the olympics to put some pressure on the players since the CBA discussion may get heated. The insurance costs, the fear of injuries, are not very relevant and were used mostly as an excuse to justify the decision.
I think that once a deal is settled with the NLPA everything will get back to normal. Hopefully.
Or even better I wish for a real tournament organized with cooperation between iihf and nhl, while using a format like the one you described for the olympics. More youth to showcase with a couple of experienced who cares about the olympics.

I voted "Players under the age of 20 only". It just seems like such a natural match. The WJC is held after Christmas every year. Just postpone it two months and it's perfect.

It's also highly competitive, and would do wonders for the prestige of BOTH tournaments. A half-assed scrubs tournament is not great for the Olympics, and the WJC has lost some traction in recent years. But together they could be bigger than the sum of their parts.

I voted for this as well. Just move the WJC every 4 years.

There are so many upsides to this:

- It gets rid of the IOC and the NHL fighting
- I don't have to listen to Bettman anymore
- It allows the WJC to be moved around the world to places that would never host it otherwise
- It's not in Canada every 2nd year
- It would cost less to send your players ( insurance costs, etc. )
- The players would love it. Winning a medal before you even play a game in the NHL.
- I would rather watch some kid give his all than Mason Raymond.
- and more.

JMO.

Moving WJC to Olympics is horrible idea IMO. If player is born in a "wrong" year, he would most likely never be in the Olympics just because of that. Very rarely we see three-year-underaged in the team (none in this year's WJC) and not much 2000s either. These would be overaged by the next tournament.

Problem is there is not much hype around World Cup especially when they do things like ''Europe'' and ''Youth of North America'' it kinds of destroy the idea of World Cup
It's just a mish-mashed NHL tournament, though. If it was a proper IIHF tourney then it should matter (i.e., the one we already have) but NA doesn't like not having control, just like at Olympics.

Thats no where close to the same rules socces aka football has for olympics. U23 is better.

World cup is a fookin joke with fake teams

If NHL players are not allowed to participate in the Olympics in 2022 then the IIHF and IOC should make it an U-23 tournament, just like the soccer tournament in the summer Olympics.
The ongoing tournament and it’s format rally suucks. I’m begging you mister Fasel! Please do something!
Why? There are plenty of non-NHL players as shown by this Olympics and the hockey has been exciting to watch from a neutral stand point.

And how to get that? Hockey programs in China and young kids watching NHL players in the Olympics to gain interest for the league.

Funny fact: the NHL believes in a free meal, too.

Look, people claim that the IOC takes best players for free. True. The NHL takes best players for (almost) free. What is a difference between them? Non.

Wait...what? The NHL pays its players, how are they taking them for free? Oh, are you referring to this "transfer" thing that you Europeans keep clogging up this thread with? It's getting really old skipping over those posts. The jealousy over the NHL being the most financially powerful and best level of competition in the world is getting old. If you want the European leagues to become the top leagues then start paying the players huge money to play in them. In return, prepare to pay through your nose to buy tickets to the games.

Otherwise, this is how it works. Player gets offered huge contract from NHL team. Player can either decide to accept the huge contract or stay in the European league. End of story. Does the NHL pay transfer fees or development fees to the NCAA, the USHL, the CHL, etc, etc? No, they don't.

As far as growing the game, there are a lot of franchises that put a lot of effort into growing hockey in their city/state. Look at what programs Vegas is involved with in Nevada, the Blackhawks in Illinois, Blues in St. Louis, Flyers in Philly, Wild in Minnesota, etc, etc. Foundations, sponsorships, youth scholarship programs, equipment drives, and on down the line.

I realize the NHL owners don't have the best reputation for being altruistic, but I also think they take a lot of unnecessary and unwarranted criticism too.

I find it so weird North Americans are so defensive of the nhl profitability.

It blows my mind that people are willing to defend billionaire owners. Only in North America and more specifically hockey, I have seen that more importance is put on club than country. Almost every other sport outside NA has a country over club mentality

The NHL will be participating in 2022 because they want to break into the Chinese market. All the reasons they gave for not going this time around will still apply but suddenly won't matter in 2022, because China.
