If it's not Jack Campbell who should be the Leafs new #1 goalie?

Well if we don't get Jack, Gibson sounds like about the only other possibility. At least I haven't heard about anyone else that might be available. But ANA knows how desperate we are so if they're smart, they'll hold out for a massive haul. I have no idea what he might cost, a 1st and a 2nd + Knies maybe? Does that sound about right? Is that a better option then signing Jack at 5x5?

Tragedy for the Leafs. Fantastic for Bettman. ;)

I consider myself a logical person but admit I have been emotionally invested in the Leafs since I was a young lad. That said, I only really let off steam in the face of injustice, in any pursuit in life.

The Leafs faced such injustice that series. One can only hypothesize as to why...

Just sign Campbell, IMHO. Price will come down, then sign him.
There aren't any good options in my opinion . . . Leafs are in tough here.
I agree with this. There is no one better than Jack available.

Oettinger. Offer sheet will just get matched. Work out a trade, even if you have to deal a piece that hurts.

I reckon that's a bit Ritzy - maybe a bit under that?
I have a feeling it would cost more than that, I really don't know though and obviously I hope I'm wrong but yeah, I feel like that won't be enough to get it done, especially if it gets to the point where all the UFA goalies have signed elsewhere and the whole world knows how desperate we are.
Have to also look at the ANA side. Not sure how much long term value Gibber has for them. They probably don't want another bad stats year and him getting older before they move him. And with all the goalies signed that also means less bidders.

If they feel now is the time to move and Leafs become their best option we get some leverage.

In four seasons on the job, Burke’s perceived sins were many, chief among them a penchant for using copious profanity in otherwise polite company and a failure to preside over a playoff team. But to some eyes, his fatal flaw was a blind spot for puck-stoppers. Burke arrived in town boasting of a roster-construction method that started “from the net out.” Alas, the Leafs ranked last in team save percentage in Burke’s first year on the job. In the following three seasons combined, they were second-last. How’s that for improvement?

“You didn’t solve our goalie problem here,” were some of club chairman Larry Tanenbaum’s last words to Burke on the day he was fired, according to Burke’s memoir.

.......................

“I need one. I’ve got to get one. It’s as simple as that,” Ken Holland, the Edmonton general manager, was quoted as saying this week.

Heading the unrestricted free-agent goaltending crop available, beginning Wednesday, are Campbell and Darcy Kuemper, the latter the starter for the Stanley Cup-winning Colorado Avalanche.

Possible trade targets include Ottawa goaltender Matt Murray, a Stanley Cup champion in Pittsburgh in 2016 and 2017 who has been plagued by struggles in recent years, and Minnesota’s Cam Talbot, who is potentially the odd man out with the Wild, who re-signed Marc-André Fleury to a two-year deal worth $7 million this week. There have been suggestions that John Gibson could be available in Anaheim. But the three-time all-star surely wouldn’t be pried away cheaply.

Dubas, for his part, has put a calm face on a chaotic game of goalie-themed musical chairs in which the team that hesitates may be left without a seat.

“We like the options we have available to us, both our internal options and the trade options,” he said.

Internally the Leafs have Erik Källgren, the Swedish backup who played in 14 games for Toronto last season, putting up an underwhelming .888 save percentage. They have Joseph Woll, who was solid enough in four appearances with the Leafs last season but battled injuries that limited his availability. They also have Dryden McKay, the reigning Hobey Baker Trophy winner as the top player in NCAA Division I, signed to a two-year AHL deal in the spring. Perhaps Toronto’s brain trust believes in the fever dream of a rookie goaltender named after Ken Dryden, the former Leafs president and Montreal Canadiens legend, delivering these Leafs beyond the first round for the first time in a generation.

Toronto also has exclusive negotiating rights with Campbell until Wednesday, and it surely behooves them to get a deal done rather than risk the unpredictability of a supply-and-demand curve that doesn’t appear to favour desperate buyers. Or maybe Dubas sufficiently roamed the draft floor during Friday’s cellphone outage to set the stage for a day-saving trade.

Given the nature of the position, and especially given its dim recent history in Toronto, there are few sure things. It’s a safe enough bet that, when the season opens Oct. 12, the Leafs will employ a goalie tandem. It’s an open question whether or not, nearly 10 years after Burke left the building, they’ll have a goalie problem.

Another though is amassed Anaheim might want to get into the bedard sweepstakes

Maybe but the flip of that is we can straight up afford Gibson now

I was playing with capfriendlys mock GM simulator. There is a scenario where we can sign Campbell to 5 mil per, sign Giroux to 5 mil per, sign Tkachuk to 10.5 mil per (we have the pick compensation), sign engvall and Sandin to 2 mil per, trade for Chychrun and it will all fit under the cap. We'd have to trade tavares and Muzzin to make it happen. Of course the scenario is an EA Sports fantasy sports thing but it shows the team even with $30ish mil tied up in Marner,AM and Nylander , this team could make major changes and still be a really competitive team.

You’re not a logical person then if that’s what you think

Ummm what and no that’s not possible!!
Chychrun: 4.5M
Tkachuk : 10M
Giroux: 5M
Campbell: 5M
Engvall/sandin/backup goalie: 5M
TOTAL IN = 30M

Muzzin : 5M
Tavares: 11M
TOTAL OUT = 16M

That’s like not even close to possible. Like note even close to close. Even if you were the waive Matthews, you’d still be missing 3M.

Ya of the are willing partners really the shy is the limit but realistically atm we have the space for Gibson

I may not drink the koolaid served up from the Leafs pravda-sphere but I really hope Dubas can find a high end goaltending solution. Campbell is better than many of the alternatives, several of which are now gone, but I'll say it again: this particular team has needed a dominant goalie over the past 6 playoffs to advance. Campbell's good, not great nor dominant, not even sure he should play 50 games a season. I hope Dubas is considering doing whatever it takes to get that goalie even at the expense of one of the better prospects/young players (Robertson, Sandin).

A flawed Campbell is looking more and more your best bet, but the Oilers are equally as desperate….
What if Campbell "Al Leiter's" the Leafs? There are reports that the initial offer was a bit of a lowball offer.

Al Leiter was this great lefthanded arm the Blue Jays had acquired from the Yankees. They patiently went through 6 seasons of blister problems on his pitching hand until he finally got it together in 1995. The Blue Jays offered Leiter a big contract, perhaps the best offer, and were flabbergasted when the player they had done everything for, nurtured, supported, given opportunity just left the organization for the expansion franchise in Florida.

Dubas said he likes there internal and trade options. Sounds like we will be trading for a starter and woll/kallgren backup.
Makes me lean away from thoughts of a UFA goalie and more towards Gibson type move.

I'll be disappointed if it's not Campbell Keumper or Gibson(without trading Nylander).

If they go cheap on goalies, they better have the best top 9 in the NHL where it's all said and done.
