If it's not Jack Campbell who should be the Leafs new #1 goalie?

According to TSN insider trading there have been no real negotiations between the Leafs and Campbell.

He's looking for 5+

they aren't paying it nor should they.

Spend that money on a real #1

Via trade or free agency

Brodie is good but not the skillset we need, that 5 mil needs to unlock. Muzzin is actually what we need but age and injuries needs his 5 mil freed up too. Hey Im in that better systematic play boat too, I firmly believe that a team that plays a tight defensive style will make the goalie look like a star, look at Trotz and how his goalies improve statistically once he takes over the team. The problem is not so much the Leaf defencemen, although they could learn how to take a stick away in front of the crease, as its what happens before the puck gets past the face off dot. Keefe's system when defending gives up the point, attacking defencemen can with impunity do whatever they want blueline +10 feet into our zone. It allows the other team to QB a play without being challenged. The second problem is Dubas said there will be no major changes. Same personnelle, same results. You are not going to hook up a horse harness to a cheetah and expect it to pull a cart, same concept with Nylander, Matthews, Tavares and so on, they are not going to all of a sudden become shot suppressors with the same coach/ same system. We have a team that pushes the pace at the risk of giving up easy scoring opportunities for the other team. Personnel wise and structurally we are not a team that will make its goalie look good.

agreed he's got several of 920+ goaltending he's got his team 2 wins away from a cup his numbers aren't fantastic but he's won more series than Jack has ever won.

That's what this team needs, they need a closer, a guy that can win that 4th game.

and one advantage he does have over Gibson, is all he costs is money no picks, no prospects nothing

there aren’t any definitive upgrades over Campbell.

They could maybe take a gamble on a young guy like Blackwood, but that’s risky business.

Upgrading on a part-time tandem goalie like Campbell really isn't that difficult a problem as there are many options better as the stats will show,

However when you have so limited cap space your options are also limited.

That goalie that is one win away from the Cup makes $4.5 mil and is a pending UFA, which is more then either of Leafs so called starting goalies make and much more than the $1.65 mil Campbell makes.

Leafs would have to move on from both their current goalies to free up enough cap space to sign a player like Kuemper and bring in his top 5 sv% 0.921 and regular season wins with 37 in 57 starts.

This goalie decision is going to be the most importent decision of the Dubas era, he gets this even slightly wrong and we are so screwed. Mrazek is a boat anchor too.

Keumper has had a save % of over .920 3 times in the last 4 years. 2/3 times he was playing for the yotes. Pretty obvious he's a legit number 1

The avs paid a boat load for him and have a 2 million dollar back up despite having an upper tier defense. So yeah maybe we should invest in the position

Shouldn't you be clamoring for a big time goalie.

The expected goal clan loves to brag about how our D is so good and how insane we'd be if only we had a good keeper.

Shouldn't you want to get one?

Kuemper has some major risks attached. He will likely get an inflated contract, he has been inconsistent at times, and he is 32. I think you are paying for what he has done.

I have my limits with Campbell too, but I think there is a better chance he comes in at a reasonable contract than Kuemper, and Campbell has had a similar career and contract trajectory as Kuemper thus far. Kuemper, for the record, received a 4.5 x 2 contract from Arizona coming off of his first full season as a starter where he put up a .925 in 55 games backstopping Arizona of all teams. He was coming off of a 1.85 x 2 contract before that, and was brought in to be a solution after being a backup in LA.

Sound familiar?

I don't blame Campbell for asking for the moon, or exploring his options in UFA. There may be teams willing to give him that. But I think the Leafs cap him out as the 4x3 or 4.5x2 goalie he is - just in line with Andersen and Kuemper - and they will explore Husso and the trade market for a better option too. Campbell at that price is a solid Plan C or D and likely better than Kuemper at the contract he is getting.
 
If I were the Leafs I would pick a "negotiation day" and give him 8 hours that day to sign or not, otherwise move on. Sh*t or get off the pot!

yeah he hasn't had a great playoffs but he's had several years of 920+ goaltending, and you he's winning series.

Winning series is what's important

Kuemper is doing that

Campbell has proven he can't
