If it's not Jack Campbell who should be the Leafs new #1 goalie?

I would have Campbell and Kuemper as the top 2 free agent goalies. I think they both get deals north of $5 million per year and I don't know if the Leafs plan on paying that much.

Fleury is an interesting suggestion. He's been up and down a lot in his career. A bit of a headcase at times, like Campbell, where he doubts himself. And maybe the scariest part is he's been super athletic his entire career and he's now 37 years old.

Interesting. I suspect Campbell will be looking for more term than that. Likely closer to 4-6 years than 3.
Im not sure any team will give him that term. Feels like a lot of teams are willing to pay, but only in that 2-3 year range

You do realize there is less than 2 years between the 2 right?

Age is not a factor
Two years could be huge for a guy on the wrong side of 30. Kuemper. He would not be my first choice.

Eh, I don't put it passed at least one or two GMs to do something dumb in free agency.
An extra year or two might be what gets soup to sign. Don't have to yell you how we got Marleau to sign here.

I would target Campbell and pray he gives us a discount like Rielly did. Doesn't look like the Dubas plan though.

I could see him doing so

But if the 2.75 and no communication stuff is true it seems like the relationship is probably at a point where that's not going to happen

True. If that happened, it's insulting. That's not a discount, that's a mega-discount.

Yeah you can at least tell him you need to off load cap

But you don't offer him less then his backup lol

It's like us offering bunting like 1.2 mil as an extension

The goalie search

This is a really hard one to handicap. Adding a goalie — and likely two — is the No. 1 priority for Toronto, but this is a tough year to have that be the case. There just aren’t many sure things available.

But if I had to make an educated bet, I would have Ville Husso high on the Leafs’ goaltender target list.

The tough thing with landing on one name here, however, is Toronto probably isn’t going to be the highest bidder for the top tenders. It appears all but certain they’ll be priced out on Jack Campbell, who is set to earn significant money for the first time in his career. But he might not be the only goalie they can’t meet the asking price on.

The Devils, in particular, have made it known they’ll be aggressive in seeking an upgrade in goal, and there is a lot of talk Campbell is a primary target there. But with other teams like Edmonton, Washington and Colorado potentially needing to add a No. 1, New Jersey could miss on its first option and have to refocus elsewhere.

That’s where someone like Husso could suddenly get a large offer despite having played just 57 regular season games in the NHL.

Some GMs are going to take big gambles in this desert of a goalie market. Some are going to miss big, too.

If the Leafs strike out there — and Darcy Kuemper stays with the Avs — what then? The trade market is looking rather emaciated, especially given Elliotte Friedman says Semyon Varlamov is probably staying on Long Island.

Maybe Dubas can pull something out of his hat here, but I don’t see marquee veterans like John Gibson and Jonathan Quick making sense.

One dark horse option who should probably be getting more talk, however, is Marc-André Fleury. He’s going to land with a contender, and there are only so many of those with a need in net.

As for trying to dump Petr Mrazek: It now sounds like he was closer to becoming a Blackhawk at the trade deadline than has been previously revealed. You have to imagine the Leafs are trying to revisit those talks — although the key is going to be what exactly they have to give up to get out from that deal.

Is that sweetener an easier price to swallow than the buyout penalty, which equates to $4.7 million in lost cap space over the next four seasons? We’ll see.

Jack needs to cash in. So does Mikheyev. Don't hold it against either one when they don't give the Leafs a discount. This is their life's work. It's now or never for both of them.
Here here .. Jack wants a shot at a #1 gig long term with associated $$$ and this is his only shot at it .. Mik wants a shot at a top 6 role with associated $$$ too .. neither will fit into Leafs CAP situation .. much like Zach last year .. you spend your entire life to get to this spot and you must cash in

In a perfect world we get rid of Mrazek (god i hated that signing, and look where we are now. Absolutely brutal move) re-sign Campbell and I'd LOVE to get Blackwood as the backup over here, I think that kid has so much god damn upside, I really think he will put it together one day and be dominant.

If you look at the market we better hope to god we can get Campbell for 5 or under, because it looks like we will be priced out of anyone else other than a 37 year old Fleury.
