If it's not Jack Campbell who should be the Leafs new #1 goalie?

For a supposed cup contender, our goalie situation is pretty frightening at the moment. If we have to nickel and dime to find a tender, we’re just gambling and that’s potentially quite scary.
I really can't believe that we are still focusing on the goal position too.

I recall a horrible moment when Sparks was promoted as the back-up and McElhinney/Pickard were put on waivers. Clearly McElhinney was the better goaltender and he saved TOR's bacon helping them earn a playoff birth.

Last year was laughable too when it came to trying to fill in for our injured goalies. Other GMs were plucking our players off waivers for fun.

At this point Toronto has a struggling / often injured goalie in Mrazek, Källgren, and Woll.

It doesn't have to be like this, but Kyle/Shanny have never shifted/adjusted the cap allocation.

Was Burke ever this stubborn as a GM?

It’s really incredible, we better get this right, everything counts on this off season.

So long ago I don’t really recall but I trust you’re recalling it correctly. I do remember he was excellent during his stay.
Would you consider Fluery to be less of a risk?
Id say hes far less risky than Belfour, but i wouldnt expect the heroic turnaround we saw with Eddie.

Id expect MAF to be a middle of the toad NHL starter here. A more reliable version of Campbell

Fun fact: The season we allocated the most cap to goaltending with this core came under Dubas.
Fred at $5M + Jack at $1.65M is equal to $6.65M....where did it we get there with Mrazek and Jack at $3.8M and 1.65M? Are you counting Woll and Kallgren? If so...you need to count last year when Fred and Jack were hurt. Funny, these facts can be....

I don't know about MAF...it seems he was great in his first cup winning playoffs but since then has consistently been pulled at some point in the playoffs(Murray did the heavy lifting in the 2 cup wins recently). He played ok for Vegas 1 yr and then Lehner had to take over at some point. I think he is going off of rep and flash more than substance.

Sign me up then.

I think we'll spend a similar amount that we usually spend, in the ~6m range. Cup finalist Colorado allocated 5.5m to goaltending this season, for the record.

Which is the most we've spent on goaltending in the Matthews/Marner era.
Its almost like the Avs paid a huge price for salary retention on a soon to be UFA goalie last summer. Goalies of Kuemper's quality won't be available for 3.5 million this summer barring a big trade and likely retention like Colorado did.

It‘s possible that Campbell has agreed to a contract but they are waiting to make other moves to keep them under the summer cap before signing it.

If not, it could be a disaster, especially if they are planning to promote 4+ Marlies to begin the season.

The Avs also have the best defensive in hockey and still paid that price to get a goalie

Should probably tell us something

Kuemper was only 1m retained.
I'm aware, 1 million retained makes saying Colorado had 5.5 million dedicated to goalies misleading but I'm sure you know that

Yup, personally not down for this cheap 1a/1b plan where each goalie makes like 1-3 million. Doesnt seem like a recipe for success

Their backup also makes 2 mil a year... So they obviously are dedicated to the position

If we can move Mrazek. I don't see why we can't spend 5 or so on a goalie.

We spent about the same last year and played Kallgren/woll a lot anyways why not get a reliable number 1 as long as we're not over playing him like we did with Freddy

Dubas is going to tell himself the same story 1000 times and then he will believe that with tighter systems we can improve our GA. I'm thinking next year might just be a regression year. ;)

The solution would be to possess the puck most of the time and in the opposition's zone. Unfortunately most of our forwards are afraid to go into corners and up against bigger, stronger dmen. That has to change and it was great to see Matty adding some physicality to his game. The rest of our forwards, except Bunting good luck..

This is true though. Only thing I agreed with Keefe later end of season is when he complained the D doesn't clear the crease or box guys out. 10 mil in Brodie and Muzzin is now wastage. Brodie is good but not the skillset we need, that 5 mil needs to unlock. Muzzin is actually what we need but age and injuries needs his 5 mil freed up too. Leafs have a lot of cap space to work with it's just tied up in things we don't need, and people want to remove what we do need instead.

Fleury makes some sense as a guy who might come a bit cheaper, short-term deal, fill the veteran presence/Cup winner/name brand acquisition role. If he's willing to come cheap enough, they might even be able to keep Mrazek as a reclamation project or jettison him for another decent backup. Bringing in Fleury reminds me of the Belfour signing many years ago.
I don't like many of the options out there currently, but I am somewhat intrigued by Fleury. Obviously not a long-term solution, but might be a fit for a season or two.

He's somewhat of a risk though

He'll have his implosion games. Kinda been this way since junior

I think hes fine if expectations are a capable starter. Hes not a guy to carry the team on his back though.

I wouldn't count on Fleury coming here. Seems pretty likely he goes back to Pittsburgh and finishes his career there.
