check out white labs kitchen and tap in asheville if you are at all interested in beer, brewing, biotech, etc

they are one of the larger suppliers of brewer's yeast and they do lab tours where they show you how it is made. they also will typically have multiple beers on tap with the same recipe using different yeasts so you can compare the taste difference.

they also use their yeast in their food. the hot chicken sandwich is one of the best things i have ever put in my mouth.

Also one of the former assistant brewers at Gizmo is now working for White Labs.

Question:

Anybody else ever see these poor schlubs who stand outside the Renaissance Hotel in North Hills with reams of folders and wait patiently for a visiting hockey player to wander outside to sign their cards? I live across the street so I see these guys constantly and they are out their all day, in the cold, rain, etc.

I've always wondered what the ROI was on doing that. I can't imagine that stuff sells for anywhere near enough to justify standing out in the rain all day for a hit or miss chance. Or are these guys like felons who can't get a normal job?

Agree. His abstract style is not my cup of tea, but his paintings are so colorful and interesting to look at. We stop in every time.

Have you had the occasion to meet and chat w/Jonas? He is the nicest dude.

My wife and I bought one of his more impressionistic/expressionistic paintings (she's the art history major so she'd have to tell you the difference) from his earlier days as a personal anniversary gift.

Like most on here, I love Asheville and try to get up there a couple of times a year.

So I have an interview this week at a company in Burlington, NC. I’m not too familiar with areas west of Eastern NC and I don’t want to put the cart before the horse but for those of you more in the know, is commuting to Burlington from the Raleigh/Durham area doable? During the intitial phone interview it was mentioned that as a single guy Greensboro would be better than Burlington and that Chapel Hill isn’t too far either. I’m okay with commuting up to an hour away as I’ve done it before with a different job and school.

I know a few folks that commute from Durham to Burlington for work. You’d be going the opposite direction of the majority of traffic, so it’s not too bad. Makes a difference if you are on the East or West side of Burlington.

Yep, met him a few times. He was doing a live painting and we were the only ones there. He was listening to circ du solei and my wife didn’t notice the “do not talk during live painting” sign and started talking. Jonas turned around, stopped painting and came right over to us. Spent the next half hour showing us around the gallery and telling us about each painting. Funny enough, we purchased one of his less abstract paintings for our anniversary as well and he gave us another small one as a gift. We’ve been back a couple times and talked to him again.

We always stop in when we are there.

What a great story! And.....the exact same thing happened to my wife and me.....not the talking during the painting thing, but the gallery tour, bought one of his less abstract pieces, and he gave us another smaller piece. I'm going to have to get up there again soon....
