The local constabulary is pretty willing to let things slide as long as things aren't getting heated, but sometimes globals or admins drop in and have different opinions.

And the no discussion of moderation rule is just broadly ridiculous. If anything, discussing moderation lets people better understand where the lines are, which, if you want people to actually behave, is only a positive. But it is a rule, so tut tut, let's drop that line of discussion.

Yea I think HFCanes for the most part is pretty chill. It's over on the HFMain that it's just like NHL officiating, fans of some franchises are allowed to get away with murder while those from "lesser" franchises can't even criticize without it being considered "flaming"

The last ban wave, I assume, was due to their “No politics“ rule. Which, to be fair, I can see the reasoning behind. It’s a very violate topic, especially lately, and while I agree that no one said anything out of line, it seems like one of those rules that they have to enforce harshly because if they allow the topic to be discussed, it almost always eventually ends up in a very heated circular discussion.

That being said, as more and more aspects of everyday life apparently become “political issues”, the banning of such discussions would eventually lead to the absence of all off-topic discussion. The Chik-Fil-A post is a prime example of that. When I first posted it, politics was the last thing on my mind. I just thought it was a very weird idea that had almost no chance of success and wanted to see if others had a reasonable explanation. The initial answer was pushing far-right propaganda, which it could very well be, given Chik-Fil-A’s previous history, but Dave also provided the answer of tax manipulation, which also makes sense. And has nothing to do with politics.

Of course, when most people think of the term "politics", they're thinking mostly of electoral politics, parties and elections. That's pretty clearly out of bounds here, and I'm fine with that, and I think everyone gets that. But when you're discussing social issues without regard to the electoral and partisan battles of it, I tend to think that's appropriate for an off topic thread as long as things aren't getting too heated. At that point it becomes more about the flaming and trolling side than the fact that it's political per se, though there are some topics (abortion, Israel-Palestine) where I've generally just nuked posts as soon as I see them. Ultimately, all of this is a judgement call.

The Concert for Carolina had an attendance of 82,193. A 6 hour event that raised: $24,513,185.00 Everything sold goes to relief efforts - tickets, merch, food, booze and tips.

Luke Combs and Eric Church put on a wonderful event with an array of performers. A fun yet touching occasion and people were genuinely so nice. Hadn't been to a show that ended at 1:00 am in quite some time. Hope it helps to ease the pain a little for some.

I visited Antietam National Battlefield for the first time this weekend. I’ve been meaning to do it for years and finally made the time. It was a really incredible experience. The battlefield is extremely well preserved. All of the monuments and trails are well marked and maintained. I got a bit choked up walking through the west woods trail. For me it was an easy hike on a beautiful autumn day. For several thousand boys and men it became hell on earth. I spoke to a woman at the bloody lane whose ancestor was a union soldier who attacked that position.

He was 15. f***ing 15. It’s unimaginable.


I can’t recommend it highly enough; for anybody. Even if you don’t have any interest in American history. It’s an extremely sobering place.

Fun story, I actually teach some 3rd year med students in English program. 2 girls from Iran, 3 girls and 1 guy from Israel.
