If by "a long time" you mean "until the economy craters and the lights go out" then okay. Because it's going to be bye-bye Babylon when people are paying for bread with virtual wheelbarrows filled with Cryptocurrency. 😉
You must be a blast at parties.

Ah yes the coin of the realm, eh?

But at the parties I wind up at- I'm usually the least negative guy. "No...you don't have to believe all the conspiracy theories! At least some of them are red-herrings. Right?? Right??"

Yet I'm sure you eagerly await the next episode of "The Last of Us" and the release of "Station 11"?

I’m just tired of gambling being the focus of sports broadcasts. Like for ****s sake, every single thing doesn’t have to relate to gambling.

Agreed. I'm fine with it being legal but let's not encourage it.
Fantasy leagues, suicide pools, Super Bowl "numbers", etc... have become so popular and prevalent in main stream that it will continue to be the focus and the leagues love it. Casual fans become invested because of gambling. My one kid didn't give a shit about the NFL, until he joined a fantasy football league with his buddies. Suddenly, he's following players, watching games, reading up on teams/players, etc... He's now in fantasy leagues in other sports as well.

These sports leagues know that not only is it big business, it's a way to get, and keep fans invested in their product.

In essence, they are pushers.

If you wanna legalize sports gambling, fine. I think it's an extremely predatory industry, but I have my own vices, and I'm generally a beleiver that people can't always be protected from themselves and generally shouldn't be if the risks are well known. But if you legalize sports gambling you need to f***ing put Pete Rose in Cooperstown already. The leagues are really speaking out of both sides of their mouth on this stuff and it's really off putting.

I'm totally OK with having those things involved. I have a small Vegas bet on the Canes to win the Cup this year, and I play fantasy. No issue with working those things into the presentation. Especially fantasy sports, which is indeed a great vehicle for getting people involved in the league as a whole, week to week.

It's just gone way over the top in a very short time. At this point the TSN broadcasts are basically just one gambling topic after another, pushing prop bets and 'odds of winning at this exact minute' talking points. Then they cut to commercial and it's 3 gambling ads back to back, and they cut back to the game by leading with a teaser about another prop bet. It's beginning to blur the lines as to what the actual "product" is, hockey or gambling.

There was a gambling ad on NHL Radio the other day and at the end they had to go state-by-state for gambling addiction help resources; it was ridiculous, took up about 80% of the airtime.

I think the tipping point here was when Bally took over the main RSN across the US. That supercharged sports betting to be the main focus of the events, rather than something you can enjoy alongside of it. And of course it was going to be that way, a major casino in charge of sports broadcasts, it was never going to differ from that.

I don't care about sports betting if its just a little bit here or there as like a side course, but the way some of these networks act, they're absolutely targeting and preying on the addicts, and that's just not ok. If you're going to limit alcohol and tobacco advertising, you need to start limiting sports betting promotions as well.

But those are essentially gambling, which is my point. The league(s) have been growing and pushing this for years which not only gets fans involved in the sport, but gets them involved in gambling.

That's where I'll disagree with you. I think it's been steadily growing over time and state legislatures have taken notice, which has led to them and pushing to legalize it within their states and "normalize" it to take advantage of a revenue stream. For dozens of years on sports radio, I remember hearing the ads for the guys selling their service where you could call and get their "guaranteed winner" on various college or pro games. Radio guys talking about "point spreads", "over/unders", etc... has been going on for ages.

I agree. My only point of disagreement is that this has been growing steadily over time to get to the point where it is today. The more mainstream and big business it has become, the more focus it gets on broadcasts, but it's been growing steadily for years. My father, who never gambled, used to complain about it for years.

I know, right. I want my beer and truck ads back. Well, at least I think that is what they were selling as I couldn't really tell because of all the boobs on the screen. Anyway, I want those back. Or gambling adds with boobs. Either way.

I remember those ads, and the rise of fantasy, etc. I know it's been there for a long time.

But since 2018 it has risen very very quickly. This industry article cites a 22% increase from 2021 to 2022 alone. In Q1 and Q2 (playoff season in 3 of the big 4 sports) it was more like a 50% increase year-over-year.

The article also predicts that the next phase will be to shift away from these all-encompassing media campaigns and focus more on their digital presence among established gamblers, so maybe there's some relief ahead for those of us who just want to watch a hockey game for its own sake.

I really enjoyed Station 11. Post apocalyptic type show. Set about 20 years after a flu pandemic.
I didn’t realize Station Eleven had a series; I’ve got the book. Where can you stream it?

I knew things were going in a questionable direction when, prior to Sinclair renaming all the channels after the Bally's brand, they mentioned a plan to incorporate gambling buttons into the remote control of your TV.

I mean think about the implications of that for gambling addicts, building gambling functionality physically into the remote control. Or for a kid who otherwise would have no contact with sports gambling. If they want to watch television, they have to physically hold a gambling device. Crazy stuff.

Bud Lite introduces the remote Beer Vendor. During the seventh inning stretch your remote control will dispense a 16oz warm beer, some of it on your wrist, for only $35.
