Rumor: Hurricanes could look to flip Rantanen if he doesn’t extend by the deadline

What could the cat's reasonably offer that wouldn't get immediately outbid? They're short on picks and have one of the worst prospect pools in the league, not to mention that I think it's doubtful Carolina would be excited to trade in division.

This feels like the perfect move for LA, especially if they're thinking about moving on from Clarke

You’re not listening. They asked Aho if he was surprised the trade happened and he said no and that he specifically asked Rants if a trade was possible a few days earlier and Rants told him that he and his agent had just left a meeting with the Avs where it was obvious he could get traded. He told Aho he could definitely be traded like two days before it happened.

Rants was 0% “blindsided” by the trade aside from the destination.

Common sense also suggests that he and his agent in advance had honest talks about how requesting 13-14 million from a team with two huge contact players in front of him was probably getting him traded.

The Canes historically replace pieces that leave in free agency with other free agents at the same position. Hamilton, for example, was swapped with DeAngelo. Skjei and Pesce was swapped for Gostisbehere and Walker. Trocheck was swapped, on net, for Kotkaniemi. Considering that they will have almost $50 million in cap space if Rantanen chooses to sign elsewhere, they will have no problem replacing Rantanen in the offseason if they have to.

Lundell and Ekblad could get it done, potentially. Panthers would have to have a deadline deal in place for a RHD to make that work, though.
 
He's going to sign back with the Avs in the off season for 10million a year. Maybe 9million of Mac has a "talk" with him.

I hope he goes to LA. I'm an Avs fan who lives in Southern California. Wife is a huge Kings fan so we go to a bunch of Kings games.
 
If not the leafs, hoping he goes to the Kings too.

The kings missing piece is an offensive gamebreaker like Rantanen. Might be the piece that gets them past the Oilers

Rants level of a player is exactly what they need but they’ll settle with being close to the Cup but not just good enough

Think Carolina has not been the same under Tulsky, than it was under Francis. Think they are blowing their roster away thanks to these moves.

At last season, they lost Guentzel same way as now Rantanen could happen. They lost 4 players + 2 picks for Guentzel, and we he didn't re-sign, got only 3rd rounder back.

Now they lost Necas + Drury + 2 picks for Rantanen, and now has to trade Rantanen away, probably for much lesser price. This is exactly how you kill the franchise. Losing the talent, not extending them.

Aho will be next who will bolt away when he sees this enough (already has been offer-sheeted by Montreal, which his childhood favourite team), Aho will go next and then, what they have to build around?

Svechnikov has been a injury-bust since his big deal, hopefully does not turn out as bad as his elder brother, but they have same genetics... Jarvis and Slavin will be pretty alone in few years.

You’re right, it will be very scary for the franchise when a 35 year old Sebastian Aho walks as a UFA in the summer of Two Thousand and Thirty Three.

If you wanted to bag on the Canes this is a fair way to do it except for arguably your biggest point. Aho has many years left on his contract. He isn’t going anywhere. Takes the validity out of your whole argument despite the fair points.

There is so much wrong with this post, I don't know where to start. Let's go in order. Bullet points.
  • Ron Francis hasn't been the Carolina GM since May 2018.
  • Necas and Drury had both made it clear they were not staying past their current contracts. They lost one year of team control on Necas.
  • Trading for Rantanen was likely the best trade return the Canes were getting for Necas. Part of that was the baked-in risk assumed that he might go UFA.
  • Aho is signed through 2031-32.
  • The Canes have one of the best-run scouting departments in the NHL and as a result, one of the better and deepest prospect pools in the NHL despite not having a top-10 pick since Andrei Svechnikov in 2018.
I think we'll be fine.

The best return we could’ve gotten for Necas would be one that stayed longer than the end of the season. You can argue if we win the cup then all moves are justified - and they would be but it’s unlikely we win the cup.

When did Drury say he was leaving?

I think that was a reference to Drury’s trade request a few seasons ago. I don’t think he had any demands to leave after they started to give him regular playing time. He still would have been an RFA at the expiration of his current contract.

Sucks to have given him up potentially for nothing on top of Necas as well.
