How could this possibly work with Avs little to no cap space and the fact that Necas needs a big contract in a year, Blackwood extension kicks in as well, and Makar is gonna get like $15m in two years time?
That's on them to figure it out. But with the cap jumping about 8 Million a year for the next 3 season, moving a guy like Samuel Girard and throwing some differed money in there, it's definitely doable.

Sure... anything is possible but my point is that the Avs and Rantanen are likely further apart than they've ever been in the ability to reach a deal that works for both sides.

Where do they rank since the trade though?
Terrible I'm sure but that's not the point. Canes have been a top 10 offensive team all season. People shouldn't be coming with lazy and incorrect takes of 'Canes can't score so that's why Mikko wants to leave' when the Canes clearly can score.

Here is their rank over the last 5 seasons.

2025 - 9th
2024 - 7th
2023 - 15th
2022 - 9th
2021 - 10th

Now it might not be ultra elite and Colorado has typically scored more but it still averages out to a top 10 placement each season over the last 5. That's not a team that 'CAN'T SCORE GOALS'.

Now if were are talking currently... yes Canes can't score or really do much of anything well.

You are free to want to add rantanen as a leafs fan - I’m just not sure that really addresses the issues on the team that have been holding it back in the playoffs.
Even though they have good offensive players, scoring was the issue in the playoffs last year. They were in many low scoring games and this season the PP hasn't been good. Rantanen at a lower price would be a great addition and let's see what happens in the offseason with Rantanen and Marner. Might be a good back up plan if Mitch didn't return...

I agree with you.

My point was just that I'd rather see Rantanen in Colorado than anywhere else. There are some duos that should not be broken.

If Colorado gets Necas, Drury and a couple picks for free in the process, I won't be mad about it.

I think it should be noted that I might be biased, I'm a Habs fan but I love Colorado too.

Sure I mean I wouldn’t rule anything out but in order for Colorado to sign him, Rantanen is going to have to make some major concessions on his contract asks and/or Colorado is going to have to figure out a way to clear a tremendous amount of cap space.

Of course it’s possible but it doesn’t seem like a very likely option at the moment

Idk if we even have the right pieces to make it work….

I’d imagine
Mctavish
Gibson
1 of Mintyukov/zellweger/luneau

And even that idk get it’s it done…. Not really much room to improve outside of swapping carlsson in for mctavish(but I imagine that’s a no from us)

From an Anaheim perspective and I’m probably in the minority but Rantanen with an extension or at the very least the belief to get one done - I would offer

McTavish
Mintyukov
Prospect
1st (top 8 or so protected)

Ya - these ANA offers would definitely be of interest if Carolina and Rantanen aren't seeing eye to eye before the deadline.

What we would have to offer, will hurt…. Mctavish is prob a solid starting point.
1 of the young dmen (zell, minty, luneau), a good 2nd piece… then I could see debate on Gibson(we take back a goalie) or our 1st…. And then maybe a B piece or 2

Well, I would say that having an "over enthusiastic" owner to put it nicely, is not something that agents, other GMs, or maybe even the team's own GM and coach appreciate all that much when usually the chain of command is somewhat clear with how these things are run.

It's not just about the agents thinking Dundon is cheap and they can't get their clients paid. Having an owner, a member of the board or someone like that meddling in the day-to-day operations of a business rarely leads to anything good. And I'm not talking just about sports here, can talk about my own experience in my own company as well.

Again though, the survey has to be taken in context that it’s specifically the opinion of agents.

It’s like surveying used car salesmen to discover that the absolute worst person who is WAY too involved in your decision making is that bitch wife of yours. Come on, man. Just sign the paper.

And specifically, they prefer to work with GMs who make a display of haggling, but are internally freaking out because they need to get a deal done or their role in the organization comes into question.

They really don’t like dealing with GMs who will 100% walk away from the table rather than sign a bad deal, and whose ownership is telling them to ignore all other voices other than their accountability for not signing bad deals.

This leads to agents having a much harder time working with those GMs, to their clients getting sent back into the market where they find willing suckers in other organizations. And to agents saying things like “yeah, those guys have a weird culture, what a miserable bunch of bastards” about the office that didn’t get taken to the cleaners.

Yeah, sure. That's why teams like Minnesota and Tampa Bay (followed by Dallas, Florida and Colorado) are on top of the poll about best front offices to deal with. Because they always overpay the players, and agents get the most money.

Or, you could actually just take the anonymous quotes as they are. With Carolina, the complaints were specifically about Dundon trying to get involved. Nobody had a bad word to say about Tulsky, it's just that when you think you are negotiating with Tulsky, all of a sudden Dundon comes in calling. With other front offices in that poll, the agents had specific gripes with the general managers (or assistant GM with the Ducks). With Carolina, it's the owner.

You just named teams which signed two of the top five largest contracts in the league today, three of which have no income tax. I’d be pretty comfortable walking into those offices too if I were an agent.

Minnesota as the fifth entry is no surprise. Guerin’s an insider’s-insider and the Wild are well known for being a top notch operation, not just among agents but also among execs and players.

Dundon isn’t in the industry to make friends. He’s not trying to be GM for Team USA, and he doesn’t give a shit what the agents think. That’s what they’re complaining about when they say he’s “not afraid” to tell them his opinions. Why should he be afraid? He became a billionaire by winning in negotiations, and he is more equipped to be in the room for contract negotiations than the majority of NHL GMs. Of course he doesn’t respect the agents when they do their song and dance, and of course they hate him for it.

this whole situation is insane

quite frankly, i don't see how making rantanen play upside down is going to help him produce more after the deadline, but i'm no expert. we've all seen the thigh grilling picture, so maybe they think he will shoot harder if he holds the stick with his feet idk
