The ESPN broadcast effort is an abomination. I would love to just let it go, but I see that the Eastern Conference Finals are on ESPN and the West gets TNT. Bummer. So, forgive me as I preach toward our choir...
ESPN, how much do I despise thee? Let me count the ways. Where to start? How about with Messier. Love him as a player and a captain. Public speaking is not his forte. Mess is continually stammering when attempting to enunciate from out of his wheelhouse. (The word you are looking for is "exuberant", Mr. Messier). He's still better than Chelios. Smile dude, you're on TV. That sad pair of deer-in-the-headlights personalities are led by the smarmy (just a tad less creepy than Barry Melrose) Steve Levy, making for less than compelling analysis. And that's the best part of the broadcast.
Sean McDonough is tediously boring as he drones on in monotone fashion while Ferraro audibly winces when stretching to make a favorable comment about the Rangers. Last night Ray was less negative toward the Blueshirts, as they took control early and forced Ferraro's hand. But the voice quality... Ray gets excited and sounds like a mouse in a glue trap. Get somebody with pipes in that chair. Meanwhile Trouba lands the best hit of the playoffs and poor Seth Jarvis is dragging himself to the bench like Billy Ray Valentine begging in the park. Do the crack announcers even notice? Sometime after the PP goal, I think.
Then there's the camera work. It's like being drunk on a rollercoaster as we watch the director shift back and forth to the behind-the-net cam. So bad. "I know, let's put a camera near the worst seats in the house and jiggle it." Nice call, ESPN.
Sorry for the rant. I should be happy today, and I am. But the ESPN coverage is a disgrace. That's what you get for going away for almost twenty years and letting the talent thrive elsewhere. ESPN is good at a number of things. Hockey is not one of them.
