How would you rate out drafting the past few years??

2015: A, two NHL players which is about what you hope for, one of them a superstar.

2016: A, Matthews, but can skew higher if Woll becomes an NHL goalie. Grundstrom and Brooks also, but could have been much better, Carter Hart was right there.

2017: B-, by himself Liljegren probably isn’t enough to shift an okay draft into A territory. He becomes a 2D and we’ll talk.

2018: B+, Sandin and maybe SDA make it, and I’m happier keeping Liljegren over Durzi…but he’d seal our right side for the next while.

2019: B-, the shit clocks ticking, Nick.

2020: B+, It hinges on Amirov and I hope he fully recovers, but Hirvonen and Niemela look like players.

2021: C-, three picks…

2022: TBA, give it a year but I’m not in love with the lack of picks because of failed gambits.

Marner
Matthews
Liljegren
Sandin

Dermott
Grundstrom
Brooks
Durzi

They hit when they needed to, but also traded away a lot of assets and made some baffling picks. On the strength of Matthews and Marner alone it’s been successful, I’ll call it a B+

I think we interviewed also Rantanen and liked him a lot. Wouldn't have been bad to have Rantanen playing with Matthews. They would compliment each other perfectly. Both can cycle, pass and has deadly shot. Matthews generational shooter with player that can also finish and is huge in same line. We might have drafted Aho, which would might have resulted pretty nice situation, but this is easy to speculate.
That draft class was rediculous with talent

It's not entirely true Matthews was a given pick.

Without Lou trading Phaneuf and Dubas trading Kessel, Matthews wouldn't be a Leaf today.

I don't trust any of hunter/dubas/lou on their own, but I would welcome all 3 back as a committee bouncing ideas off each other. They will converge in the middle somewhere.

The real question is how are doing against other teams in the East?

Tampa:

2015: Cirelli and Joseph.
2016: Howden, Katchouk, Hajek, Raddysh, meh
2017-Present: Cal and Nolan Foote and a bunch of guys I don’t know much about, some probably good.
2020-2021, 2023-2024: No 1st, but two Cups so it doesn’t matter.

Their drafting seems alright but it’s what they turn their picks into. Drouin in 2013 was a waffle at 3 (next 3: Jones, E Lindholm and Monahan), but they turned him into Sergachev.

Florida:

2015: Crouse, Montembeault and Malgin, decent, but not great considering the quality of the draft.
2016: Borgstrom and nothing else, no good.
2017: Tippett (Giroux) and Hepponiemi, not very good, thirty games or whatever of Giroux cost technically cost two firsts and a third, laugh at them.
2018: Denisenko who might be good.
2019: Spencer Knight, f*** you, but nothing else.
2020: Same but for Lundell.
2021: Samoskevich who like Denisenko might be good.
2022-2025: No 1st.

Boston:

2015: Could have had Barzal-Connor-Chabot but didn’t so they don’t matter. Stealing Pastrnak (14), McAvoy (16) and Swayman (17), what was it all for?

It gives me a little hope that Florida and Tampa started their cores earlier, Tampa getting Stamkos and Hedman in 08-09, Kucherov in 11, Vasi in 12 and Point in 14, Florida with Huberdeau in 11 and Barkov-Ekblad in 13-14.

Tampa is very smart with turning unwanted assets into wanted assets, Florida overall drafts pretty well but kind of seemed to get a little lucky.

The weird underrating of Sandin just because he got hurt last season stands out to me in here.

Hes absolutely at Liljegrens level and probably higher (while being younger) One of the best dmen his age in the league last season and hes only going to get better. I remember the olden days (a year and a half ago) when Liljegren was a bust and Sandin was the best prospect ever around here. The hot takes are pretty funny sometimes.

As far as overall drafting goes, its been hit and miss. Middle of the pack team overall with a chance to be better or worse based on how the young guns make the jump.
I wonder why he hasn’t been signed yet if he is so hot. I should say that I do like him and hope he stays but for Dubas to have him on the back burner might mean Dubas feels different then we do.
