You're missing the point. If Chara gets in, likely Kopitar is out. This way everyone relevant is included.

I would hate to see how far down an NHL roster you have to go to get 50% NHL participation from those teams.

Why wouldn't they threaten the Olympics to say they could do the same thing. So pay for the relatively minor fees for a tourny that sending our players to for free can help pay for all the money your city wasted on hosting the Olympics.

While still being nice enough to make the tourney not a true international so there is still a reason to have and go to the Olympics.

I'm not at all mad about an extra Tournament. As I said, as a college student the last World Cup I spent all my excess income to buy tickets to the games in Minnesota. I'm mad that team USA and Canada are penalized. I fail to see how you think it's only a slight penalty that the US loses some of it's best players for a team with not a lot of depth. I'm mad because I waited 12 years for the NHL to disgrace this tournament.

Passports usually matter for real world cups. Your version you are championing would not. Therefore I would question calling it a world cup.

No further down than you'd have to go for the Czechs, the Finns or "Farce Europe".

There is no North American passport. There is no European passport.

There are American and Canadian passports. For some reason when I turned 24 I didn't have to go exchange my North American passport for a big boy one.

You include team Europe so that guys like Kopitar and Chara get to participate. They are stars in the league that play for weak nations. It's nice to include them without having 40 players nobody has ever heard of our will ever hear after the tournament.

For NA23 its a great way to showcase some of the amazing young talent to a national audience.

Probably. But if you're the NHL, you want players like McDavid, Eichel, Matthews, Kopitar, etc. to have highlights on ESPN. The NHL would rather have this tournament be a success with Team NA and Team Europe than without. That much is certain.

Of course the NHL prefers that. That is why it included the gimmick teams in the tournament. I don't see why the NHL's desires should impact what any particular fan wants though.

Eh, there is little growth potential in Canada. Switch out team Canada for team Nigeria. Iginla has Nigerian roots, so that's close enough. Crosby would look good in green and white.

The NHL used this tournament as a threat against Olympic participation one year before the insurance issue emerged. I don't know why people can't comprehend this.

Have you been watching any exhibition games? The intensity is crazy and the games don't even count. The players are excited about the World Cup and the game intensity levels are proving it!

As for team Europe... None of those players playing for their country would have a shot at a gold medal. Too much competition from other countries! From what I read and saw on tv, the entire team is excited to play for team Europe because they feel it's their best chance to win a gold medal than ever before! It just sucks so far for team Europe because they had to play team North America twice! That team is stacked with future (and current) NHL stars and they all can skate! Team North America's defense is way better than I thought it would be!

It doesn't MATTER. They're still playing for their country and doing their best.

For the next Soccer World Cup, I propose scrapping about at least 20 of the 32 participating countries because they don't have a legit chance.

For the next Summer Olympics, I propose scrapping about 90% all athletes because they don't have a legit chance at gold.

I don't know that I care that much about the ice as Euros grow up learning on a different sheet anyway so they are kinda at a disadvantage.

I would like to see it be actual countries though. It is not fair that Canada and USA can't ice the best team possible.

Lombardi literally asked the NHL for an exemption so that he could pick Eichel, so we know he would be there. We can guess on Gaudreau and a few others. McDavid seems likely for Canada, and even Babcock said that he thinks some young guys would have made the team.

Eliminate team North America and team Europe, that's a joke. I won't take it seriously for that reason alone, Canada and USA each have 2 teams representing them...someone didn't think that through. Yeah we get it there's a lot of North American talent, but it should be the absolute best vs best. Gaudreau should be playing for USA not North America.

Team Europe too...what the hell is that about. Stick like 5 countries together on 1 team ? Keep it country vs country and don't over use it like the NHL has done with outdoor games (yes i realize this is not an NHL event, it's an international level event) It kills the special feeling associated with the event when it becomes so common.

Well you're missing the key point that the NHL conducts a regular season which determines who qualifies for the playoffs. Unfortunately we don't have time for such qualification with this tournament, so you have to start with the playoffs. So you're comparison is fairly far off the mark.

You really are taking a giant leap there when only two of the 8 teams are not traditional country teams. And the ones that are represent a continent with specific criteria. So it's nothing at all like you are suggesting.

We get it, you wanted Eichel on team USA. Clearly you are in the minority of people who are interested in this tourny.
