That's the thing. How long did China exist, in one form or another, before the world came knocking? What level would the CCP be willing to go, internally, to to not bend to the world? If you can threaten China, really hurt them in some way, how much comfort are you willing to give up in return? We're never going to get the circumstances that led to the post-WW2 economic boom again. Maybe we could find a similar outcome(although doubtful), but the equation to get there would be different.

If it's time to reset the entire chessboard, at this point that might be be a potential solution. It's not coming without a downside though. China even has veto power at the UN. You can't take out a country from the game, and a major piece like China at that, and just go on about your merry way. What governing body even has the ability to force a major country to observe X, Y, or Z?

I mean... the outbreak originated in China, how saying so is considered "racist" is beyond me.

This x1000, noting that there's big difference between merely noting that China is the country-of-origin for the virus vs. actually engaging in otherwise-unwarranted physical animus towards Chinese people.

Fortunately, I'm not aware of any current instances of the later. As for the former (note the first sentence in the main article, and the date):

What is coronavirus? COVID-19 explained - CNN

I think the entire world needs to rethink their relationship with the Chinese. They refuse to take responsibility for this pandemic, and despite being incorporated into the World Trade Organization in December 2001, they continue to fail to observe basic hygiene requirements one would expect from a trading partner. The Chinese have a history of starting virus epidemics which have affected the world.

Major viruses which started in China:

- Coronavirus 2020 - it is the Wuhan Flu
- Swine Flu (multiple occurrences latest 2019)
- SARS 2003
- Bird Flu 1997
- Hong Kong Flu - 1968
- Asian Flu - 1957

Think the plague (black death) will never run rampant again? There were two cases in China last year.

China needs the world. The world doesn't need China. Maybe if they were forced to observe basic sanitation and hygiene practices, things wouldn't be so damn cheap to produce in China.

We all need to realize what the Chinese Government is doing. This came from their country, it wasn’t planted in China by the US Army as they have implied.

Now they are going on a international program to accuse the US. China has to be dealt with as the Cold War Enemy that they are. Not saying we send the B2’s tonight, but I am suggesting that we move to a significantly different trade relationship. Our Trade Imbalance has given them allot of money that they have used to pour into their military. China has expansionist designs and they are preparing to confront the US. Seems like we should really understand what they are about and do as little as possible that helps them in achieving those goals.

This is going to be a long and unbearable couple of months
It's gonna suck for sure, but...

I think it would take organizations such as the G7 and NATO to work together. Russia is not a member of either organization and I suspect might trade more with China, but I don't know if that helps the Chinese government that much.

If there is any good to come of this the countries of the G7 must agree outsourcing the production of items which are directly related to national security should not be produced for the G7 countries by China. Those products must be predominately made in each G7 countries, or by another G7 ally. China is already threatening the U.S. pharmaceutical supply. American companies must face sanctions (high tariffs) if they continue to manufacture in China.

In some areas globalism is not a good idea.

Easily said, but tell that to a typical American to explain why things have doubled in price. For good or ill, we are inexorably tied to China, and that's not going to change in the foreseeable future.

I really don't think China has grand military designs. They know where their bread is buttered, there is zero reason for them to change the status quo. They just don't want us influencing their assets, and they know how much we love to meddle.

There's plenty of division between G7 countries though, and also within G7 countries. They have their hands full as it is, let alone taking on the challenge of decoupling from China.

Interesting times for sure. Since 1945, the only reset was the fall of the Berlin wall/collapse of the Soviets. Even that wasn't a stopping of the momentum of globalization though. 9/11 in a way. We'll only know for sure in hindsight, but who knows, this could be one of those foundational type moments.

Decoupling from China must take place for products that are essential for national security. The Chinese Communist government is not our friend. They are adversarial in their relationship to the United States. Trade can and should continue for non-essential items, but when it comes to things like antibiotics, other medicines, and rare earth materials, the U.S. and our allies should be making our own.

This is why threads focusing on COVID-19 need to be apolitical. I participate on several forums, and most have already streamlined those threads early on by strictly enforcing a no-politics policy. People need access to information. They shouldn't have to wade through childish political tantrums to do so.

Yea I agree. There was some poor foresight with that, putting all of our eggs in one basket. There's nothing wrong with trade with China, even though they aren't buddies they can be beneficial to work with. A lot of the tech and other things we do with them is rather worrisome. I think we've become a little lazy with our own manufacturing and we send things out just to save a buck or two. That needs to change for certain.

Over the years we've kind of had the same body of posters and we've generally let people correct themselves here, which usually works.

I may have to go full gestapo to get this one back on path if it keeps up.

475 deaths in Italy today. It will surpass China's official (likely false) death totals tomorrow.

Two weeks ago, Italy's death count was at 107, just below where we are of the moment (117).

The death rate in the US continues fall as more testing is done. It's now about 1.5% of reported cases. No way to have a real figure since we don't really know how many are infected and only a small number of people who have had it are recovered at this point.

And the peak, experts say, will be in late April..
Argh!
