What are yall even looking at. I know he had a career year that first year, that's what loving being a Leaf would do to ya. And there were some shiny #'s in that first year like the 47 goals. But really, dude's been steady except for last year, at near PPG status.

2018-191.07
2019-200.95
2020-210.89
2021-220.96
2022-231.00
2023-240.81
2024-250.95
Leaf Totals0.95

I think ya forget 2019 and 2020 were both shortened years for him, so the #'s look smaller. But - He is who he has always been. Just better if anything. His Isles 9 yrs = .928 vs .95 as a 7 yr Leaf.

So ya, we kinda got exactly what we paid for.

Since when did under a PPG get you 11M?

He’s overpaid, there’s nothing wrong with admitting that. He knows he’s overpaid too which is why he’s not asking for 11M on his next year.

Has he been productive? Yes. Would I re-sign him for 11M? No.

I’d rather have kept both Kadri & Hyman.

You mean 8M..??? A little rich, but ok.
Oh no, that's right!!! Dude was bought the f out from his actual cap hit of 8M cuz reasonz, and now has 9.5M in Salary still coming to him from that. So, of course he took a 1 year shave at 3M. Ain't no JT either.

Ridiculous comparable.

So realistically, without a buyout on top, you double that for JT and we agree - around 6 is a bargain, f'real.
last year was the year he signed after a buyout.
this year he signed one year one 3 million, because he was happy in Dallas and realized it was a good fit, good chance to win. sounds a little like JT.

last year he had the same 65 points as JT.
This year he is over a point a game, ahead of JT.
JT was more consistent early in his career, but last 3-4 years, there stats are pretty comparable.
Same age, and Duchene is faster. Not sure why that is a ridiculous comparable.

but I guess this is Toronto so we have to give even more money to some who already got close to 80 million for one playoff round in 6 years as the captain. Kopitar and Bergeron got paid because they brought cups.

6 is not bargain, and i wouldnt want him on the team at that, especially if we early exit this yaer again, try something else.

You're conflating the two. The point isn't since when did ppg get you 11M, its more since when was a guy of his calibre even available on free agency at the peak of his powers, and what is that worth. There is no doubt there was both a Free Agency and Franchise player surtax that brought that total to 11. That's just what it costs. Others were prepared to pay more (SJ). Based on those elements, he took a 2.5M cut (from 13.5). Context matters here. If he was a Leaf when he signed, and wasn't a franchise player in free agency - then sure, he likely signs at that time for 9.

If you didn't agree with the cost on day 1, and there were some that didn't - I get it. But to say the cost wasn't earned, based on what the player was doing before and now after the deal - well, that ain't right. We got what we signed up for, even if you didn't -or just don't like it now.

They're not close. But again, context matters. This guy got bought out, has 9M and change sitting in his back pocket for nothing over the next 6 years - and took a one year 3Miller cuz he finally felt comfy, after getting cut from his team.

That 3 is never happening for someone who actually performed on his contract throughout, never got the benefit of a buyout sum in near double figures and did what you asked of him. I just want fans to be realistic and not disappointed expecting something like 3, and yelling into their interwebs about it for eternity.
If he does get to 3, great. Dude's a saint then - at least he had the balls to come here, never forget that... But given the context again, you'd have to likely double that comfy 3. And while I understand YOU "wouldn't want him on the team at that" - that really has no bearing. The market will dictate it, and if you remove emotion and fallacies with other unicorn situations, the market tells you anything at or under a 6 is literally a steal.

He's been incredibly consistent this season. Only held pointless in consecutive games once, during a 3-game stretch at the beginning of November.

Johnny Toronto with his second hat trick this season… I think he’s going to play large in the playoffs.

Berube's style is suiting him a lot better so far.. he doesn't look one step away from washed and has been quite good so far this year. Might have to change my answer from 60% overpaid to 40% if he keeps this up.

Just in time for a new contract to make more than he would if last year was his final year lol

The Leafs need to be really tough on his resigning like Tampa was with Stamkos.

Tavares big signing set the stage for Dubas to completely screw up the cap structure of this team and this is where you start to unwind the disaster.

After his slump in January last season:

18 goals and 34 points in 36 games the rest of the way.

This season so far:

15 goals and 28 points in 30 games.

Far too many overreacted and made fools of themselves after that slump and are still in denial coming up with bizarre theories of why he's "better" this year. The guy has been one of the most consistent players in the league for years. It should'nt be a surprise he bounced back.

JT did nothing but give in this 7 year contract. You might hate the Dollars or termz, but he is BETTER here than he was an Islander - and so we got everything we paid for. Mr Consistent. And YEAR 7 is just as good as any!! "Shocker" !!

We all gotta now just pull for a guy that had the SAC to actually come home where the lights is brightest, and where none of these other cooked FA cowards would come!

And change the title of the dayum Thread already, hamza.... Or should we lock this one off and create another for the man. Big up, JT! You a pros pro f'real.

Fans will love him even more when he signs a very reasonable extension. Not sure if it will be long-term or short-term, but it won't be a big number. He will take a discount.

Even more, they’d love to be a Cup contender and I’m not sure Tavares would be an ingredient in that mixture.

Yeah can’t imagine he has any interest in packing up his family and moving away, he’s got an opportunity to win here and unfinished business. Offer him 2 mill less than market value and let’s find out how bad he wants to stay here.

Players earn the right to play where they want to play. The assumption that every player who comes from Toronto should want to play in Toronto just seems remarkably simplistic to me. Not evrybody wants to hang around their family or their childhood friends for their whole life. A player may not like the team's management or coaching style or they may not feel that the role the team wants them to play is right for them. Or they may simply feel that their chance of winning a Cup is greater elsewhere. Or perhaps their wife and family prefer to live somewhere else. Human beings, even hockey players, are complex creatures and may have many different resaons for the decisions they make. The idea that all players from the Toronto area who don't come back to Toronto to play for Leafs are doing so because they fear the spotlight just seems ridiculous and a little insulting to those players.
