He's 34 and hitting the father time wall. Slow footed, weak defensively, marginal offensively, decent strength.

The mistake will be extending him when it's clear he doesn't fit anywhere in a Berube lineup. Next summer Leafs need to sign a legit #3 with size.

Aside from how much he SHOULD get in an extension, the question should be why exactly do you want to extend him? What has he helped you win, what has the $11M annually actually netted you?

We're better off using that money to get a quality 2C and a Dman. Tavares today is invisible, next year he'll be a disaster.

He is like a league minimum guy now with some patches bonus framework to get him to 1.5m. That's all I see and I would rather close the book and send him off.

What does the guy do that says resign him. Doesn’t kill penalties, his PP usage is becoming limited. He wins faceoff which you can pay someone 9 mil less to do. He’s a boat anchor playing with Nylander. He had the C taken away from him. Never came close to his contract and the expectations that came with it.

Extending him I can’t see a play for him considering they’ll be asking 5+ for a guy that sits in front of the net and wins a faceoff.

Tavares is an alright guy, and I can't get too mad since he did take a paycut to come to the Leafs, but my god this guy is probably the primary reason the Leafs have 7 first round exits.

He put up a pretty good year 1. I thought that was going to be the standard for the next 3-4 years, instead huge declines. Completely unplayable near the back half.

By like year 3 he was already the 4th best player when we were aiming for something like Crosby/Malkin.

If the Leafs are fighting for in a playoff spot at the TDL, I’d ask him to waive his no move. JVR is still playing so I’m sure someone will take a chance on him, and the Leafs are owed a return on the 77 million they gave him.

He's basically at Spezza level when Spezza got here.

They better walk from him on July 1st unless he's taking the league minimum.

Why would JT have any interest in agreeing to go to Columbus?

The dilemma with re-signing Tavares is he would bring hockey value at a low cap hit but also historical baggage.

I’d put Domi ahead of JT in terms of on-ice impact, and Domi went for $3.75x5 as a UFA. Domi is a WAY better skater, more dynamic with the puck, makes more happen at even strength, I slightly prefer him on the PP too, and I think the 2 are a wash defensively.

I’d put McMann roughly on par with JT, and he went for $1.35x2 as a UFA, though that was definitely a steal.

Overall I think his fair market value is about $3 mil AAV, so he’s about $8 mil AAV overpaid IMO. I’d be cool with signing him to a short term deal at $3 mil AAV, but wouldn’t want to go long term at that cap, as he’s clearly declining. But if he’s getting ~$4-5 mil offers from other teams, and wants us to match, we should just walk, we can get better players for that price.
