Taraves @ $11 mil is likely the WORST overpaid contract in the NHL at his current production level >>> Patrick Marleau was in the last year of his $5.6 mil deal.

Tavares is likely to come in at 60-65 points if lucky this year . IMO

It's very bad this year. Most things Dubas had a hand in ended up an unmitigated disaster though.

Pickering, Ontario
...so the second year of a third year deal for Marleau
Yes, but Marleau would have put more pts on a better leafs team (offensively) then a bad Sharks team in 2020

He was cooked in year 3 but so is Tavares right now and he is at 11M.

Tavares is not getting PP1 spot on merit or ability anymore. He is getting that spot due to past play and reputation

Though if you want to disagree on tabares being the worst last year UFA ti marleau then he can be 2nd worst

I think the best thing to do is let him retire as a Leaf at the end of the season and sign him as a faceoff coach.

I was on board to re-signing him at a much lower cap hit after this season, but I think the best solution for the Leafs would be to completely move on from JT. Way too slow for today’s NHL and he’s become a turnover machine.

5 goals and 9 points in 9 games this season....

22 goals and 42 points with a 65% 5v5 goal differential and one of the best faceoff guys in hockey in his last 44 games after last years slump.

Future HOFer who gave up the captaincy with no complaints and is a total team player and class act his entire time here as a big name who wanted to come to our team.

Hard not to root for the guy, that's for sure.

I myself Is one of them
I have been telling folks that he started the season with a bad flu, he even mentioned how he dropped a bunch of weight and was struggling to keep up. I expect him to have a very strong November if he's back to 100% now.

5 goals and 4 assists in 9 games played… the “wouldn’t sign him for league minimum” crowd are not going to like that.

I've been primarily giving him a pass for all his years here because of the manner in which he arrived. As a UFA, he turned down more money to get into the frying pan. He also hasn't been controversial and has captained the team to the playoffs each year even though he also owns the playoff futility.

He is adapting his game over the years and is a nice fit for Berubes philosophy if he can maintain his front of the net posture.

Ultimately the core has to change though regardless. Especially if the cap hits are too high. He will be taking significantly less if he re-signs or Leafs must walk. Marner will not be taking less and will be the man out if the team is serious about winning, it's that simple.

Therein lies the scenario and everyone on the team knows it.

I don’t think he’ll be scoring a hat trick on a regular basis but the Jets game was a big statement. Still think in the long run you want to turn the page and just build a different program.

He is going to finish the season with like 70ish points and we will still have people in here saying they wouldn't sign him for more then 3 million a year lol

The fact it is the last year, the contract is ending right on time. Hopefully we can use that new cap space to sign Sam Bennett if he goes to UFA. Otherwise it now gives us some cap and roster flexibility that we haven't had since signing him.
