How much do the Leafs miss Kapanen?

not really ... he was redundant on this team .... we are stacked on the right side and don't need a 3+mil player playing on the 3rd/4th line.

also kappy for amirov and hallander as probably the most lopsided leafs trade in the last 20 years.
i would do that trade everytime

Before being put on a line with Matthews, his assist rate was one of the worst. Ever. For any NHL player.
The Leafs had knuckle-draggers who made more plays then he did. Think the best use for Kapanen was to
play a tight and safe game against another team's better lines and try to spring him lose for a breakaway.
He was useless in any potential give and go situation. The idea he was going to play with Crosby made me
laugh.

Talking on That's Hockey about Kap getting dropped from the top 6 just three games in... I'm flabbergasted anyone here thought he had top 6 potential and was waiting to break out, I liked having him but he doesn't play well with others until he figures that out it is never going to happen for him.

I know most of us accepted his tunnel vision meant there was no top 6 forward in there but there remained some stragglers.

I would say quite a bit? His speed and PK abilities were top notch. But with a salary cap, you can't keep everyone.

I do think he plateaud quite a bit though. He just never developed his offensive side enough.

I miss his breakaway speed and shooting into the goalies chest
I miss his lack of passing IQ
I miss his lack of hockey IQ

He has speed that’s it

If anyone thinks he will flourish in Pittsburgh and score 60 points they are crazy

Crazy thread this early in the season. He’s a chicken with his head cut off, Berezin without the scoring ability. That being said he is better than Vesey, he’s just straight trash

Don't miss him one bit. Wish him all the best, but the Leafs did extremely well in gaining cap space, Hallander and the recent first round pick in exchange for Kap.

I think Mikheyev basically covers all the Kapanen strengths while being quite a bit cheaper.

He does, but 2 is better than 1 I guess? I much prefer Kapanen over Simmonds in the same role, right? But considering the money, it's not feasible.

Either way, trade had to be done and the value of Amirov and Hallander seems really really good considering everything.

Well, considering Thornton, Vesey and Simmonds all combine to make less than Kapanen's salary, yeah, we can't afford Kapanen's very limited contribution.

Yep, but I still think the Leafs miss the element he added to our 3rd line. Mikheyev is really good too, but Kapanen there instead of Simmonds and it's much better.

I do think the Leafs miss Kapanens abilities to a certain degree, even if they aren't hugely missed.

I think Kerfoot's ability to run around with the puck at speed also helps, though stylistically he would be more similar to an Andreas Johnsson.

Maybe they could try Mikko Lehtonen on the wing...

i like both kappy and aj, they both have their skills and make us better if we had them right now

but the salary just didnt fit and we found robertson, joe, and mikheyev to provide a lot of the same thing for a fraction of the money, nice job by the guys upstairs

and with the top boys not taking much cuts, we have to keep making smart financial decisions like this to maintain solid enough depth

That's basically it

If he just had 1 other thing that could match his speed, he would be useful.

Yeah don't get me wrong I'd rather have him than not but I'd hardly say I miss him. And I don't expect him to ever be a good top 6 player.

I'm a Pens fan and come in peace. I usually watch 50% of the leafs games as they are fun to watch. This year, however I haven't gotten a chance to yet.

When I watched the Leafs in previous years I really liked the way Kapanen pushed the pace. Tonight is his debut in a Pens sweater. Its unsure to me whether he'll be miscast in Pittsburgh. I like what he brings but is he a top 6?

Not sure.

No, he is a 2 direction player ...great 3rd liner, and awesome PKer and thats his sweet spot. ...can part time on #2, but, shouldnt be on the #1 line
he's pretty much a Grabner clone

I think we do miss some of Kapanen/AJ speed and skill in the bottom 6. That said, we will probably add a winger at the deadline.

It was more important to get Brodie and fix the top-4 defense than keep Kapanen.

We miss their speed on ELC contracts.

Once those guys got paid, I was very quickly underwhelmed with the cost/result equation. I am glad we moved them both out.
