Really? Barzals winning goal last night was pretty razzle dazzle.

Tampa has scored a tonne of razzle dazzle goals this playoffs and last.

Yon need both.
I’m would be ok with both but we don’t get both from Marner and for 11 million dollars that’s a big big problem

I’m not sure I understand your response.
I thought we were comparing who, out performed who.
Ranatanen out performed Marner by a wide margin and I didn’t even go all the way back to the 18 playoff games that he has only scored 1 goal in.
The season that just ended Marner had 20 goals and 47 assists playing with the best shooter in the NHL.
Rantanen had 30 goals and 36 assist. He sounds like the better all round player even befor you add in the fact that he blows Marner out of the water in the post season
As far as I understand, there was one singular precedent of a contract comparable including a playoff performance and that was in an arbitrated case. All contract models use regular season performance. In the case of Marner, his comparable was almost identical to kane who's cap adjusted contract was north of 9mm over 5 years. An extra year would yield 10ish.

Have you factored in the massive escrow payments that the players currently owe the teams because of all the money the teams lost during the last 2 seasons? The cap will not rise until that has been paid back. Most hockey financial experts think it will take 4 years before the cap begins to move up
There is a targeted revenue amount that the league has hit on 2 occasions that will trigger 2mm

Oh ok. I thought we were comparing who was the better player in the playoffs. Marner or Rantanen…….my bad
In some weird way that even makes it worse. Marner plays great in the regular season when it has a direct effect on his pay cheque but shits the bed in the playoffs because they are not factored into contract negotiations.

Sounds good and I hope you are right because the cap going up is one of the things that could help pull us out of this mess

Why would Brayden Point sign his deal after a 40+ goal 90+ point season? And as a Selke caliber centreman?

3 years @ 6.75M per.

He signed that short term bridge deal because he wanted cups... Which he got. His next contact will be massive. I would presume Tampa might even try to move him.

You wanted marner for 3 years at 8m?

Nylander is paid too little? To date, he has underperformed his contract.
Marner outperformed Rantanen and deserved more than him
First of all BS, if Nylander has underperformed his contract then Marner hasn’t even come close to living up to his. Nylander has paced for 65+ two times in a row, and he has been at worst equal to Marner in the playoffs. His production in the playoffs is 15P in 19GP, a 64 point pace, which would be around fair value, especially if he signed for 6.5 x 8. Marner has paced for 100+ 1 time and it was this year, his playoffs however have been abysmal, 0G 12A, in 19GP, which is a 52 point pace. Relative to expectations, nylander has lived up to his contract as good if not better than Marner has to date. That can be subject to change.

moving on;
On 8 years, a 65 point winger gets 6.5x8 instead of the 6 the post I quoted said, on 8 years Marner gets 9.5-9.75 instead of the 8 the poster said. He’s had 1 year where he paced for 100 point and it was after he signed his contract.

At the time of signing, he came off a 94 point season, and Rantanen came off a 96 point pace, but 87 points. Marner should’ve gotten around what rantanen got, instead Marner took more money. Maybe you missed it where I said at the top indicating it’s all for 8 years.

Good god. Nylander should be Pacing at 75 points per 82 game season for the contract he signed. Marner in the 90's.
Go learn to count.

Nylander needs to be producing at a rate above 1 pt/100k but marner can produce at less than 1pt/100k for their contracts to be fair? How does that work?

If Nylander at 6.96x6 needs to produce 75 pts/82 games for a fair deal (works out to ~10.78 pts /million dollars)

Marner then has to produce 10.9x10.78 = 117.5 (118) pts/82 games for his deal to be relatively as fair a bargain

Your expectations for Nylander are too high at 6.96

65 pts per82 is good for Nylander at 6.96

102 pts per 82 is good for Marner at 10.9

This is the regular season stats…….it’s the playoffs that really count. That’s where the cup is awarded.
The regular season means basically nothing

My god. The regular season doesn’t mean anything. Production stats for the regular season just affect the players pay cheque.
It’s the playoffs where a player should show his worth

So wait….
6.969 = 75
10.893= 90+?

What type of math is that? Are you sure you learned how to count yourself dude cuz that don’t make any sense.

nylanders cap hit is 70th in the league, Marners is 7th, your telling me the difference between the 70th best player and 7th is 15 points?

So, Marner doesn’t need to improve past his contract signing but nylander does?

The difference in cap hit doesn’t equate to the difference in production in your post. Marners cap hit is around 1.55x higher than nylanders but his production only needs to be 1.20x higher?? Then why’d Marner get paid the most for a winger if he’s not even gonna be top 5 in his position?

You don’t know what his next contract will look like and I really doubt Tampa tries to move their most important forward..

...and where did I say anything about an 8M bridge for Marner?

I’d be hesitant to give Marner 8x8. On a 3 year term I’m looking in the 6-6.5 range.

If Mitch wasn’t good with either I would have let him hold out for a deal I like, or, take the OS compensation and let someone else deal with the headache.

Maybe that's the problem. Players don't get paid a salary in the playoffs. GMs and agents negotiate salaries based almost entirely on regular season stats. Yet some stars have trouble producing in the playoffs, while some lesser players thrive.

Not sure there's a salary cap fix for that.

As the biggest Nylander fan I don't think he is better than Marner. I think Marner slots in at 9M x 6, Nylander 7M x 6.
Still makes me angry that we paid 2M more for Marner than Rantanen. Still makes no sense to me.

Marner 32 playoff games 25 points
Nylander 32 playoff games 23 points

Whether Marner is over paid or not is a discussion to be had, whether or not Marner is one of the best players in the NHL, that is clear.
