How Much Better Than Nylander Is Marner?

Longest of my life. Worst part is with this epic blunder of a postseason i don't even care about the regular season anymore.

I mean we won our division and got bounced in the first round, for me to truly care I'd need to see them get out of the first.

Marner is better but not by much. The difference is not 4 million. The same flaws people talk about with Nylander are the ones Marner has. Marner just makes fancy passes better.

Thing is When he signed that contract, it was off the 94 point year with John Tavares and the 4 in 7 against Boston playing against the shut down line. Don’t forget that the ZH-JT-MM line was so sound defensively that Cassidy had to move pastrnak off the top line cuz he couldn’t produce. I’d say 9-9.5 x 8 coming off that year was fine, his playoffs have been mediocre since but taking into account the signing time, I’d say this is fair value.

That kind of reasoning is how you end up with a Jeff Skinner contract. I would have never been ok with that contract. Ever.

Offensively: Guys just seem to have career years playing with Marner. Bozak, JVR, Tavares and Matthews.

Defensively: Both Leafs coaches he's played under have trusted him with the toughest minutes.

Special teams: Nylander has the edge on the PP because he's more versatile. Marner kills penalties, which isn't as big a deal as people make it out to be.

Overall, I'd say $3M difference is fair.

While I get what you're saying, at least next season will be more interesting than watching them play Van or Cal three games in a row all season. The "stretch" will be much more interesting as they'll likely be battling for a PO spot rather than coasting along in first.

Marner is a better player but was never 4mil better esp when you look at what the others RFAs got in the same off season.
He is the second highest Paid winger in the League and the 7th highest paid player in the league. His comparable is not McDavid after his 94pts season.

For me it’s really a toss up. Offensively, I give the edge to Nylander (basically due to his shot). Defensively, the edge goes to Marner due to his PK abilities.

Why on earth are you hating against Nylander? He was our best player
He looked completely poised vs the habs .. had 8p in 7 games and is a 65 point winger making 6.9 mill a year. He's doing what he gets paid to do and is 100% worth his cap.

I expect nobody else but Matthews and JT to lead this team.

This does kind of sting. Keefe made WAY too many decisions that most fans wouldn’t agree with:

- AM - MM together whole series
- Didn’t try to get said line away from danault
- Ran them 24-30 minutes
- Put an injured foligno to replace kerfoot in nylanders line
- Brought in Sandin at the wrong time, we were coming off a 4-0 shutout, who changes something there, what can you expect better
- Played Joe PP1 for too long
- The Power Play Goal Challenge…..

these are somethings that I can remember that I and most fans disagreed with. The players didn’t perform, but when they don’t, it’s the coaches job to put those players in roles where they can succeed.

You can’t tell me if Marner played 2-5 less minutes on the PK, that they’d score a magical pp goal, marners talent needed to be used offensively, whether that was to create a 3rd line for him, play him with nylander, or play his whole line against different competition.

Keefe has no clue how this works. It’s like he watched Babcock’s film and just reversed the points. He needs an assistant coach who’s been around the league for a while and has experience who can point out when he is making dumb decisions
