Want some more frustration? Ducks are 12 points ahead of the kings and just 2 points behind in the battle for the division. Over the course of the 73 games both have played, the Ducks have all of 9 more goals. That's just 1 more goal every 8 games played. Worse, they've given up just 1 fewer goal than the kings -- all season.

I know I shouldn't but I am starting to believe the Kings can make it to the playoffs. One game at a time at this point.

After the games of 3/26:

STL's pace is still 95, two more points than the Kings' max.

The Kings' tragic number sits at 8 points, 7 if they include three ROW by the Blues.

most likely the question is who will shoot par come April 10?

they aren't going anywhere, the train left the station weeks ago and they missed it.

Here's a quadruple whammy. If the Kings lose tonight against the Oilers, the Ducks clinch a spot no matter what they do in their game, the Oilers clinch a spot, and I believe SJ would also clinch a spot. Then if the Flames beat the Kings tomorrow, the Flames clinch a spot.

That would be a fitting end to this season.

I've noticed the Ducks GF/GA split v. LA's for most of the season and how it hasn't been much different, at least not 12 points better different at first blush.

Comes down to the Kings losing by 1 goal a lot, at least it feels that way. GF then gets boosted up by a couple of ass-kickings. The games in Toronto and Florida come to mind.

You can look at it as home losses to Phi, Car, Det, Dal, Ari, Fla, Van, and Ari again. 0-7-1 in those 8 games, and outscored 32-17. Without those games, the Kings are 35-25-6, with a +11 goal differential. Still not great, but they would be in the race.

They just lost too many games at home in regulation to not great teams.

Which seems to be a hallmark of the Kings the past three seasons: too many points left on the table against **** teams.

I guess if you lose to that many **** teams at home, it makes you a **** team as well. On the flip side, that stat should provide fuel to those arguing for a slight retool with a coaching change.

How many were these one goal loss games were padded by scoring a goal super late in the third when the game is basically over.

It's the give and take of the Sutter system though. Lots of close games means you'll almost never be out of a game--but neither will your opponent.

Yeah, goes both ways, that's why the last 74 games have been so frustrating.

Against the Metro:
Sharks, .700
Kings, .594
Ducks, .531
Flames, .469
Coyotes, .433
Oilers, .406
Canucks, .313

Against the Atlantic:
Sharks, .719
Flames, .688
Ducks, .656
Oilers, .563
Coyotes, .469
Canucks, .438
Kings, .406

Against the Central:
Oilers, .690
Flames, .667
Kings, .625
Ducks, .605
Canucks, .524
Sharks, .450
Coyotes, .278

Against the Pacific:
Oilers, .705
Ducks, .667
Sharks, .604
Flames, .543
Canucks, .523
Coyotes, .463
Kings, .455

Top 3 in the division against the Metro and Central. Too many losses against Atlantic and Pacific teams. 0-4 against Boston and Tampa. Regulation losses at home to Detroit and Florida, and another in Buffalo. That's 14 points, and the Kings got 0.

0-1-1 against the Coyotes at home. 2 regulation losses to Vancouver, 1 at home, 1 on the road. They're 5-5-1, and 4-5-2 in regulation, at home against Pacific teams. They had a 3-0 lead at home in that first game against Vancouver this year, and won 4-3 in a SO. This close to being 0-3, with two home losses, to the Canucks, who currently reside in 27th place.

The games against Detroit, Florida, Buffalo, and the 4 against the Coyotes and Canucks, all winnable. I know Florida was red hot at the time, but still. That's 14 points, and the Kings got 1.

By my reckoning, the Blues have clinched a tie in the ROW tiebreaker, and a win in the head to head against the Kings, bringing LA's tragic number down to 3 points.

I know it isn't over until it's over, but... I don't have any hope whatsoever.

Basically, if the Kings win out (5 of 6 games have to be won in regulation/OT) AND Preds lose 4 of their last 5 games - all in regulation), Kings are in, because they would hold the first tiebreaker.

Predators schedule is quite tough in the next 3 games (back to back against Wild and Blues), but their last two games are against Dallas and Winnipeg so I wouldn't count on them screwing it all up.

With Calgary, there is no margin for error, they need to lose out (4 of 5 in regulation) for the Kings to have a remote chance.

In other words, Kings were doomed long before I started making these desperate calculations.

Kopitar.

Preds won. Preds can't get any points for the remainder of their games and the Kings must win all remaining 5 games.
