I don't see the three swedes making it "collectively"... if that makes any sense. But they'd make it individually.

In other words : I don't think OEL makes it if Karlsson and Hedman make it as well. But if Karlsson and Hedman don't exist, OEL makes it.

The interesting question, however, is which of Hedman or Karlsson is taken first.

Yeah, I'm assuming the hypothetical is: could they make it, rather than would they make it. Because realistically there are very few players who would be locks on Team Canada (Ovechkin is an obvious one, Karlsson is a likely one).

Oh god you take Hedman over Hjalmarsen ok see how many Championships you win

Who are those players replacing?

Well the Russians can replace probably almost half our current forwards. Malkin and Ovechkin are going to play over O'Reilly, Getzlaf, Thorton, Duchene, Couture, Perry, Marchand, Giroux, and Bergeron.

Bouwmeester, Muzzin, and Vlasic would not make it over OEL, Karlsson, and Hedman

Lundqvist over Crawford

Kane over Perry and Marchand for wingers

Kopitar over O'Reilly and Getzlaf for a centre

Rask over Crawford

Crosby, Tavares, Toews, Bergeron + Benn and Seguin (assuming they are healthy) are locks for this team. After this tournament, Marchand would probably be a lock to keep that line together. That is 7 guys on forward. Leaving 5 spots open (or 6 with the extra forward). Ovechkin, Malkin, Kopitar, Kane and Pavelski would be my picks. Extra forward is very tough.

Doughty, Keith and Weber seem like locks for Canada. This is where it gets tough. Hedman and Karlsson seem like they would be in. The last 2 spots would probably be fought out between McDonagh, Suter, OEL and Josi.

In nets, I would do Price, Holtby and Lundqvist.

Leaving:

Brad Marchand - Sidney Crosby - Patrice Bergeron
Jamie Benn - John Tavares - Tyler Seguin
Alexander Ovechkin - Anze Kopitar - Evgeni Malkin
Joe Pavelski - Jonathan Toews - Patrick Kane
* (Steven Stamkos, Nick Backstrom, Vladimir Tarasenko)

Duncan Keith - Erik Karlsson
Victor Hedman - Drew Doughty
Ryan Suter - Shea Weber
* (OEL, Roman Josi, Ryan McDonagh)

Carey Price
Henrik Lundqvist
* Braden Holtby

That, IMO, is the best team that can be assembled out of NHL players.

Neither Malkin or Ovechkin would make it over Bergeron. They play a completely different role. Same with Vlasic, non of those 3 D are better then him at the role he plays. We play a defensive style of play why would we replace our defensive players for offensive players?

You have to consider why a player is on the team and then figure out if the new player is better then the current player in that role. Canada wins because we built a team that plays a style and if players don't fit that style or are not the best at one of the few roles that is against that style they wont make it.

Subban and Letang are clearly better then Bouwmeester and Muzzin but failed to make it because we only had 1 offensive D spot and Burns got that spot.

Taylor Hall did not make the team and Giroux is the extra meanwhile Couture and O'Rielly play every game.

We play a system and have players fitting roles. We are not using many one way players so if you got guys replacing our guys they need to be replacing players who they play a similar game to.

In this scenario I'm assuming it's a one for one swap for a Canadian player and not an "everyone I pick would replace a member of team Canada.

Malkin, Ovechkin, Karlsson, Hedman, Josi, Kopitar, and Kane.

Thornton, Giroux, Stamkos, Bouwmeester, Burns, Vlassic, Duchene, O'Reilly, Couture, Marchand, and Pietrangelo could be replaced without too much fuss with the elite talent listed above. Simply writing Bouwmeester opens up the door for A LOT of other defensemen. It's probably easier to pick the guys on Canada who would be locks:

Crosby, Toews, Bergeron, Tavares, Doughty, Keith, Weber, Benn, and Price.

No way Canada drops the best defensive defensman (Vlasic) while we are playing a defensive system. Vlasic would also be the perfect partner for Karlsson.

The forwards are a bit lacking on the defensive side of the game. I'd assume they would want to use one of the more offensive ones as a extra and bring someone better at D in to use in the main roster.

Also Crawford > Holtby as shown by Canada using Crawford as their number 2 while Holtby is number 3. Might take one of the US goalies (not quick) over Crawford though.

On the other hand, every player on Team Canada can make any other team.

Not sure that is true for the defenders.

Would Muzzin make team Sweden for example? Maybe not. Would burns make it? Yeah, maybe. But his role is already filled by Karlsson so it not exactly a done deal.

All other roosters would be upgraded with any canadian player though.

Karlsson, Hedman, Lundqvist, kopitar, Ovechkin, Malkin, and Kane are the only ppl that can make it. Some ppl are saying gaudreau oel can make it... but canada doesnt like soft one dimensional players
