How many 60 goal seasons will Auston Matthews put up in his career?

Why is everyone saying this season is different? He was on pace for over 60 last season, and the season before 55... and that was with Babcock being fired to start the year after the teams slow start.

I get what people mean about tempting fate. This thread kinda sucks. But Matthews has been playing like this for a while just no one would give him credit because of shortened seasons..

Likely a few, he's the best goal scorer in the world.

Worth noting that a large part of it would be due to league-wide scoring increases. Most of Ovechkin's 50 goal seasons (including his half-lockout) would end up as 60 goal seasons in the current scoring environment.

For example, here are the 1/2/5/10/20/30th place goal finishes from 14/15 and for this year right now

2014/2015Current year
#153.0058.00
#243.0050.00
#537.0042.00
#1033.0038.00
#2028.0033.00
#3027.0031.00

Scoring right now is ~15% higher (with still 10 games to go in the season). Ovechkin's 14/15 is pretty much a 65 goal season in today's values. Passes the eye-test for me as well since 36 year-old Ovechkin is scoring at a 52 goal pace. Would be reasonable to expect a 29 year old Ovechkin to produce higher than that.

Ovechkin would have flirted with 60 two other times. His 14/15 season, adjusted for average scoring rate, would have been a shade under 60. Same with his 08/09

Oh, please.

2015 Ovechkin is not on current Matthews’ level goalscoring wise. No mental gymnastics is going to change that. As of now, 2008 Ovechkin is the only version you could argue as being ahead of current Matthews as a goalscorer.

if he gets two more goals, he'll finally have 1 in his 6th NHL season and since this is the first time he's broken 50, i'll say 2 and be generous that he could repeat it once more before his NHL career ends

I think he'll do it Twice.

Once this season, Another time in the next couple Years.

He is the best Goal Scorer since Ovechkin, and I think the slightly higher scoring era will let him score 60 at least one more time.

he's had a hard time staying healthy. He's all but a lock for this year. Maybe 1 or 2 more provided he stays healthy

the crazy thing about Matthews season this year is his shooting percentage is about the same as it usually is. When guys have huge years like this usually their shooting percentage is an outlier, but not Matthews

Another Mathews thread? Jeez.....

Anyways, I'll say 2. He's so damn good it's crazy, but this year has been so weird that I think we may see another drought in the 60 goals mark.

Depends on whether or not league wide scoring remain at this level [or increase for that matter]. As long as we don't revert back to dead puck era scoring levels, I can picture him doing it several times.

I'll say this is is only one and he settles into 50 goal range. His pace last year was great but playing in the Canadian division where McDavid went nuts. Also he has been healthy the last few years but before that he didn't have a history of 80 game seasons.

Scoring is up like 20+% this year from 2015. If this is the new reality, then I am certain he can hit it again playing with Marner and getting close to a full season. If not…

It’s fun being excited about everyone having career seasons and breaking notable plateaus, and certainly better than the opposite, but we need a grain of salt with everything when we’re looking at at least 10 100+ point scorers, ~7 50+ goal scorers, and like 50+ P/GP players.
