How do you improve the Wings?

Go get a really solid 3# LHD with a few years in the league. Alot of problems will be solved by having 2 pairings that you can rely on 20+ minutes a night.

Most of the other issues we see will solve themselves, the addition of another top-10 pick this year will be great.

But other than that, we haven't seen the Yzerplan in full action yet, his plan includes ASP, Cossa, Danielson, MBN, Mazur, Buch, Wallinder, Plante, Augustine, Lombardi and Brady Cleveland (;)). Not all will hit, but hopefully one of Kiiskinen, NDN or Finnie will hit instead.

  1. Accept the tank and to pursue a Top 4 pick, provide controlled playing time for prospects for experience and assessment of their progress, and stack as much future value as possible with non-core assets
  2. Trade Patrick Kane, save him till the TDL to reduce his caphit and remove his protestations about disruption to his family, etc. - sell him on a cup run (FLA, WAS, TOR) - feels like a 2nd Rd pick (55+ range)
  3. Trade Alex Lyon to a goalie-needy team near the cap - sooner the better to start the tank (again, a 2nd feels accurate given the cap hit, CAR, VAN)
  4. There is probably a world where Tyler Motte, Christian Fisher could be moved but I fail to see the point at this junction and just let it ride with depth
  5. Throughout the rest of the 24-25 season, run rotations around Wallinder, Buium, Mazur, Hanas, and Soderblom on multiple game stints up and then swapping out to get them exposure and see if any of them have a future
  6. Make sure to finish in the Bottom 5 of the League

Off-season!

  1. Line up a 2nd Pair RHD and offer draft capital (from the 2024 TDL) + Rasmussen/Veleno to secure a veteran LHD on a decent contract and term (2-3yrs) to confidently slot in the 2nd to carry
  2. Do not get F***** by the lottery and secure a Top 5 Lottery Pick
  3. If you do get F***** by the lottery and end up with..8th or something, offer all your picks in 2025 with the team with 5th OA to move up
  4. Draft Hagens, Martone, Misa, Frondell, or Desnoyers - whatever elite forward you can get your hands on
  5. Try to offload Chiarot, Holl, or Gustafsson final yr to teams looking for defensive depth (given the rising cap, some might take a chance on adding a vet sub 5M with 1yr left)
Go into next year with:

Debrincat - Larkin - Raymond
Compher - Martone - Tarasenko
Mazur - Kasper - Berggren
(vet/rookie) - Veleno - Copp

Edvinsson - Seider
Chiarot - R. Andersson*
Johansson - Holl
Wallinder

Talbot
Cossa

*using Rasmus as a plug - potentially obtainable, 2yr left, good two-way D, could carry Chiarot while ASP gets ready

After the 2025-26, replace Holl, Chiarot, Andersson, Talbot, Tarasenko with Sandin-Pelikka, Brandsegg-Nygard, Augustine

Fixed for you

Here's how you,, personally, can fix the Wings. Take some time to seriously review all the things you've done for good luck and pick the best one. Doesn't matter what it is. Prayer, chants, meditation, tying shoelaces or taping your hockey stick a specific way. Remove yourself from civilization for nearly three years, doesn't natter where you go or if you bring loved ones so long as you don't have access to any source of news News will only test and probably break your faith in the act that has always brought you good fortune and contentment with life. Every day, maybe multiple times a day, practice that best way to bring good luck. Don't forget to order the weekly helicopter drop of food, potable water, etc. Return to civilization in October 2027. The Wings will be fixed and you can take all the credit.

Nashville being dead last is insane
We should help them and ourselves and send them compher since they need C help lmao

Now that Cossa got sent down, I'm 100% pro tank. I think a top 4 pick is the only way to fix this mess.
Took cossa leaving after 1 game to see the light ? Lol keeping him here would only ruin him . We gotta fix this defense by next season

Yzerman needs to eat salary on chiarot etc... and just get it done

Wings have played 11 straight one-goal (including 2-goal EN) games, 13 of the last 14. They've narrowed the huge SOG disparity from earlier in the season. Whether it's because they are grinding or just dragging teams down to their level, they've been in almost every game for the past month. Their record in that time is 5-6-3 which is probably fair, could be a bit better, could be a bit worse. No one in management, coaching room or locker room is ready yet to write off the season. They're not going to move a lot of guys, especially if it requires retention, or start calling up prospects for a series of screentests, so a lot of these so-called fixes are just nonsense at this point, fans being Chicken Littles saying the sky is falling or wanting the sky to fall in order to pick a guy who's probably not going to be as good as Raymond or Larkin, both of whom bring a lot more than points. They could use a couple more Raymonds and another Larkin and they might have already drafted those guys without tanking, and they'll try again next June regardless of where they pick.

If things go (further) south there could be a coaching change. Until that happens or even if it does, they are probably in the market for someone who can play 20 minutes on the second pair. Not a lot of those guys are available because most other teams are also not ready yet to give up on the season. They're not going to trade a top 7-8 prospect or first-round picks, so the solution, if one is ever found, is likely to be underwhelming or at least not a mid-20s long-term solution. If they clean up their PK and get good goaltending, they are going to stay in touch with the WC race until the TDL and that's when things will happen.

Where is Elmer Soderblom? I rather play him over Motte. What the hell does he bring?

I'm at a complete loss as to what Motte brings to the team.

When he was signed, he was sold as a high-end defensive, agitating, energy guy. I was hoping for a Kirk Maltby. From what I've seen so far, he's more of a Cory Emmerton. Useless.

There's some glaring holes out there that keep us from really doing anything consistently good

• Why the hell is Ras - Kasper - Kane a thing for the 2nd game in a row?

• Our bottom 6 sucks, because the players playing there are not true crash-and-bang guys, and are not skilled enough to hang around a top 6. Surround your Comphers or Copps (half-decent role players) with big fast physical guys like your Pospisils and Kastelics and Hathaways. Those guys can raise hell. I am okay with Fischer on the 4th line, but he's on the slower side

• With a strict realignment of players, our top 6 looks half decent if it would be:

Debrincat - Larkin - Kane
Berggren/Tarasenko - Kasper - Raymond

...Yet, it's riddled with small and mostly defensively weak wingers - not a successful recipe. Get one or two Kreider-types with speed, weight to throw around and decent goal scoring touch

• Tarasenko looked good as a 3rd liner on a deep Florida team, but the lack of depth here makes him not much more than just a guy out there. He's not a shooting threat at all, and that was his calling card during his prime

• Defense, you know the story. Need a better 2nd pair. Also play Johansson consistently. Hasn't given reason yet to be in the press box as much as he is

Start selling, Veleno first, Kane second , couple defansman, one goalie

Veleno seems like a nice guy, minus the skate stomp. But he's entered Zadina territory in the sense.. if you can't do anything, it's time to go away. I doubt he would be claimed if waived. Shake the tree, bring up someone with some zest. Veleno looks like he purposely plays the game a half step slower than he can.. to not make a mistake and never take a risk. Very vanilla for a guy fighting for a spot on a rebuilding team. Not an uncommon on this team, they are coached or playing a system that suppresses creativity. They don't have the current build to play any particular way effectively it seems.

I have a soft spot for Ras because he seems like a low maintenance guy but again, what are the providing?

The obvious candidates on this team to dislike are obvious on our back end but the guys who are our "bridge" players don't currently seem like they care if they get another contract, not with the Wings at least.

Cat has his limitations but I think he's been very consistent this year. He is not a product of Kane as we may have worried. I'd resign him when he's due. The "core" is a very loose term, if I had to place a bet... I'd say 6-8 players from the current team are here in 2 years. 2 mainly because of contracts. 6 guys on the team you'd feel comfortable with as net positive players going forward with.

One thing that would help, if Michael Rasmussen turned into what Aliaksei Protas has become this year.

That is exactly what Ras should be but sadly is nowhere close.

It's seriously sell time. Yzerman needs to make moves before certain teams sure up some serious needs.

Carolina is begging for a consistent goalie. Devils would Love Kane on the PP with Hughes to keep that #1 unit and the same with Dallas(if Kane would go to either place). Jets/Wild need extra scoring help to outpace each other.

Red Wings can fill all those teams' "needs". We have a few guys like Fischer/Motte/Petry who could be moved for peanuts, and no one would be upset about it.

AT the TDL I'm not convinced Dallas wouldn't do something centered around Larkin/Wyatt Johnston but honestly that's way too dramatic for this management group.

Expect Fischer/Lyon dealt for lower round picks. Draft, sign some trash in the summer. Rinse and repeat.

Most fans already think a 7 year rebuild is fine what's 3-5 more years matter.

Rasmussen has simply chosen to not be what we(mgmt) had hoped...he is at best a 4th liner winger for the next few years, then will bounce around teams signing 1 year deals then exit the league w/o a peep

I think the only plan at this point is to wait two more seasons.

Most of the bad contracts will be off the books and hopefully most of our current prospects will be ready (and great).

I get so upset everyone is always ok with this. Like we can't do anything or fire anyone I do get it but man.

Franchise is hardly trying (it's why they didn't make a TDL move last year). They've got this "plan" that they seem ready to ride or die by, and they're going to die by it. The train is going way off the tracks and idk if IT's Yzerman but the management group as a whole seems to have a HUGE discount from the fans and what they want.

Ownership has clearly said you've got X amount of time before anything is expected and it seems like they are milking that timeline for every single drop. They're operating worst than Buffalo/Ottawa imo, those two teams are at the least TRYING to get out of their ruts with trades, etc. Yzerman doesn't make moves for players unless THEY want to come HERE. *DeBrincat/Kane* Which honestly, I'm not giving him a ton of credit for bringing in because it's easy to bring in talent that wants to be here. lol.

Protas this season: 11 goals, 15 assists, 26 points in 28 games

Rasmussen this season: 4 goals, 4 assists, 8 points in 28 games

Guess which one was taken 9th overall, and which was taken at the end of the 3rd round.

Playing Buffalo earlier in the week, the Sabres have two 6'6" forwards, Thompson and Greenway. Now, Thompson, is relatively soft, but has 1st-line offensive skills which is unique for a guy that size. Greenway, on the other hand, has virtually no offensive skills, but is tough and mean and is properly intimidating for a guy that size. Rassmussen, by contrast, has below-average offensive skills AND is incredibly soft for a player his size. He brings neither of the pluses that the two Buffalo players bring yet combines each of their individual weaknesses.

What else can they do? Detroit isn't a desirable UFA destination right now and the Wings aren't in a position to be trading first round picks and high end prospects. So, sadly without taking that expected step forward this year we kinda have to wait for more prospects to come in and prove themselves, and let the bad contracts expire...other than that it's hope and pray some high end UFA has interest signing here or another team really values Soderblom or Wallinder.
