It begs the question that if we take a Euro playing in this tournament, is he still a "Hakan" pick if Yzerman and all of the NA scouts watch him? Similarly does a NA pick become a Hakan pick if Hakan is watching him at this tournament?

That roster looks better than Winnipeg and Washington, and those teams are tops in their conferences respectively.

We aren't ever going to be a team that out guns other teams. We simply didn't get the draft luck. We are going to need a team like the Bergeron Bruins, Kopitar Kings, O'Reily Blues. I think this is a really solid 2 way team.

Its a team built out from the back end. Its success would ultimately be determined by if Cossa or Augustine hit because you need the goalie to go with that D. I think that D will be a top 5 in the league and if Cossa or Augustine hit you are looking at a dominant defensive team.

I think a lot of fans have PTSD from our current D of the past 5 years and have forgotten how much a good D can transform a team both offensively and defensively. You give the forward group from last year a good D that can actually transition the puck and I think our scoring issues are a lot less of a concern. We scored like 10 goals all year in transition. We were lucky if we got 2 odd man rushes a game and they were rarely our top line players.

The more I think about it…. There’s just nothing about keeping Larkin and DeBrincat that makes any sense at all.

They both have 3-4 yrs of prime left.

It’s going to take 3-4 yrs for us to get TO our sc-competitive window.

And these guys are going to be overpaid, over-the-hill 3rd liners FOR our sc-competitive window.

Wouldn’t you rather have four 1st Rd picks entering their primes on the team for our SC-window?

I do really like Gavrikov. By the numbers he’s a top 30 defenseman in the league when you measure his impact. Not great offensively but defensively? He’s a Ryan McDonaugh. We absolutely need that. I’d be willing to pay 8.5 for that and wouldn’t be shocked if LA signs him for that.

Trade Cat and Larkin and hope 2 firsts pan out and will take 2-3 years to get here? Maybe of it was guaranteed it was McKenna or elite caliber but we could also end up with a Zadina or Rasmussen. I dont know why everyone is calling for scorched earth here. We aren't that far off, Yzerman never thought we'd compete with Talbot Lyon Campbell Hutch Husso etc. The needle moves when Cossa comes up i think anyways. As for the shit contracts like Holl and compher and Copp etc they were never a plan for the future hence why they aren't on long contracts. They all expire when we are ready to trust compete which would be potentially 2 years from now..

Fact: if after 7 consecutive non playoff position draft picks under SY and 9 total in a row, the DRW roster is so bad fans wanna trade away 2 of its top 3 forwards for more magic beans, then 100% for a fact the GM is the problem...

At this point SY HAS to have a stable full of high caliber prospects and young players or he's the problem, as no team has made more draft picks since SY became the GM in Detroit...no other team.

Its time to start adding more supporting talent and folding in more and more of our own prospects to this roster...no more tanking for top picks...we need talent not remove it

Absolutely no on the picks. If we trade DBC or Larkin for picks we are probably looking at back half of the 1st. Statistically we'd be lucky to land someone to replace people that can even semi produce what they have in probably 4-5 years at the earliest.

I can get on board with dealing Larkin for a Byfield, Fantelli, etc but we need someone showing at least top center potential. Wings are already too far along with next gen young players. If anything we need more people in the Seider/Ray age range. If there is a desperate team out there willing to sell a great young player for a win now thought, then yeah I consider it.

The more I think about it, the less I’m inclined to trade them just for picks. As mentioned, those picks will almost certainty be non-lotto and even top 10 protected and I do not trust Yzerman to draft offensive replacements. Instead he’ll draft a high IQ, high floor, low ceiling two way guy.

The problem is most players aren’t talented enough to be elite both ways. They aren’t drafting Federov, Zetterberg, or a Crosby. Wings also put more emphasis in D and thus neuter some offensive guy’s ability.

If we are building a Boston or St. Louis team, be prepared for disappointment.

Goaltending and players to improve the PK ASAP please! I hope we move on from RAS Compher and Tank.

What's weird about the PK is that in 2024 when the PK was good (79.6%) they had mostly the same guys.

The top PK guys in terms of PK TOI/GP were Seider, Compher, Copp, Chiarot, Ras and Petry. The only significant change was Walman not being a part of it, but I have a hard time believing he was some lynchpin to the whole thing.

This season it was Seider, Chiarot, Compher, Ed, Motte. I do not understand why they'd reduce Ras and Copp's PK time. Ras went from averaging 1:47 on the PK in 2024 to 49 seconds this past season. Copp went from averaging 2:20 to 1:01.

So they dramatically reduced the PK time of two of the better defensive players who aren't exactly known for their offense? I don't get it.

Also I think you will be disappointed in terms of moving those guys. Wings aren't deep enough at center to move Compher. Tank they'll probably hang onto hoping for a rebound year. Ras I am soooo done with but he has 3 more years on his contract. I'm guessing he's staying and if ever gets moved it will be in the last year of his deal.

I like the idea of adding Gavrikov but Im pretty skeptical about overpaying him. Same with Provorov. I feel like these guys are going to get 8M AAV +. Signing a 29 year old, 30 point Dman to an $8M+ x 6 or 7 year contract seems like a disaster waiting to happen.

I don't see a world were Duchene/Tavares leave their respective teams. They seem happy competing for cups where they are at. Helping out a rebuild doesn't seem like what they would want at this point in their career.

I love the idea of Marner and I think Yzerman will go hard after him. I doubt it happens though.

The cap is set to jump by historic amounts the next few years, no? By 2027, the cap will have increased ~30% over 2024 numbers. Chiarot-caliber defensemen will likely be making $6M (Chiarot’s cap percentage in 2022 is equivalent to $6.5M under the projected $113M cap for 2027) and guys like Gavrikov/Provorov will be getting $10M. Presuming Ed signs a Seider-like deal, and Gavrikov/Provorov get similar, that would mean Detroit’s top 3 defenseman are all under market rate for defenseman of their caliber by 2027. Doesn’t seem so scary having a top 3 signed to $25M when the going rate would be $30M+.

Do you want to be like Buffalo or how Edmonton was for years?

A perfect rebuild requires having veterans on the roster too… I would argue that this list is what makes a good rebuild

1) Draft luck and development
2) create a competitive environment for the younger players
3) veteran leadership to show the kids the ropes on what it takes to be a pro and keep them accountable


Trading away Larkin is probably the second worst idea I’ve heard on this forum since those who wanted to lock up Justin Abdelkader and defended that monstrosity of a contract.

The team is on the cusp of finally turning the page and being relevant again. Why trade away the captain who’s a native of the area, good community guy (by the sounds of it) and a fan favourite (except for a couple of you fat sweaty dudes who are totally blowing out of proportion the comments made my Larkin in regards to the TDL).

The senators are ahead of the wings with their rebuild. They acquired a Vézina calibre goaltender. The Habs are not. The Habs went on a Cinderella run and will be brought back to reality by next season. It is disappointing that the Wings did not make the playoffs, but I don’t think they’d be doing any better than both teams mentioned above.

The playoff experience for our young core players can happen next year (and is on pace to happen). The fact that they were still in the race going into the last week of the season is still very good experience.

I’ve said it numerous of times and I’ll say it again. Look at the rookies who finished the year on the Wings. Look at Lucas Raymond. Look at Mo Seider. All had incredible improvements. Look at what we have cooking in GR and overseas. So many kids almost ready to make the next push. The light at the tunnel is finally approaching… and some of you now want to trade Larkin, I think EA sports GM mode really has some of you thinking backwards on how this rebuild is supposed to work.


The real important questions for this team moving forward is not what will Larkin obtain in a trade? But more importantly…
This offseason will be an important one for Yzerman and co. How much will they spend and on who. Will we overpay for a Bennet type of player? Will the player(s) signed align with salary increases from the current core group? Are we trading away some of our picks around the time of the draft for an upgrade? Does Bergren get packaged with our 1st for a young top 6 upgrade?

Anyways we are in for a long off season until some of these key questions will be answered.
