Injury Report: How do YOU fix the Red Wings? 2.0!

We absolutely have to get rid of tank and need to find a taker for Compher.
I don't think we are going to get rid of Tank and I am curious if he has a little better season next year. I wonder if we could flip Compher at like 25% retained with Berggren gets you a decent roster piece. I thought it was interesting in the post-season pressers that Larkin, Copp, Kane and I believe Raymond all listed Ras in the core and leadership group. I would heavily consider moving Ras also for a shot at the room. You buy out Holl and hope for some interest in Gustafsson. Chiarot might have takers with what he has left on his contract and if you can land a Gavirikov or Provorov he is welcome to move on. I think the first three players we can move as forwards maybe with other pieces to get a somewhat good returns.

FA I like:
Marner (but doubt this massively)
Ehlers (probably the best injection I can realistically put into the top 6)
Gavirikov
Provorov

Depth guys:
Tanner Jeannot
Eric Robinson
Trent Fredrick
Dante Fabbro
Ryan Lindgren (get he is more second pairing LD so prefer the first tier, maybe a guy who could play with ASP though given how he clicked with Fox for years)

If you don't land Ehlers, I would start Danielson on the Larkin-Raymond wing. I do expect them to come to terms with Kane. I would prefer Ehlers to Kane and I don't think signing Kane should wipe out that pursuit.

It should be a mix of things and not sure on the returns, but the core is locked in for reasonable stuff, there should be some manuverability here. I think there needs to be substantial change this off-season. I get there is some momentum under McLellan but most of the bottom six and at least two d-man must be rolled out.

If you want to fix the team without blowing it up…

#1: Need a LHD. Immediately. I’d love for Yzerman to pull a rabbit out of his arse trade. But I haven’t heard a single rumor. So I’m going to assume Gavrikov is the best realistic option. And you’re going to have to overpay to get him. And you should.

He’s not perfect. And he might be a 3rd pair D at the end of his contract. But that’s okay. It’s also a good draft to trade up into the mid-1st (ala Cossa/ASP) to draft a top-4 LHD of the future. I really like Aitcheson in this draft.

#1b: Need to find a solid AHL+ RHD to hold the fort until ASP’s ready. Holl and Gustafsson should start the yr in the GR or elsewhere.

Edvinsson—Seider
Gavrikov—Johansson (then ASP)
Chiarot—AHL+ (then Johansson)

That’d ^ be a solid-enough D to make the playoffs. Certainly much, much better than this past yr.

**********

#2: Need to sign Marner and a vet top-6 forward (or two vet top-6 forwards). Marner is of course the dream. We should be the top-bidder. If we get him, great. If we don’t, I’d prefer two vets on short deals (3’ish yrs), given the market. Love Kane, but he’s best as a 3rd line PP specialist at this point.

Tavares, Duchene, Granlund, Nelson, Marchand. Find 2. If it’s just 3yr deals…who cares what it costs.

#2b: Have to find a way to improve the PK. No one on this bottom line can kill penalties. Easiest guy to move for someone will be Ras (maybe package he and Berggren), given Copp/Compher’s contracts. Tank should start the yr in GR or elsewhere.

Tavares?—Larkin—Raymond
DeBrincat—Kasper—Duchene?
Mazur/Soder—Danielson—Kane
Mazur/Soder, Ras+Berg trade?, Copp
Compher

That’s a solid enough group ^

And for those guys to take Detroit's money after they just flushed their roster down the drain, the Wings would need to pay twice what anybody else offered. No thanks.

Is a tank even feasible?

Let's say you trade Larkin, Debrincat, Compher, Copp, Tank and Talbot

Should be able to get 3 firsts and a couple seconds.

But then what, the team is now

Lombardi-Kasper-Raymond
Berggren-Danielson-X
Söderblom-Rasmussen-Mazur
X-X-X

Chiarot-Seider
Edvinsson-Johansson
Gustafsson-Holl

Mrazek
Cossa

I mean, after making the roster, it sure doesn't look too hot. A swift Tank job could be possible, since this could be a bottom-5 team. With the draft capital from the initial trades, alot of great prospects can be had in the first 2 years.

Not saying it should be done, but certainly feasible. I just fear that it could take 5 years, where in which Raymond and Seider will be in the same position as Larkin. And that will essentially doom the team to yet another grim 5 year timeline.

Honestly, Yzerman has put this team in a really really tough spot by going for a semi-decent team too soon. At this point, I'd say that the cards have been dealt and it's up to Yzerman to sink or swim at this point... Better to just go for it.

1. Watch playoffs and cool down.
2. Todd, Yzerman and Larkin get together and discuss what is wrong and should be done.
3. Do something this summer.

missing leadership is Red Wings biggest problem missing Perron and Copp had effect on the team. That's why Yzerman was trying to bring guys like Trouba and Stamkos.

I don't know what I think of Ehlers.

He is obviously a talented player but he has averaged less than 16 minutes including heavy PP deployment for 3 straight seasons. Makes me wonder if he is more of a 3rd line/PP specialist than a true top 6er.

Dude the vets on this team f***ing suck. They’re the only players acting entitled because their contracts make them too hard to move.

Kasper, AlJo, Mazur, Danielson, Lombardi and Soderblom would all have been better than the shit we had playing big minutes the first half.

Look, I know there is a collective narrative on this board. Heck, that narrative may even have some truth to it. But I also know people are good at seeing what they want to see, and I am just questioning it. Not looking to convince anybody, just sharing my doubts. Either way, emphatically restating the narrative doesn't really change much, does it?

Exactly this. We are stuck with them. This is my main gripe with Yzerman he gets a solid F for his FA signings. His drafts are saving his job IMO. I hate literally every guy he signed except Kane...

Here’s a bleak thought; where would Yzerman and Detroit be if they drafted Broberg/Cozens/Zegras in 2019 and Perfetti/Holtz/Drysdale/Quinn in 2020 instead of Seider and Raymond? Scary, right?

I strongly disagree with that, A.

It is, by definition, an idea.

And I’m still waiting for your idea.

Thank you in advance for providing it.
I strongly disagree with that. It is a fantasy where we turn over 1/4 or more of the roster and sign all the over-the-hill vets who were hot shit a decade ago. Nothing else.

A) No. It is trading TWO players at their peak (for four 1st Rd picks) who are going to be well into their decline when we are actual cup contenders in 4yrs.

And then signing the best vets you can, on short non-rebuild-impact deals, to maintain/improve the talent of the team.. make the playoffs.. get the kids playoff experience.. get Yzerman not fired while the 4 new 1sts (6 in the next two drafts) develop.

It’s a very good, commonsensical plan, actually.

“Fantasy” is expecting Larkin and DeBrincat to be top-six players on a SC contender at 34 and 33 when we are ready.

B) Still waiting for Your idea.

Since we’re throwing out things that will never happen, I trade Larkin to Edmonton for McDavid. Then I’ll go sign Marner for league max.

There you go. We all have fantasies!
