It’s been a roller coaster month after finally winning a playoff round, then getting bounced by the Panthers, then Dubas looking like he was coming back only to be fired, or whatever happened there.

How are you feeling about the state of the franchise right now?

We are still in a good spot. Maybe a few more questions with Dubas gone, and the biggest one will be who takes over and whether they can continue to set this team up for success.

If we make the wrong choice with the GM (and also the coach), then things could go bad.

If you take a step back and look at the program with a wider lens, it's still looking good and stable. Whether it's the staff, quality of the team (at least in the regular season), prospects, or the team's financial health.

Yes, Dubas is gone at an odd time but it's just one man. Well, Spezza too but that's not much of a loss.

If the right GM replacement comes in, it will be a smooth transition and everything will continue as required. I mean they could make it as seamless as possible if Pridham becomes the GM but I don't know if Shanny will go in that direction.

As of right now, everything is in good shape. Of course, things could go pear-shaped if the wrong GM is hired and Matthews doesn't re-sign after July 1st.

It really depends on what happens next.

If Leafs ownership and Shanahan make the right hire as GM, I think the team will be fine.

Fine as in, I don’t think they’ll necessarily fall back from where they are and hopefully with some luck the team ends up being a more balanced team capable of going further in the playoffs.

I feel like Shanahan isnot getting enough flack for his own awful decisions, I'd like to see him go over his insane idea of giving Dubas MORE term after his awful first 5 years which were unacceptable not necessarily that I SO disagree with his decisions (apart from letting the 3 rookies own you in terms of contract negotiations), but in terms of results.

Just the notion that you wanted to give Dubas a contract BEFORE we saw what HIS core did in the playoffs is just insane, beyond insane really.

That said in terms of assets this team is going to get monster return for either one or all of Marner, Matthews, Nylander, not only in terms of prospects/players back, but in cap space.

If they do however get buck broken by Matthews, Marner and Nylander and they all stay with massive contracts, I will continue to support them the way I do, sportsnet highlights of games. My expectations of this core are a yearly playoff humiliation ritual.

For me I definitely want to see one of the three go and an explicit effort to get rid of Tavares, short of that I'll know it's the same old Leafs.

Whether it's not getting Sundin help
Whether it's the following 10 years post lockout of not doing a proper rebuild and retooling trash
Whether it's somehow thinking an all rookie cast can get it done and then treating those rookies like Gods when they haven't accomplished f*** all

More continuation of futility and my expectations are not just 0, but negative

In your head
a GM who feels the need to “make his mark” with a big move risks everything.
Risks what exactly? Landing in the same position they did this year, and the year before, and the year before that, and the year before that?

The Leafs have to change something if the intention here is to win at some point and there's risk in every change

As for the OP's question, this team in its current state will never win anything but has a lot of pieces that can be used to turn this team into a winner. Not exactly a hopeless situation to be in.

It's either the turmoil option, or that we have reached our peak. Its one of those two options, but not sure which one.

Going from a consistent playoff team to one that’s on the outside looking in. The division isn’t getting any easier. Also pretty sure we landed in a different spot this year compared to seasons past.

Things are in turmoil, reserving judgment until we see how the summer plays out.

There is too many variables right now so I'll wait and see.

I am hoping when the dust settles that no matter who goes... the guys that are here or have been brought in want to be a Maple Leaf.

I hope the new GM comes in and sets some of these guys straight. A big part of that is getting a coach with a lot more experience and also not bending over to contract demands.

For example... if Matthews is really true to his word and wants to be a Maple Leaf and win... then he knows what he has to do... but will he.... I don't know.

It's a difficult spot in that there's alot of things that need to happen in such a short time frame that whoever comes in is going to need to really come through with a few good moves.

In term's of the actual roster and it's potential, I think it's in a good place if they bring in the right coach, change the culture and make us a more versatile team that can win in numerous ways.

I never liked the way we played. Not so much in that we weren't strong in this area or that area but moreso in how our offense flowed sometimes, the lack of consistent physicality/intensity and how predictable our playstyle could become.

If Matthews commits to staying longterm , I'm actually pretty excited for what we can do with a change of coach and overall vision.

Sadly, there is no depth. Unless Matthews and Marner agree to stay at a reasonable value, or everything comes together next year, we missed our window

No idea right now, I don't know who our GM or coach is.

I don't think it's as worrisome as someone like Matthews leaving because Dubas left, I can't recall a player ever leaving because a GM left.

If a good GM + coach is hired, I think we're still a desirable location to play and we have a good team.

If we make the wrong hires, it could be bad.

Tough to say at this moment, once the GM is in place and we begin to understand the plan we'll have a better idea. It can either go great or horribly wrong

But all in all, right now I'd say we're in a pretty decent position. An elite foundation that requires some tweaking, but you're basically starting at 2nd or 3rd base and figuring out how to drive this thing home

There is no option for wait and see who the GM is but I still don’t believe in the core.

Basically this. Good spot but some crucial signings and moves need to be made soon so I hope we have a GM by Friday upcoming week so we have a continuation with a Good-Great GM.

Just want the cup for the Leafs! If not...it'll be another rebuild.

TBH I feel about the same with or without Dubas at this point in time, just because the Big 3 and the coach have to be sorted out which was the case before he got let go. I had no confidence he was going to resign them for decent deals because that's largely out of a GM's control if the players are going to be money first, and the same applies to his replacement. I have no idea of what the return might be for these guys and again, that isn't in the Leafs control, its the destination clubs that have the hammer.
They just got bounced, their surprise #1 goalie didn't have it in the playoffs, and their prize acquisition this TDL isn't coming back so kind of meh. I am waiting to hear from the new GM to feel any different.
