Speculation: How do the Dallas Stars spend 10 million in cap space?

Sean Shapiro. Former Stars full-time beat reporter, now jointly covers Dallas and Detroit. He's the most trusted source with legit information that the Stars have. I can't stress enough about how rarely he puts names out there. He doesn't fish for interactions.

Here's the clip from his article this afternoon. Again, nothing concrete, just him relaying something that sources told him (which he hardly ever does).

What would they offer to get Malkin.

I guess that's the [ten] million-dollar question. If they're deciding to push their chips all in for the next two years, I would assume Lian Bischel and Mavrik Bourque would not be off the table, along with any and every draft pick.

Hip surgery is 6 months recovery, when you factor the ~6 to 8 week time to get NHL game fitness ready and that's only if everything before it heals well. Sucks for seguin but there's no way he's back for playoffs.

Only way he might be available to play would be an early June return if the Stars make the Cup finals.

Have to assume this is a genuine season ending injury unfortunately.

Think Dallas has to assume he won't return and should add 2 fwds. Ideally a top 6 right wing, then a bottom 6 forward for injury depth.

I wonder if Matt Barzal would be available? Stars have a manageable cap going forward this year and in coming years.

Could Dallas get Barzal from the Isles? Give the isles a 1st round pick and top young player lile Borque or Bischel?

They specifically put a 4-6 month time table on the press release. 4 months from tomorrow and the regular season isn't even over yet. Obviously could take longer, but I think there is some significance in when they decided to do the surgery to be honest.

Not sure why everyone is just assuming Dallas will spend all of Seguin's cap on one player...not like Seguin was their one and only good player.

If they want to spread out the cash, David Savard wouldn't be the worst use of $4M for a team with cup hopes this season. Right handed vet dman who can play top 4 if needed.

Try to forget he's been a Hab for the last 3.25 seasons before crapping on this post.

Where did you see those 3 having Dallas as the favorite?

Friedman was on Vancouver radio and thats who he said becuase of Gagliardi, and ray and dregs podcast dreger made it known, and ferraro responded so does servalli

again that can change, a GM could get the go ahead from an owner any hour of the day to say make a big frigan splash.

potentially last year of their captain in dallas.

Man, hip injuries at that sort of age are usually a death knell for a player's effective career. That's pretty brutal for Seguin and the Stars really. Gonna be tough to replace that, but cap space like that can certainly be pretty powerful at the deadline.

I'm not sure how many big dollar players that are actually "worth it" will be available at the deadline. There are always "bad contracts" up for grabs...but $10M is a big number to fill with actually "good players". That's gonna cost a lot in "assets" if it's even out there.

$10 million in players
Well I threw Seth Jones out there earlier in this thread as a guy I think would actually improve their back end a lot and shore of the Stars RD position. If Hawks retain 1-2 million I think Jones is good value for the stars @ 6 million and I don't think the Hawks require that much coming back in exchange for offloading the majority of his contract.

Don't think the Stars would have to send that much outbound if they are willing to take on guys who have good value but are over paid.
