A Canada B team wouldn't win a game against the top international teams' A rosters.

You sure about that?

Lets say:

Marchand- Crosby- Bergeron
Huberdeau- McDavid - Marner
Hall- Mackinnon- Scheifele
Seguin-RoR- Stone

Reilly- Doughty
Weber- Petro
Letang- Hamilton

Binnington
Price

You’re now left with:

Schwartz- Tavares- Stamkos
Giroux-Barzal- Point
Kane-Horvat- Schenn
Couturier- Monahan- Duchene

Parayko- Burns
Theodore- Ellis
Morrisey- Chabot

Holtby
Fleury

That’s as good as any other team

You can't really answer this without knowing if this mythical best-on-best tourney you speak of comes in 2, 4, 6, 8 or more years from now.

...and if they try cobbling together more young North American stars and Eastern European all stars teams for a World Cup, then it's no longer a best-on-best national teams tournament.

Patty Kane will be 33 by the time the next Olympics come around and as of right now, I would say only him, Matthews, and Eichel are good enough to replace another TC forward. I would give a slight advantage to USA on D and a slight advantage to Canada for goaltending right now but they are basically even in those categories.

An argument could be made that McDavid, Crosby and Mackinnon are the top 3 players in the world right now, and they all belong to one nation. Their depth at F is insane. This is just on paper though, and teams like Finland are usually icing a team without all NHLers and still beating the powerhouse teams like Russian and USA.

This team didn't even medal at the World Championships in 2018. They lost to Switzerland in the medal round and then lost to the US in the bronze game. The Swiss had maybe three legitimate NHL players on their roster.

Michael DiPietro
Curtis McElhinney
Darcy Kuemper

Joel Edmundson
Aaron Ekblad
Ryan Pulock
Darnell Nurse
Ryan Murray
Thomas Chabot
Colton Parayko
Marc–Édouard Vlasic

Jordan Eberle

Josh Bailey
Mathew Barzal
Jaden Schwartz
Pierre-Luc Dubois
Tyson Jost
Jean-Gabriel Pageau
Bo Horvat
Anthony Beauvillier
Ryan O'Reilly
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
Connor McDavid
Kyle Turris

You have hughes and you put him with petry?

Hell, any team can win in the World Cup. Canada, USA, Sweden, Finland and Russia all have rosters that can win any night. It`s all about the chemistry for the top teams. Canada and USA have the edge on offense, Finland has the edge on defensive forwards and Sweden on defence.

FIN:
Laine-Barkov-Rantanen
Teräväinen-Aho-Hintz
Granlund-Haula-Armia
Filppula-Koivu-Kakko

SWE (I know I havent got their spots right):
Nylander-Zibanejad-Olofsson
Lindholm-Pettersson-Karlsson
Forsberg-Bäckström-Nyqvist
Burakovsky-Söderberg-Rakell

CAN:
Marchand-McDavid-MacKinnon
Marner-Crosby-Huberdeau
Stone-Scheifele-Seguin
ROR-Bergeron-Point

Just too many C:s and options for Canada...

USA:
Kane - Eichel - Guentzel
Gaudreau - Matthews - Connor
Pacioretty - Wheeler - Miller
Boeser - Toews -Tkachuk

I feel USA has a much weaker forward-core than I expected.

Russia:
Panarin - Kuznetsov - Ovetchkin
Svechnikov - Malkin - Kucherov
Tarasenko - (KHL) - Dadonov
Radulov - ( KHL ) - Gusev

In forwards:

Canada and Russia are IMO above the rest.

For Finland, I would absolutely replace Granlund and Filppula with Donskoi and Kapanen. And maybe Kakko with Lehkonen (fourth line isn't so much about skill, more about hustle/defence).

Yeah, I actually had them in, but I forgot them when thought about the C:s.

Finland:

Laine-Barkov-Rantanen
TT - Aho - Hintz
Kapanen - Haula - Donskoi
Lehkonen - Koivu - Armia

Kakko, Kotkaniemi, Granlund ( I actually think Granlund is better than weve seen this season, he is just uncomfortable in Nashville)

What’s your point here? They won silver in 2017 and 2019, and gold in 15 and 16, so not sure why you decided to single out a rare year Canada didn’t win to “prove” your point. There’s always upsets every year.

Anyone who doesn’t at least try the line of Marchand-Crosby-Bergeron to start the tournament is wrong with how much they dominated the competition before.

How can it be closer than ever before when USA has already won a best-on-best tournament and did so by defeating Canada in the finals twice in a best of three?

The most talented team doesn't always win. I'm saying that when it comes to overall talent it has never been closer. I think that's indisputable.

On paper it's not even close. I mean Canada has McDavid-MacKinnon-Crosby-Bergeron down the middle.

No they dont. They have McDavid-Crosby-Scheifele-Bergeron down the middle! I WANT to se a McDavid-Mackinnon-X pairing once in my life!

Team USA in WC 1996 had Hull, Chelios, Tkachuk, Modano, Leetch, LaFontaine, LeClair, AMonte, Guerin, Housley, Weight etc. Are you telling me team USA today can field a more talented team than that? In my opinion the gap between Canada and USA has increased. Team USA faced Canada FOUR times that tournament and won THREE times, once in the group stage and twice in the finals. "Doesn't always win" my ***.

There was a bigger disparity in 2010 and the US won
the RR game and lost in OT in the GM game.
The Olympics are one off games so the US is
certainly capable of winning a one off against
Canada.

Legit chance by 2022 Eichel/Matthews are more
impactful than Crosby/Bergeron.

OP wasn't asking about who would win the game, this thread is about talent disparity.

Mackinnon Crosby McDavid and Bergeron ….the 4 best centers in the world on the same team

its not close

Don't forget about Seguin, Tavares, Point, Barzal etc.

If the NHL goes in 2 years, going to be a bloodbath for the 13 forward spots.

Who will be the obligatory random-guy-who-doesnt-really-belong-here pick? I.E. The Brendan Morrow/Chris Kunitz of 2022.

US Top 6 isn't what that guy says it is if its 2022

2022

Tkachuk Eichel Wheeler
Gaudreau Matthews Kreider
Guentzel Larkin Kane
Lee Nelson Tkachuk

Pacioretty

Speed, skill, some grit

On paper it's not even close. I mean Canada has McDavid-MacKinnon-Crosby-Bergeron down the middle.

Eichel/Bergeron is close now. In two years Eichel
is more impactful and you cant assume Crosby
comes back fully. If not Matthews moves into
the discussion.

US absolutely is better than Canada B. Get a grip.
