Tim Kennedy has signed with Luleå in the SHL.

The Swedish league is starting to fill up with former Sabres; Kennedy in Luleå, Danny Paille in Brynäs and Ville Leino in Växjö. It's gonna be interesting to follow those guys.

I thought that kid was going to have a future with Buffalo until Recchi ruined him.

I don't know if anyone saw this a few months ago but my friend just showed it to me. I know a large cross-section of Sabres fans are also Tragically Hip fans (including me), so this is extra cool.

The night Gord Downie swapped Bobby Orr for Derek Roy

Only in the gifted mind of Gord Downie could Derek Roy replace Bobby Orr.

It was the spring of 2007, and the Sabres' two-year run into the hearts and imagination of hockey fans was in full swing. Buffalo and Ottawa were playing in the Eastern Conference final, but May 18 was a rest day. The attention of many locals turned to Erie, Pa.

Legendary Canadian rockers The Tragically Hip had a concert in Warner Theatre. The hall was packed with fans in Sabres gear, and the eclectic lead singer knew it.

During the song "Fireworks," which starts off by detailing a young man's transition from hockey to girls, Downie paid homage to the Sabres. The original lyrics, "You held my hand and we walked home the long way, you were loosening my grip on Bobby Orr," suddenly and shockingly became, "You held my hand and we walked home the long way, you were loosening my grip on Derek Roy."

Kaleta was a fan favorite because he was a hometown boy who skated around like a madman and took wild (and mostly dirty) runs at people... which won him a cult following here and an almost universal hatred everywhere else. Past his skating ability, I argued for years that no contending team has a "kaleta" in their lineup. Was pleased when Murray agreed! Should have moved on from him as an organization years ago. That includes Rochester. :D

he does seem like a high character nice guy off the ice, so Im sure he will have a soft landing somewhere w all his local connections!

He was actually a solid 4th line player, from a hockey sense, for a few years. Once injuries caught up to him, he became useless even in Rochester.

Last Sunday Vyacheslav Kozlov played his farewell game (he retired a year ago, but decided to play this game for charity). A lot of active and former players participated: Ovechkin, Malkin, Kovalchuk, Datsyuk, Afinogenov, Fedorov, Zhamnov, Kamensky, Fetisov, Kasatonov, Morozov, Kalinin, Titov, Zelepukin, Y.Butsayev etc.

Just read that Gaustad is expected to announce his retirement. Despite what some Buffalo reporters have said about his character in the past year, I always thought he was good for the community and seemed like a decent locker room guy. Big part of those good teams coming out of the 04-05 lockout.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions especially on a subject like pat kaleta lol. However I whole heartedly disagree with you as his ability to pk and draw league high rates of penalties from opposing teams was incredibly valuable. He was never a detriment to any 4th line in the league until he became a marked man with officials. Even a 40 game kaleta brought value to those 40 games. That being said there's no doubt his effective nhl days are numbered I'm curious if he has a role within the organization. The depth on rochester is decent this year too so I can't even see a 4th line role there.

I don't think it's any coincidence that Kaleta's career quickly went downhill after Lindy Ruff's departure. He was great at drawing penalties and turned in some solid penalty killing. As a big fan of his play here, I believe partly he could not maintain that level of play, but also that later coaches weren't willing to work with him the way Lindy did.

He was an extremely effective for a short window of time and regularly the most exciting player on the ice when he wasn't dealing with injuries. He really couldn't hack it in Rochester last year, it's a shame. I hope he lands within the organization in some capacity if he wants to.
