Since its a prop for the Streak For The Cash pickem game on the ESPN website, I'm following the Avangard Omsk-CSKA Moscow KHL game this morning.
Currently the score is 1-1 at the end of the first period. Both goal scorers have a connection to former Sabres coach - now current coach of the Dallas Stars - Lindy Ruff.
Derek Roy scored (via the power-play) for Avangard Omsk and of course played for Ruff as a member of the Sabres for many years.
Valeri Nichushkin scored for CSKA Moscow and recently played - well when he wasn't in the doghouse - for Ruff as a member of the Dallas Stars.

Derek Roy KHL Stats - 2016-2017 Season - he has played 16 out of the 22 games for Avangard Osmk.
He has 4 goals (not sure if that includes todays goal) - 2 game winning goals - 5 assists - 20 penalty minutes - 2 plus/minus.
Avangard Osmk is currently in second place in the Eastern Conference of the KHL with a 14-8 record - 38 points - 6 points behind first place AK Bars.

If you want to watch Derek Roy played - Avangard Osmk plays Thursday morning - 9:00 am ET - vs Severstal Cherepovets.
The game is scheduled to be shown LIVE on ONE World Sports here in the United States.
If you don't record the LIVE showing, it will be repeated a few times in the days after with the first repeat being Thursday night - 6:30 pm ET-9:00 pm ET.

BTW - If anyone on here plays the Streak For The Cash pickem game and wants to be in a group with fellow Western New Yorkers/Buffalo Sabres fans - PM me.
I'll then send you the password to the Buffalo Range group that I run. We are always looking for members to join the group.

Update - The score is now 2-2 after the second period. Derek Roy or Valeri Nichushkin weren't involved in their teams second period goals.

Opps! I never posted the final - CSKA Moscow wins 3-2 on a late third period goal. Valeri Nichuskin got one of the assists on the game-winning goal.

LaxSabre - Not a former Sabres player but a former event in Sabres history.

Sean McIndoe - Down Goes Brown - Ranking Every NHL Outdoor Game - Sportsnet.com - October 20, 2016.

#1 - January 1, 2008 – Penguins 2, Sabres 1 - Ralph Wilson Stadium - Orchard Park, New York -

It wasn't the best matchup in outdoor game history, or even the best game. And the venue, while impressive, couldn't compete with some of those that would come after it.
But there was something about the first-ever Winter Classic that just clicked - end result was a game that still serves as the archetype of what an outdoor game should be.

Everything just seemed to work, from the vintage throwback uniforms to the light snowfall that gave the whole thing an almost impossibly made-for-TV look.
The game itself was low-scoring but entertaining - ending in a moment right out of the league's marketing handbook - Sidney Crosby scoring the winning goal in a shootout.

The league went into the day wondering if outdoor games could become a regular event - by the end of it, they had no choice.

While it wasn't the first outdoor game in league history, this was the one that locked the games in as an indelible part of the modern NHL experience.
For better or worse, every outdoor game that followed owes its existence to a snowy afternoon in Buffalo.

Iowa Wild General Manager Brent Flahr on Thursday announced the AHL club has signed defenseman Mike Weber to a professional tryout agreement (PTO).

Weber, 28 (12/16/87), is a veteran of 351 games in the NHL, having spent the bulk of his time with the Buffalo Sabres.
The 6-foot-2, 217-pounder played in 45 NHL games last season, suiting up in 35 games for Buffalo and 10 games for the Washington Capitals.
In 45 games, Weber scored 1 goal and totaled 5 points, to go along with 60 penalty minutes.
For his NHL career, the Pittsburgh, PA native has 9 goals and 44 assists for 53 points in 351 NHL games.
The 10th year pro has also played in 181 AHL games between the Rochester Americans and the Portland Pirates.
Over that span, the blueliner has 7 goals and 36 assists for 43 points, to go along with 425 penalty minutes.

Bruce Garrioch - @SunGarrioch - Sens put Varone on waivers before heading West.

The Senators lightened their load before heading to western Canada. Winger Phil Varone - who suited up for only his third game of the season - Saturday’s 4-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning at home - was put on waivers Sunday at noon. If he clears he’ll be sent to Binghamton on Monday. Varone, who was brought to the Ottawa organization in a trade with Buffalo last season, played only seven minutes in the loss to the Lightning.

Varone didn’t accompany the Senators when they left Sunday afternoon for Vancouver. The club is scheduled to practice at 2:00 pm ET Monday and there’s no word if the decision to send Varone down means they’ll call up forward Curtis Lazar, who missed most of training camp with mono.

Update - Varone cleared waivers - ‏@SenatorsAHL - Senators assign Phil Varone to Binghamton.
(B-Sens host his former AHL team - Rochester Americans - on Saturday, November 5.)

Re: Weber - Minnesota doesn't carry a 4th LHD, and I don't know the quality of their AHL/Iowa lefties.

I wonder if Weber or Murray approached the other?

I'd like to believe Weber, if with the Amerks, would slot as high or higher than Justin Falk, and be a callup if there was BUF injury on the left side. Brady Austin's never gonna see the NHL. I don't know anything about Geiger or Bennett.

I'd think he'd be a good fit in Rochester, not knowing the max vet # situtation.
