they also mentioned that Boston might be interested in Kovalchuk and that the Kings might have to retain up to 20%-25% for a trade to work

If the Canes aren't going to resign Ferland then, unless the market is better for him, Brown + 2nd is a good return for a rental like him imo.

Brown is a smart 2 way player capable of 10-20 goals. He's been bounced around the last 2 years between lines and perhaps its affected his point totals. He's good at everything...but not great at anything, his IQ is what stands out.

I see him as a 3rd RW instead of a "Bottom 6" guy as Toronto is loaded at RW. I'll be sad to see him go but thats sports for ya...

If the Leafs 2020 1st, Liljegren, Sandin and Kapanen are truly off the table, who do they have to trade? I am not trying to be snarky, I truly don't understand. Bracco and a 2nd isn't going to get them very much.
Which is why its unlikely they'll add anyone significant.

Ditto for us with Tolvanen (and Fabbro). How often does that caliber of prospect get moved at the deadline anyway?

Rarely if ever. Even some of the best rentals rarely get a 1st and one of those guys. Teams are likely kicking tires but if all the guys that could be on the market end up being on the market it will 100% be a buyers deadline. Some guys might start a bidding war but I see a lot of teams standing firm on their offers and teams having to take the best one or lose their guy for nothing.

Who are the physical forward rentals; Ferland, Simmonds, Brendan Lemeiux (RFA), Sam Bennett (RFA), Brett Ritchie, Michael Raffl?, Brandon Tanev, Pat Maroon, and/or Colin Wilson

Since the 1st, Sandin, and Liljegren are off the table, obviously Simmonds and Ferland won’t be going to TOR. You can also take Sam Bennett off the list.

I could see TOR maybe targeting Raffl or Tanev. Since no good pieces would be moving, they’d be low cost targets who are UFA.

What da hell is that list ? Lemieux and Bennett are 22 year old and guess who also needs young physical forward ? Winnipeg and Calgary

Raffl, Colin Wilson, Tanev ? Really ? I bet Tom Wilson is making nightmares thinking about these 3.

If Simmonds and Ferland are out of the Leafs price range....I can see Nick Ritchie being be a low-key target in terms of the "Power Forward" type of player the leafs are looking for.

He fits the Age group of the Leafs too. Salary is reasonable. Just a thought

All expiring deals... the two RFA are just some I added to the list because the “need a physical forward” is pretty general.

If the plan is to shape part of your roster to “handle Tom Wilson” you’ve already lost that series lol. Surprised teams and fans are that scared of him.

As long as the price is reasonable, I could see him being expensive.

He would be ok. Had a horrible game against us, but. He is ok.

Johnsson has as many points as Ferland this year. They're tied in goals too. One is a UFA, the other is an RFA rookie. Tell us why we're adding here?
Toughness/grit, you know the whole reason the Leafs are looking at Ferland in the first place. But why use logic when you can just look at numbers on a spread sheet.

Because it’s the TML and we always have to overpay to get players and all our guys are overrated hot garbage. Furthermore every player we have who is up for contract will be Offer Sheeted....
Lastly because they play in Toronto they must be paid 2-3x the going rate.

I will say this Dubas didn’t do much to help the last point with the Matthews contract. I haven’t seen a single Rantanen or Tkachuk offer sheet thread on these boards yet Marner is gonna be the biggest target. Rantanen had 84 points last year and will likely have close too or more than 100 this year but nobody wants a 6”4 RW who just turned 21.......

Lol, as if toughness and grit even begin to make up the difference in contract value between the two. Why think logically when you can just point out some nonsense that makes my guy worth less? Zaitsev is the Leafs leader in hits this year, you think that makes one iota of difference to anyone?

20 goal RW scorer on a great contract.

Canes are known as cheapskates.

Brown hasn't played any better this year than McGinn, Martinook, Maenalanen, McKegg, Foegele, or Wallmark. Guys who have worked hard and earned their spot as the team has heated up. And every one of them currently makes less than $2.1 million for a 4th liner.

Canes would rather keep Ferland as an own rental than trade him for a 25 year old 4th line winger with 5 goals.

Ferland for Johnsson + 3rd is something the Canes might consider.

Like they did with Skinner? Excellent trade. The Canes have made some bonehead moves in the last year, it wouldn't surprise me if they made more.

You're being ridiculous if you even think about getting Johnsson for Ferland. The Leafs said no to something around Johnsson and Pesce, why would they deal him for an overrated rental lol

Skinner had a Full NMC and would accept trades to 2 destinations. This is really dumb comparison to bring up when talking about a rental with no trade protection.

Rod Brind'Amour had coached Skinner for 7 straight years and he forced the Canes to trade him off the team to one of his 2 acceptable destinations for whatever they could get. It is what it is. What is for certain is that it has as much bearing on this deal as the "Rask for Nino" swap.

It's been reported that teams are shying away from dealing 1st rounders for rentals (not just TO), so 2nd+2nd/prospect is probably going rate.
