Ferland's game reminds me of Clarkson.

He's fine as a rental, I'd be wary of signing him long term

Who knows whether they plan to keep him or not. As a non Hurricane fan that lives in NC, I can tell you that a lot of players just love a job on that team. I have seen nothing to indicate Ferland doesn't want to stay. I have only seen questions as to whether Carolina thinks he is worth the money and term it will require to keep him. It may be they like the risk of losing him for nothing rather than the risk of trading him for nothing.

Yeah your right, they may just decide to roll with him instead and lose him in summer just to make the playoff push. I guess it'll depend where there team is at come deadline time

He is a top-player in context of what he would bring to a contender. Regardless you're not getting good pick ups by offering cap dumps and a draft pick. Unless the recieving GM wants to be the next chiarelli.
There is a fairly large area between "cap dump" and expecting a player like Johnsson for Ferland.

It’s funny you say that because reading Leaf threads we were constantly told our prospects sucked besides Lily and Sandin and without trading one of them along with a high pick we had no shot at a top 4 defenceman.

Like clockwork on HF when the Muzzin deal happened, Grundy and Durzi were now top prospects all of a sudden. The reality is if Bracco or any other prospect gets dealt before the deadline it will happen again...when Leaf players get traded their HF value goes up. People trashed Phil Kessel for years as a one dimensional disaster, since he joined the Penguins, you hear nothing of the sort.

Grundström would have been the kind of spec I think Carolina would have been interested in if we end up making a Faulk for futures deal. I got the impression that Faulk is of no interest to the Leafs even for a "futures" price that left the NHL roster and the blue-chip specs intact.

The Canes preference is to make a hockey trade with our RHD depth and Pesce/Hamilton are only available for immediate help. Unfortunately, these seem to be the only Canes RHD that interest Dubas and he's only willing to make the kind of futures offer we'd only accept for Faulk.

A futures package like the one TML traded for Muzzin and the Canes would accept for Faulk or Ferland...wouldn't be acceptable to the Canes for Pesce or Hamilton. The Muzzin deal was a better deal for what the Leafs were looking to do tradewise.

Yeah but trading him for a UFA with a career high of 41 points that we can't re-sign is totally a fair deal...hell we have to add. If everyone else wants to continually sleep on the kid that's cool....don't think Dubas is though.

As long as the price is reasonable, I could see him being expensive.

Well considering the Ducks are free falling right now, I dont think they necessarily have Ritchie as an "Untouchable".

As long the return is fair. I would think they would be looking for some speed and skill to transition from being a big/slow team

I don't love Ferland but if the major piece coming back is Connor Brown you keep Ferland. Brown is a small slow W whose production is average to below average for a third line player. Ferland has been the more productive player over his career and has a physical element teams want, why would you trade him for a smaller less physical player who's less productive?

Because it’s the TML and we always have to overpay to get players and all our guys are overrated hot garbage. Furthermore every player we have who is up for contract will be Offer Sheeted....
Lastly because they play in Toronto they must be paid 2-3x the going rate.

I will say this Dubas didn’t do much to help the last point with the Matthews contract. I haven’t seen a single Rantanen or Tkachuk offer sheet thread on these boards yet Marner is gonna be the biggest target. Rantanen had 84 points last year and will likely have close too or more than 100 this year but nobody wants a 6”4 RW who just turned 21.......

Everyone expects Rantanen to re-sign with Colorado.
Why would they lowball him?
Cap situation is different with them mainly because they have the best bargain in Nate and Landeskog.
They don't have the wealth of talent that Toronto has. Brayden Point and Marner would definetly be the two main guys to target for offersheets.

Ferland: 296 games, 117 points

Brown: 225 games, 89 points

So the difference is 28 points in 71 games...you really think Brown couldn’t hit that?. Ferland has also seen much more time in a top 6 role. Your last statement is just plain wrong

You can certainly make the case that Muzzon and Pesce are near equals as defenceman.

Do you think Rant actually cares? I am pretty sure him and his agent will ask for what they want, and I am also pretty sure it won't be under 7m lol
