Can you clarify?

Are you saying:

1. A non-playoff team will trade their 1st and a top 10 prospect

or

1. A playoff team won't trade a 1st, later pick, and a prospect that isn't recently from the 1st round?
I bet $100 a playoff team will not trade a 1st, late pick + ok prospect.

The whole idea of Horvat to the Sabres is worrisome. Horvats having a career year and needs a contract and if Buffalo trades for him, they're going to be obligated to sign him. I just don't want to see Buffalo give some albatross nine or ten million dollar contract to Horvat until he's 35 who's probably going to be a fifty point 2c.

nobody will….thst boat has sailed with him entering his final year.

the best return would be a 1st likely 22-32 range of the draft and a B prospect.

this draft, many teams aren’t moving their 1st round pick…especially those that have given up picks in prior or last drafts.

more likely return will be something like

2nd+3rd+ B prospect. 2nd becomes a 1st if team makes the conference finals)
That’s less than what Andrew Copp returned last deadline. Horvat is much better than Copp and currently 2nd in the league in goal scoring. He’s returning a 1st or equivalent prospect minimum.

look around thr league…how many teams have traded their 1st or their2nd in 23 or have bern trading quite a bit of high picks in prior drafts or future drafts.

also this year, unlike last year, you should see a packed group of playoff teams battling for a playoff spot. Those bubble teams aren’t giving up a 1st in any dealwithout significant restrictions

then there is the cap…remember that…rangers last year had space to do such a trade. Given Horvat salary, and actual owed salary. Having to use a pass thru team will affect the return where instead of a 1st it’s a 2nd and 3rd do thr middle team gets the 3rd to retain. $500K in actual pay by middle team=2nd round pick in pass thru

Obviously teams are going to be more leery of trading their 1st’s an entire season before the draft. But at the deadline, any team trading their 1st is going to be pretty certain it won’t be a lottery pick.

Or the Canucks can retain or take back a contract. Horvat, with his production and age, it’s likely whatever team that trades for him is doing so to keep him longterm.

Not the right team to trade, Buffalo is not competing not sure why they would add a rental. Should easily get a 1st from contender

Picks can't be conditional on signings, so that 2nd doesn't work.

Honest question I have regarding CBA. If Johnson walks as a free agent, Buffalo gets a compensatory 2nd round pick, if he is traded and then walks does the acquiring team actually get the same compensation?

Yes. The Canucks actually did this with Patrick White in the Ehrhoff trade with San Jose. Basically traded him as a 1st round pick that nobody was going to sign, as effectively a "2nd round compensatory pick".

No they won’t. No any GM will do that for a rental

he does not have that value. Then look at the teams cap structure and future contracts.
It's literally done that way or similar every year with different players, but ok then.......

Well he said 1st and another conditional 1st, and mid tier prospect, that has absolutely happened

one 1st, one CONDITIONAL 1st and a mid tier prospect, is that really a lot?

not under current rules where the comp pick was tied to a UFA resigning. You can’t do that anymore. His price st deadline is just for a rental.
