Brunson just took a 113M$ discount to resign with the New York Knicks. What are some examples of big discounts players have taken in the NHL?
It more detailed than that given opt outs and such. Closer to like $37 mill over 3 years which gets him 10 nba seasons. Which then carries other benefits. But still a sizeable difference at the moment.

Kariya signed with the Avalanche for $1.2M for one year in order to play with Selanne. He'd been making $10M with the Mighty Ducks the year before.

Fun fact: neither Anaheim nor Colorado fans like remembering this.

But how is that a home team discount though? One went chasing a cup, the other followed (ultimately in the same pursuit....and wanting to play with his pal)

Also, way different stages of careers, Kariya wanted a cup before retiring, Bunson is young.

Probably Kariya doesn't like remembering it either

That was more to help him get to free agency quicker. Under the CBA at the time, if a veteran player signed for less than the league average salary, he would become a free agent once the contract was up. Of course that didn't really work for Kariya, as his year with Colorado was rather forgettable and the lockout ruined any further momentum he could have built.

This reminds me of when Glencross regretted taking a hometown discount to stay with the Flames

Players do this, specifically to have a better chance to win. I think Slavin qualifies as that. Also McDavid famously rejected an Oilers contract offer because it was too high an AAV

biggest paycut in NHL history

for ducks fans, it stung like hell at the time and for a while after, but winning a cup got rid of that. and if kariya had stayed, they probably wouldn't have won it all anyways

This was to exploit an old loophole that would make him a UFA because he would be making less than league average after 10 seasons played.

Doesn't exist. Only tax discounts exist.
You can't admit it makes a difference even though Barry Trotz came out and admitted it does, eh?

If you don't believe it, then why believe anything you get from this site. It was reported by multiple sources
It was reported by multiple sources because both Connor's financial team and the Oilers agreed to say it publicly. There is a very real possibility that this "could have asked for more" gem came from the Oilers communications department as a way to combat any criticism that might have come up over signing McDavid to the highest AAV in hockey. Criticism that would have been silly, in my opinion.
