Not sure why people are already assuming this is a rental. I think we'll be able to extend him. This front office has all along talked about highly valuing goal scorers, well guess what that's exactly what Guentzel is and he's one of the best in the business at it.

Tied for 11th in goals per game since 2018-19 when he broke out and just .01 behind 9th place Kucherov. Aho is 17th, next highest Cane is Svech at 77th. We've talked about needing goal scoring for years, well here it is.
Taking a look at CapFriendly for next season, retaining Guentzel, Necas and Jarvis while also icing a competent blueline seems very tricky. I don’t envy the front office this summer, they have a ton of tough choices to
make.

It was said that Guentzel wants to test the market no matter what. Of course that may change but there’s no reason to assume we can get him signed. Or that we’d want him signed on what it would take to change his plans.

Necas is gone
I think Necas is gone only if we can land a higher impact player, like EP, in a trade, which isn't guaranteed.

I’m one of those fans that hope we don’t get rid of him, he is truly the only dynamic player on the team and I think he is still a player that can reach that superstar level we need.

All this “insider” info about Necas and the “situation” around him is truly speculation, and we just saw how little these guys actually know. I miss McKenzie…

Or potentially a basement team wants to "forward the clock" and give us a recent high draft pick for Necas. The best example of a possible team that could do that is the Coyotes. Barrett Hayton is having a down year offensively but had 43 points the year prior. I doubt they'd deal Logan Cooley or Dylan Guenther but I suppose it's possible. Necas's value is probably between a Cooley and a Hayton.

Either way, not having Bunting basically allocates $4.5M of potential cap space towards Guentzel or Skjei re-signing. From what I understand, both could project decently well into their 30s.

But yeah, as it stands today, even without Bunting, we probably can't re-sign Skjei, Guentzel, Necas, and Jarvis, unless we give Jarvis a 2 year bridge and 1 year delay for Necas. That would be totally unpalatable.

At least you can no longer say “we don’t do rentals” and the like. Never say never with this team. Tendencies are not rules. Maybe not Guentzel, but a 30(+) long-term contract is coming at some point.
For me this is one of the positives of this trade, I’m sick of this narrative from the media and half of the fan base. This team is most likely going to look a lot different next year, this is best time to yolo, and prob why the borg is breaking their principles.

I'm of the mind that Koivunen is the best player in the deal from the Canes....long term. His skating has already improved markedly and he's got Aho-esque offensive instincts. I also think that Lucius has potential, but he's still baking.

You know who would be perfect to center Svech and Necas?

Lindholm. Make it so. Edit: Literally as I finish typing this we get Kuzy. What is this world we’re living in?

Also Buchnevich only for the fact that in beating the drum for him, I had to learn to spell his name.

While you may be right about the odds of Carolina extending, I don’t think he’s going back to Pittsburgh.

I think he’s going to market for a top dollar deal with a cup contender. That could be Carolina if they want, but I don't think it's Pittsburgh anymore.
Pens in theory could probably offer Jake about 9 million with some other contracts coming off the books over the summer but I dont see why Jake would even want to come back. The team is obviously entering full on rebuild in a year so the short term future looks very grim.

Kuznetsov at 2 yr / 3.9m AAV for a fourth round pick is just good business all around. I'm sure Washington is happy. I'm happy to have another guy competing for 2C -- especially a veteran with playoff pedigree. If he sucks, he sucks. Not a big deal. Maybe playing for a playoff team will rejuvenate him a bit.

Or... They walk Skjei and run Orlov-Chatfield as the 2nd pair. That's the easiest answer.

So what are we looking at now?

Guentzel-Aho-Svech
Necas-Kuzy-Turbo
Martinook-Staal-Jarvis
Noesen-Drury/KK-Fast

Slavin-Burns
Skjei-Pesce
Orlov-Chatfield

Freddie
Kooch

Is that basically what we're looking at for the playoffs?
I shall retort with:

Guentzel-Aho-TT
Svech-Kuzy-Necas
Marty-Stone hands-Jarvis
Noesen-Drury-Fast

Sorry Kk, that’s the best lineup. A bit obvious but it has to be tried imo, before you remix in the blender. TT doesn’t really fit well anywhere else imo.
