We need a money line on him going back to Pit.

+2500 odds on canes re-signing or extending lol
While you may be right about the odds of Carolina extending, I don’t think he’s going back to Pittsburgh.

I think he’s going to market for a top dollar deal with a cup contender. That could be Carolina if they want, but I don't think it's Pittsburgh anymore.

So Jake is a LW, is that right? So he bumps Svech down?

Guentz Aho Turbo
Svech KK/Drury Necas

That's a pretty good top 6.
Guentz - Aho - Svech
Necas - KK/Drury - Turbo
Martinook - Staal - Jarvis
Noesen - KK/Drury - Fast

Our top 6 is loaded, and we have the cap space to make another move to further boost it if needed.

Turn up the GAS, boys!

Hell no. There’s no spot for Pono to play centre for Carolina wasn’t gonna workout. Morrow is a way better prospect then those 2
yup. drury has locked down one of the center spots for the foreseeable future. Look at usage and ice time. RBA loves him. Pono and Suzuki are/were blocked form making the roster, absent a center leaving via trade.

I'd say there's maybe a 45% chance he signs in Pittsburgh. It's an incredibly cushy place to play; more country club than hockey club when you're a vested member. We could sign him to a nice deal to cover the end of the Crosby/Malkin/Letang years and then promise to deal him wherever he wants. He's not going to get the most money here, but he will get the most peace of mind.

At least you can no longer say “we don’t do rentals” and the like. Never say never with this team. Tendencies are not rules. Maybe not Guentzel, but a 30(+) long-term contract is coming at some point.
Honestly, we were all in on Meier last year and thought we had him. The whole notion that we don't do rentals ignores the fact that we absolutely will do them, we just aren't willing to pay stupid prices for them. The offer we had to SJ last year was fair, probably better than what they ended up getting, but their GM decided to do his old team a favor and took the lesser haul. Last night, same situation presented itself and this time around Dubas took it.

I do believe we will be aggressive in trying to extend him. He's a perfect fit for what we want to do, and potentially would allow us to shop Necas a bit if we think we can have a bigger deal in the summer.

Congrats Canes fans. As I'm sure you've already heard, you're going to love Jake. His hockey IQ is off the charts offensively and he will be amazing with Aho. He is always in the right place and doesn't mind the dirty areas.

Since I'm a local, can I jump on the bandwagon for these playoffs? :)

I assumed one of the young C would move in this deal because there's a logjam.

Aho, KK, Staal are all signed long-term. Drury has played well this year. Ponomarev and Suzuki are languishing in the minors as a result. If Pono had not been hurt in the pre-season, it might be Drury in this deal.

Carolina has a history of dealing off young C in these deals and having them perform well elsewhere. Nicolas Roy in Vegas, Eetu Luostarinen in Florida. I think that's a reasonable projection for Pono.

Also, unlike Blake and Morrow, both Pono and Koivunen are already signed. That sounds like a minor issue to us, but a player finishing his junior year like Morrow is a risk of walking to college UFA.
I would've rather send out Kotkaniemi. He's been playing 4c anyway and just give Pono a shot and used the 4m in cap savings.

I don't think they are ready to give up on Kotkaniemi yet.

And I don't think Dubas wanted Kotkaniemi anyway. Bunting was one of Dubas's former players and should mesh well with Crosby on the top line and on the PP.

Finally, if push comes to shove and Carolina needs the cap space or gives up on him, they don't need to pay someone to take Kotkaniemi. They just buy him out in June of 2024, 2025, or 2026 and the buyout is only $850K a year in both cash and cap hit.

Tbh KK has more upside then Pono and his deal isn’t terrible
Pono costs 4m less for what would probably have been similar on ice results.

I've never been called a patient person but I've lost hope for coconut. He looks no better than when he arrived. He looks like a poor man's Victor Rask.

Y’all should be even more fun to watch now with Guentz.

has there been any word on when he’ll make his debut? I believe I read somewhere he can’t be activated until the 10th, so hopefully he’ll debut Sunday.

Meier wasn’t a rental, and honestly THIS was a borderline stupid price to pay for a rental.

Donnie is going to look like a doofus if they end up not being able to sign their NCAA guys like Morrow or Blake, and Guentzel goes right back to Pitt. I was thinking maybe we were hearing those guys names in the rumors because there was smoke about them not signing here.

We know how hard it is for players to adjust to our man-to-man system, Guentzel is coming off an injury, and he isn’t known for stellar defense. He has a non-zero chance of being a meh player for us down the stretch.

Not sure why people are already assuming this is a rental. I think we'll be able to extend him. This front office has all along talked about highly valuing goal scorers, well guess what that's exactly what Guentzel is and he's one of the best in the business at it.

Tied for 11th in goals per game since 2018-19 when he broke out and just .01 behind 9th place Kucherov. Aho is 17th, next highest Cane is Svech at 77th. We've talked about needing goal scoring for years, well here it is.

I mean through the end of the year. I thought maybe we'd trade him to a west coast team that needed D for a forwrd

Only if you don't wear a pens jersey in the PNC.

Pens, rags, and Bruins jerseys are PNG in the PNC
I have worn a Pens jersey to the PNC but only when they are playing the Pens. I have a red turtleneck that I got just for Canes games when they aren't playing the Pens.

If Guentzel signs here, I will buy a Canes Guentzel jersey to wear to games. I like him that much.
