Pono is likely a bottom 6 ceiling center. Good motor and plays all situations well. The question is can he maintain that motor over 82 games in the league to remain consistent. Can play now.

Koivunen has top 6 offensive talents and can play any of the 3 O positions. His only problem is his skating isn’t nhl average. It was worse last year and he made good improvements. He is going to need another offseason of skating work. Could play next season.

Lucius has some cooking left. He is a project but maybe he makes the jump having an older brother giving him tips.
Appreciate it, thanks for the insight! I was hoping for one of the more lower risk prospects but I get the need for us to pick up multiple prospects because we literally have like maybe 2 that will even sniff the NHL.

Pono needs to be called up ASAP because the current bottom 6 is laughable

Have to think that pesce stays now. Tda might get claimed. Guess smith is insurance there. We still have like what, 8m in cap?

Don't think we can afford to give up many more pieces, unless its a hockey trade involving orlov or kk, since tda was waived ad well as raanta.
Cap is down to $5.88M now with Guentzel added, as he's listed as IR on CapFriendly and not LTIR like he was in PIT. But that is with Lemieux, TDA, and Raanta still on the roster until they are claimed or sent down (if they are even sent down.)

If all 3 are sent down to make space, they could have $3.1M in cap space ($1.15M for TDA, $1.15M for Raanta, $800K for Lemieux.) If another deal materializes, they have the cap space to go for it.

I assumed one of the young C would move in this deal because there's a logjam.

Aho, KK, Staal are all signed long-term. Drury has played well this year. Ponomarev and Suzuki are languishing in the minors as a result. If Pono had not been hurt in the pre-season, it might be Drury in this deal.

Carolina has a history of dealing off young C in these deals and having them perform well elsewhere. Nicolas Roy in Vegas, Eetu Luostarinen in Florida. I think that's a reasonable projection for Pono.

Also, unlike Blake and Morrow, both Pono and Koivunen are already signed. That sounds like a minor issue to us, but a player finishing his junior year like Morrow is a risk of walking to college UFA.

One positive for CAR’s upcoming contract situation will then be need for cheap young talent. They’ll almost certainly have at least RD slot open next year going into UFA. Hopefully Morrow sees that opportunity as a positive to get signed in the coming weeks.

You won’t be disappointed with pono. He will go through scoring streaks but his 200 effort is there

Congrats Canes fans. As I'm sure you've already heard, you're going to love Jake. His hockey IQ is off the charts offensively and he will be amazing with Aho. He is always in the right place and doesn't mind the dirty areas.

Since I'm a local, can I jump on the bandwagon for these playoffs? :)

2) both Pono and Koivunen received votes in the top 5 in our current poll. You can go into the individual threads for them. I had both of them in my top 5. You’re underselling them. Pono is the closest out of all of them to actually making the Canes, and Koivunen has accomplished the most out of the forward group imo. He made the WJC’s twice and is nearly a ppg in Finland. Our current list will be very interesting to look back at in five years.

I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a better overall return for a rental. My mind is blown that people are disappointed. We overpaid. We had the capitol do so, but there’s no doubt we did.

Agreed I’d place both Pono & Koivunen as late 1st pick values. My brain is like dang Pitt got a conditional 1st, 2 prospects that could be valued as a 1st rounder, and Bunting. That’s a big package for a rental.

What makes you say that? I thought he was as good as gone already and we kept Morrow in this deal who is our best rd prospect.
I mean through the end of the year. I thought maybe we'd trade him to a west coast team that needed D for a forwrd

Only if you don't wear a pens jersey in the PNC.

Pens, rags, and Bruins jerseys are PNG in the PNC

Can any Canes fan give a summary of the 3 prospects and their potential ceiling?
If any of them become a superstar in this league. We’re probably talking $10M+ per year. Which gets them a 3 story mansion. With ceiling heights that could exceed 25ft

Some of them might be minor league plugs. So we’re talking apartment life and 9ft ceilings for life.

A 9ft ceiling in an apartment is a fancy ass apartment

As you probably have learned, Jake was loved in Pittsburgh. Glad he went to Carolina, he'll mesh with your excellent team well. His D isn't the best, but his hockey brain, soft mits and fearlessness are world class. All the best gents. Give him the love he deserves.

Pono is basically Jack Drury 2.0 - solid middle 6 C, most likely a #3 but you'll not going to have any issues with him being that guy. Doesn't do anything exceptionally well but does everything well. He was ready to be that guy at the start of the season and the biggest reason he didn't get that shot is that we have Drury, Staal, and Kotkaniemi already.

Lucius is a bit more of a work in progress but he's been the best player on Wisconsin the past 2 years. Last year they weren't so hot but they're having a solid season this year and he's still the guy driving play for them when he's on the ice. Probably a playmaking 3rd line winger that can move up in the lineup as needed.

Koivunen is the big boom-bust play here. His skating needs work, has needed work from day 1. But his offensive instincts and skillset are outstanding. If your skating coaches can get that next level of skating out of him he's a guy that can be a solid second liner if not be a complimentary first liner in the right situation.

Pens fan here trying to explain the view from over there of disappointment.

1) How good can Bunting be when he's a -15 on a playoff bound Canes team? Also, there's the feeling that Dubas sacrificed prospect value just to get one of his ex-Soo pet rocks back. We are also stuck with him for the future. I'd rather have the cap space back.
2) We're smarting that we couldn't even land one of your top 5 in a deal, although my friend who's a Canes fan thinks that the gap between prospects 4-7 for you guys is more of a matter of opinion than hard science. I personally would have preferred quality over quantity.
3) Having watched Jim Rutherford cook, there's also the feeling that Dubas should have tried to wait him out and get an overpay from the Canucks. Uncle Jimmy spends like a drunken sailor when he wants something, and we're all pretty sure he wanted Jake badly.
and strangely.....
4) I know it sounds strange, but lot of us are Pirates fans as well, and "quantity over quality" has never worked out in baseball, so it's a very loaded term in some senses. It's practically a swear phrase.

I would have rather given you Morrow than both Pono and Koivunin. I think you got two future NHLers there and who knows about the picks. For a rental, even one as good as Jake, that should be pretty good.

Hell no. There’s no spot for Pono to play centre for Carolina wasn’t gonna workout. Morrow is a way better prospect then those 2
