2015 Upper Deck Hockey Cards | PSA Population

You are correct, I had the wrong year.

2,790 PSA 10 Jagr OPC vs. 2035 PSA 10 McDavid Young Guns

Have you had a lot of success convincing people that collect PSA 10s that a BGS 9.5 should be a similar price? I usually find the value to be about 30-40% as both a seller and a buyer.

A cursory glance at eBay shows that McDavid BGS 9.5s are selling for $1600 while PSA 10s are $3500-4000.

No. The game is over for BGS. They used to be about the same price especially in hockey.
Actually almost no one used PSA for modern hockey till the last few years.

All those BGS 9.5's will be cracked out at some point and sent to PSA.

A little off topic but does anyone have an opinion on o pee chee baseball cards?

Yes, the 80s OPC and Leaf cards of major stars and RCs are fire and even more so with high PSA grades.

BBCE certified sealed product is worth a ton, usually much more than the American counterpart.

This is part of the PSA phenomena.

I agree with this and not only 9.5s but the 8.5s and 9s of top RCs too. If you crack a 9.5, you want PSA 10, which is worth more. If you crack a 9, especially one graded in the 00s, you want a PSA 9, which is also worth more.

That's because it was never worth grading 90's cards so the Pop is low for a reason
It will be huge when PSA is finished with them.
There's millions of Forsberg rcs and even if they gem 10% of the time that would make it 100k pop.

Plus no one cares about Forsberg at this time.

Draisaitl will pass Forsberg easily because Forsberg is a bad example of a player who had a short career in the worst scoring era.

Forsberg 249 goals 885 points
Draisaitl 192 goals 495 points and he's 25

Forsberg numbers will be crushed.

Selanne is way more iconic and he has better numbers/records

Yeah but this is hockey. Points overall are only a secondary criteria. Cups are more important for top players. That’s why Dale Hawerchuk sells for little while Rod Brind’Amour RC PSA 10s sell well.

We’ll see if Draisaitl will win even one Cup let alone two and play a significant role doing so.

And it’s interesting you bring up Selanne...who has the exact same RC in the exact same set as Forsberg, solo RC in 91-92 UD low numbers...Forsberg PSA 10 seems to routinely go for $15 to $20 more than the Selanne PSA 10.

A little more on this topic. If someone came up to me and had a 5000 count box of various OPC baseball cards, pack fresh but just commons and stars, no RCs, I would still be VERY interested (if they were local...I'm not paying shipping from Canada). Why? Because 80s baseball collectors have a branch of guys who do PSA set registry for entire sets, including trying to hit PSA 10 on commons. Now most commons are whatever but a handful of commons in every 80s Topps/OPC set are super-tough to hit in high grade due to their position on the sheet.

For example, last week, a 1985 Topps Marty Bystrom, total common, PSA 10 went for over $1000.

I think gauging the zeitgeist around a player vs. history is important to determining the velocity of the short/mid/long-term market value. Demand can be a tricky thing. In this case I would ask myself what would drive a buyer to go out and buy a PSA 10 Forsberg RC in the short/mid-term. I think most of that demand are people like you who understand how good Forsberg was, see a market arbitration opportunity in RC price vs. legacy, and invest. In my experience that market will take longer to develop for a cemented legend like Forsberg and essentially it will follow whatever Gretzky's RC is doing in some ratio.

With Draisaitl the price is so high and the demand is increasingly rapidly because he holds a key position in current hockey fandom. He is very visible and in the present. For that reason there is a market of consumers who are buying Draisaitl that probably don't have much interest in older cards.

As far as your 2005-10 collection, in my experience the interest and demand around the collectables of a player spikes around their retirement. It puts them squarely in the great hockey conscious which short-term increases the demand for them if they are superstars.

I am mostly on the opposite end of investing in hype rather than legacy. Objectively it does seem silly that a PSA 10 Makar is $400-500 while a PSA 10 Forsberg is 1/4 the price. But Makar is on the highlight reels every other night. That exposure and hype (I hope) will only increase with ESPN/TNT. Especially for the most talented players.

Nice reply, I agree with a lot.

Where I will diverge is that while a guy like Makar is selling due to TV views, I don't think that lessens the Forsberg RC. For every one collector who knows what a Makar YG looks like, there are 100, maybe 1000 who know what the iconic 91-92 UD Peter Forsberg 1st round draft choice card looks like. He's an icon in his own country as well.

I think the low price right now (low in my opinion) is due to, as always, supply and demand. Demand is high so you constantly see this card sell. But the number of available PSA 10s is high right now too. As they sell, more and more will be locked up into PCs. However, almost all of the PSA 10s out there for sale were slabbed back when the lowest grading fee at PSA was like 10 bucks or less and before the freeze.

Another poster stated that there will be a ton flooding the market of this card from PSA. I strongly disagree. The higher PSA's grading prices, the less likely people will risk grading cards that, when raw, are significantly less in value than the grading fee. And PSA's freeze doesn't help either. If anything, the supply should dry up, the card will go up and then once it goes up enough, people may consider grading raw copies again. And, here's the obligatory, all these old, early 90s cards are condition-sensitive and not easy to find at all in highest grade.

While I know lots about hockey, I've never followed the other markets much so looking for some input here from some who do. A friend approached me who has like 6 rubbermaid containers of cards and is trying to figure out what to do with them. I haven't seen them yet but could anyone weigh in on what carries value in any of these sets:

All of these sets to some extent have singles that are worth good money (triple digits) in PSA 10. Some sets like 1988 Donruss are much weaker than others. The main question is, are these cards in good condition, corners-wise or are they just jumbled around loose?

Also, certain sets will have key singles, usually one single, maybe a couple per set.

Yeah obviously I don't know condition yet, was more curious if anyone knows particulars to look for in those sets or oddball ones that are going high.

I see one card from his basketball listing for $153 K @ 10 and $91 K @ 9.

Yeah and if the condition is relatively pack-fresh, I might be interested. I'm loading up on raw copies of cards and will try to do mass subs to PSA once things are back to normal.

The key with a lot of cards from that era (especially 1988 onwards) is condition, as print runs for many sets were massive. A lot of the cards came out of the factory with major flaws. Look for not only edges and corners, but centering.

A PSA 10 for a lot of those cards has value, but getting a PSA 10, even when pulling straight from packs, can be challenging.

There could also be major moisture issues if the cards weren't properly stored.

For sure. He claims to have taken really good care of them so I am hoping he is right. As any of us who are religious hobbyists know, most people who think they took really good care didn't and most people who think they have a card that looks in great shape often don't.

I did do some scouring of Rorsach's list on sold items on ebay and there are some pretty decent returns on some of those but again, key is getting a high grade, which isn't easy.

Anyway, I will start by having him pull those ones and send me some pictures. Really hoping he has something in there because he has had a real rough 5 years and nothing would make me happier than helping him catch a break. Sounds like he may have a few unopened boxes too.

A little off topic but does anyone have an opinion on o pee chee baseball cards?

Depending on years they are getting more and more desirable especially high grades.
I collect Barry Bonds OPC rookies and they sell way higher than the Topps ones.

There's millions of cards at PSA waiting to be released and lot of them will be 90's junk that will bring up pop counts.

PSA might have lower prices for pre- 2017 cards when they open up in July. No one knows.
But if they are $20-$25 to grade then lots of people will still sending them in.
At $50 less and less.

The population of Forsberg is also double the Selanne....

Either way I would only buy the French ones.

Do you guys think this something worthy of getting graded? I'd say it's better than the psa 9 I saw on ebay tho that only sold for $25.

BTW I believe the guy on the card is actually Jiri Bubla and not Ivan Hlinka.
