Waived: Hickey (NYI) & Clune (NSH) Claimed from Waivers

Hickey cost the Islanders the game. Didn't backcheck hard enough on Kane who tapped in a rebound for the OT winner.

Islander fans thought he had a decent first game. They called it a "rookie mistake" and he should not have been put into that position in his first game on the road. Just going by what their fans said. That team is brutally defensively, so hopefully he doesn't give up the goat too often.

That's not accurate. Hickey was waiting for a one-timer in the high slot when Aucoin completely flubbed the pass. Jets transitioned that unforced turnover into a 2-on-1. Kane just out-skated Hickey.

I am pure garbage at knowing these sort of things but I am almost certain you are right. We don't get first crack at Hickey if he gets waived again. He has to go through the process and if he ends up with us then we can claim him.

At least that is what I remember.

If I am not mistaken, we would have 25% of his salary, NYI would have 25% and then the new team would pay 50% if he is picked up by another team.

??? Nope. Regular waivers never involved splitting salaries. Full remaining salary goes to the claiming team. There is no split, LA is not on the hook for anything.

That was only for re-entry waivers, which have disappeared.

If Hickey is placed back on waivers, he has to go back through the waiver process, but if the Kings are the only other team to put a claim in on him they can send him down to Manchester.

Anyways, I was at Hickey's NHL debut last night, and I think he was average. Didn't get much playing time from what I could see, just 3rd pairing with Carkner. He didn't make many mistakes, but did not stick out either. The last goal Kane outskated him, but Kane is one of the fastest straight line skaters in the NHL, so that's not a huge deal.

Hopefully he gets more chances, but the comments of several NYI posters he played a lot better than Joe Finley, his competition for the #6 role there, and even last night I think he was more consistent and safer than Carkner, but Carkner brings an edge Hickey can't at his size.

Sort of wrong. If he's back on waivers, the way I understand it (might have changed in new CBA but I don't think it did) is that we get first crack at getting him back and we can send him right down to Manch. I'm 99% sure that's how it works but **** changes so who knows.

Almost certain that if any other teams put a claim in on him when he was originally on waivers that the Kings would not be able to send him straight down without having to clear those teams again. 99% that was the way in the old CBA, but I have not reviewed the new waiver rules as of yet.

I think you both have it wrong.

I think if the Isles put him back on waivers within a certain time frame (likely a month or less after first claiming him) then only the teams which put in a claim for him when LA waived him can make a claim again. If none of these teams make a claim, or if there was no other team to make a claim, then LA could reclaim him if they so choose and send him straight to the Islanders.

I believe this is how it worked in the last CBA, but I could be wrong.

Of note, other teams claiming him could even impact if the Islanders want to trade him later, barring any changes to this issue under the new CBA. When the Islanders lost Jason Weimer (flashback moment there) on waivers to the Minnesota Wild, the Wild couldn't trade Weimer without dealing offering him to one of the other two teams to put in a claim on him (ottawa and the Rangers).

Jason Wiemer may become an Ottawa Senator before the end of the trade deadline.
In an interesting scenario, because Wiemer was placed on waivers earlier this season and Ottawa put in a claim on him, if Minnesota tries to trade Wiemer to any other team besides Ottawa or the New York Rangers, the Senators can effectively block the trade. In essence, with the Rangers dumping salary, if Wiemer is to be traded it will have to be to Ottawa, who is reportedly interested in his services. We will see how this pans out before Tuesday.

If this rule is still in place (and it might be gone with two new CBA's in place since then) then the whole waiver claims process would impact on every form for which a player could be removed from the team that claimed him, and not just if he was placed back on waivers. In essence, you claim him, you better keep him, or you'll lose him for nothing.

Would we really want to re-claim a player that couldn't even make the Islanders?

If Hickey couldn't make the Islanders. So far he is still with the team and scheduled to play tonight but I could have missed something.

He is the "quote of the day" on the Isles site.

“A lot of stuff has to do with timing, and sometimes the timing is just not right. They did a good job with getting defensemen and guys that are definitely capable. There was just no room. I’m thankful for the time I spent there, but it’s in the past. I’m not looking back at that.â€

There seems to be a little bit of love for TH after his first game.

Hickey looked fine for the NYI. He got beat by one of the fastest and strongest players in the NHL.

It happens.

Yeah, I watched the game and honestly thought he looked good. He was obviously trying to impress and step up, and until that OT goal, I thought he was accomplishing that. I'll think he'll be fine there and become a 3-4.

I am mostly talking about the people going through withdrawals talking about the hypothetical that he flunks out of New York so they place him back on waivers :P We have too many youngsters on the back-end as is. He has no where to go in LA as long as we have all three of Doughty, Voynov, and Martinez.

That and it was his first game as a rookie in the NHL and there were some nice complements paid him by a couple of the Isles faithful. Some see it as more of a few mistakes that ended up with Hickey doing his best to try and fix things when Kane beat him.

Either way its going to happen to a kid in his first NHL game more often than not.

I agree and thought that was what you were doing (on the hypothetical). Its nice to see TH see exactly what was going on for him in LA and being open and honest with the media. He is a class act kind of kid.

The Isles have him as a 3rd pairing kid and are going to keep giving him a look here and there on the PP or so they have said. I think he makes it.

I have faith Hickey will make the NYI on a perm basis.

The Kid has the skating and the Brains to be an everyday NHL player.

I am Rooting for him.

If this is true, what is the downside of putting in a waiver claim on a player who you know you won't get because some team with higher priority already claimed him? Why not preserve rights by putting in a claim for every single player who is waived and claimed, just in case?

All claims are put in blind. A player is placed on waivers, then is on waivers for 24 hours. All teams have the option of putting in a claim, but nobody knows who else puts in a claim. The NHL then awards the player to the top waiver priority team that put a claim in. Teams are only informed if they are the succesful claim, nobody ever knows who else put a claim in.

It's not a situation where the go down the list offering the player.

So you would then be required to keep that player if you happen to be the claiming team. Sure you could just put a claim on every player and then waive if you don't want, but it costs money (I believe 50K per successful claim) so I don't see teams doing this for players they don't intend to at least try out.

On a side note, Hickey had a really nice game and looked solid against the Pens. The Isles are bringing him along best they can. He was left exposed again tonight but they are a young team who are still growing into their game.

A lot of reasons, most of which Holden cited above.

Additionally though, there are roster limits and when you get a player he is put on your pro roster, so if you are already full, you'd have to waive someone to clear space, the same regarding cap space. And no, you can't just waive the guy as soon as you get him, you are required to keep the player for I believe a month.

If, for example, Pittaburgh put in a claim for everyone that was available on waivers at the start of the season, the fact you have to keep the player if you get him and would have to waive other players to clear roster space would mean they'd soon start waiving regular players and eventually would have to waive their entire line up, including guys like Crosby, Malkin, Fluery, etc. There's a reason teams don't do as you suggest.

I thought he played well, once I actually realized he was playing. I tuned in just before the start of the game, so either I missed the line ups or NBC didn't show them, and the play-by-play guy spends about 90% of the time having debates with Engblom rather than actually call the play, so I didn't even know Hickey was playing until the 2nd period.

From what I seen he looked very calm with the puck for someone in his 2nd game. I think he'd benefit from being paired with someone other than Carkner, who is as flat-footed as they come. Will be interesting to see how things shake out if Visnovsky and Martinek return soon, as they are using Hickey as a 6/7 D-man at the moment. Got to figure at least one of him or Finley is going on waivers in the next month.

Thought I would bump this post for an update on Hickey.

Islander fans believe that they have found a real diamond in the ruff with Hickey and many believe that he is already capable of being a solid 2nd pairing dman. Nobody is saying that he is the second coming, just that he has been solid in all areas and that they want to see him keep doing what he has been doing.

So far it looks like Hickey is proving himself to be a competent NHL Dman with bit of game. So not a total bust so far and in my book seeing him make an NHL team and stick is a good thing. What he does from here is gravy.

Then why is he playing only 10 minutes a game TG?

Also, I think it would be nice if he didn't get paired with Carkner. Hopefully when/if Martinek comes back they put Hickey with him. Carnker looked awful in the one game I got to see of the Islanders this year. To many bad penalties and his skating and mobility just aren't NHl level IMO.

He's playing 10 mins a game because he's playing with Carkner. Seems like a lot of the 3rd pairing D play about 10-14 minutes a night, like Muzz and 44D.

I'm glad to see him staying in the lineup and their fans liking his game. Hope the kid has a really nice career.

Hey KF.

DP pretty much summed it up, he is being paired with a completely lost Carkner who is in teh NHL only due to his size and willingness to play chippy. He is a big slow orange (and blue) cone and Hickey is paired with him so that there can be a solid d man out there with him.

Hickey is well thought of by both the fans and the coaches alike. That said he is still a rookie and earning his way but he is on an NHL roster and playing every night and that is a huge step forward. If he makes it the rest of the season then i will always feel vindicated for backing the kid. I never saw him as a sure fire number one kind of dman but as a solid NHL caliber Dman. That is what I hope to see him ending up becoming.
