It didn't need to rely on nostalgia. It had plenty going for it without Vader.
I rank it over Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and A New Hope. Of course all the gutter trash sequels too.
I’m really curious about your ranking of A new hope here. And you didn’t mention revenge of the sith. I mean I think I understand what that means, but I don’t understand it

I would personally put rogue one and rots at 4 and 5 after the original trilogy but with a pretty healthy gap after jedi.

@LOGiK Dark Urge is wild. I just had to roll 2 or 3 18's in a row to resist killing Shadowheart in camp. If I ever do an evil playthrough I'm 100% doing Dark Urge and just giving in to it all day long

I'm level 8 now, and I think I'm coming to the end of act 2. Though I'd have thought I was coming to the end of act 1 before the Underdark and there was still quite a bit left, so who knows.

I think ep 4 is largely boring. Maybe seen it too many times?
Suffers from a low budget. Gets propped up by nostalgia and loyalty.
I still like it but I can't put it ahead of movies like ROTS, with so many epic moments, just because it's old. Ep 3 is a far more powerful film. I can name like 10 great moments off the top of my head.

I'd give ep 4 the dialogue edge, because the interactions felt more organic. And some green screen work makes ep 3 feel less authentic at points, but that's as far as I'll go.

Empire
RoTS
RoTJ
Rogue
Phantom
Clones
A New Hope
Force Awakens
Rise of Skywalker
Last Jedi

Not gonna rank the Solo film. It felt like a cashgrab sidequest. Would maybe give it a 6.2/10. It's whatever.
I only ranked the sequels because whether we like it or not, they're official episodes.

Meh. Idk. People value different things. Soulless action does little for me. I like movies that make you feel something. If it's cleanly directed and written, that's not enough.
I'd also add that music means more to me than the average viewer. A subpar soundtrack can ruin everything.

man that's nuts to me, but you can have your opinion I guess  I feel like A New Hope is just about the perfect adventure movie. It all fits together perfectly. The characters are great, the music is incredible, the pacing is spot on; it just all works perfectly imo. Meanwhile I think RotS, while still a pretty good movie overall, really falls flat in a lot of places. It's got great ideas, but it's a pretty badly made movie imo. Far and away the best of the prequels, but so much of it just doesn't work for me.

The prequels just have far more compelling stories than ANH. A lot more thought went into them.

I can't call it a perfect adventure movie. The color palette is bland af. Just desert and walls of ships the whole time.
The final duel is complete trash. It looks like a practice session with old men who've never fought before, not masters at work.
There's no real deep character development, outside of Luke.

I find that people are particularly forgiving with that one because it started all of their fond memories of the franchise. And I find a lot of people particularly harsh on the prequels because they didn't want to like them more than the originals from the beginning. They feel like it'd be a betrayal.

If I look at it objectively, ep 4 lacks emotional depth, is visually boring and doesn't have many captivating moments, although it has a few.
The only thing I find perfect about it is the acting and chemistry. But then again they weren't really demanding too much from the actors either.
It's all just overly simplistic, which is fine for an adventure movie. The great ones are more than that. They are expressions of the soul. You leave the theatre moved, not just satisfied with the action and comedic elements. The prequels deliver far more on that front.

TWO or THREE 18's !? Shadowheart is integral!
I'll write response tomorrow... I'm still not sure WHEN a dark urge event is quite honestly. I'll write a proper response in the a.m.

Oh... did you roll three eighteens???

I agree with this sentiment, but I wholeheartedly disagree that the prequels provide that more than ANH. The writing, directing, and acting undermine any of the big emotional beats written into the prequels aside from the shot of Anakin on Mustofar with tears in his eyes. But that doesn’t match luke looking into the dual sunset or the joy of Han coming back.

Also I hate how wasted grevious was. You have this cool four saber robot and then have him in a weird wheel being chased by a lizard and then just shot instead of ever fighting. Give me the simple old man duel from ANH every time.

I used some inspiration and potions to do it but yeah. I had other options that I’m not sure how they’d have worked. I'm honestly curious it I'd eventually kill everyone it I let dark urge dictate every time.

I’m pretty confident at this point you didn’t do dark urge, it's a very common story point for my character. It's the name of a whole section in my quest log etc.

I'll admit I'm more forgiving than most people with directorial and writing faux-pas if the substance of the plot and character development make up for it. I don't hyper-analyze scenes too much. Just want the emotional experience.
It depends on what the viewer cares about.
Bad dialogue usually bothers me in films but in SW's case, cheesy lines are part of its charm. So I just accept it as part of Lucas' style and that universe. I think of the prequels as being made for the 80's, but with more modern tech at their disposal.
For me, Phantom and AoTC had a lot of drama and wholesome moments. More humanity/heart. More diverse settings. More vivid shots.
And a lot of my favorite SW tracks come from those films.
So, while I acknowledge that they had plenty of technical weaknesses, I value a lot of things too.

Grievous never did anything for me as a character. He doesn't feel menacing at all. He's a coward.
And the 4 lightsabers shit is hard to take seriously.
He's a side character Lucas felt he needed because they were lacking antagonist activity early in the plot.
I was just waiting for him to die so his scenes can stop.
So yeah, that's a clear minus for ep 3. Fortunately he didn't get too much screen time.

Star wars? You know who should be the lead and 'saviour'? It would have to be live action, it would be gold to cast --
Shia Leboof
Jokes or not, he's a fantastic actor that clearly didn't handle abuse well and continued the cycle until he finally got help and owned up to it. I mean that's the most you can hope for right?

It's not like he was a piece of shit like Bill Murray or James Franco.

Hell even that one bloke, Army Hammer, he actually was cleared and found to have done nothing and his life was destroyed. Meanwhile people like Lena Dunham continue to have a great career and what Colleen Ballinger did, if she was a bloke, it'd be bigger news.

There are legit pieces of shit like rapist Danny Masterton but stories like Ed Westwick who was target for false allegations lost roles and reputation because someone just wanted to f*** him over, or that laughable "allegations" against Aziz Ansari. But hey, Jamie Foxx is antisemitic but that's ok, he can still be Spawn....

Also the force? Magic isn’t real guys.

For real though, are we attacking Star Wars movie logic? Losing limbs has been nothing but a minor inconvenience since empire strikes back. It means you lost that fight scene, but will immediately replace it and suffer no consequences to your abilities. It’s almost tradition at this point to have injuries be meaningless unless you lose your head. This stuff is popcorn action fantasy, not hard sci-fi. Pointless injuries are a staple of the popcorn action genre, not just a Star Wars thing.

Though like I said, I haven’t seen the recent shows yet so maybe they take it too far?

This is an insanely weak argument and you know it.

If we're discussing a story and the world it lives in, when it starts to stray and play it super fast and loose with established lore, it's fair game to call it out.

Luke lost his hand.
Qui-Gon died from a stab by one.
Maul was cut in half and then they retconned it and brought him back and that's where it starts, as wielding a powerful weapon like a light saber is nothing now, you can survive it.

Imagine the same stab that killed Qui-Gon, is survived by a lesser force sensitive character by a similar wound and somehow feeling yeah that's cool, like Sabine is all yeah mates I'm good, tis but a scratch through my center mass.

The prequels have the bones of a cool story in them and great soundtrack, I'll give you that. Sadly I really don't think they actually tell a good story on screen imo. Overall I think what really holds it back for me is that Anakin's turn just doesn't land. It's supposed to be the huge emotional moment but it just feels so off. They needed more time for showing some doubt and flaws of the Jedi leading up to it, and also maybe don't jump to immediately slaughtering children and then try to act like he's still conflicted afterword

Killing off Maul was such a blunder. They had this awesome villain with personal history with the main character and just throw him away. At least Clone Wars saved him, but think how much better the movies are with him in all three.

Like I said, I haven't seen the new shows. They certainly could have taken it too far. But injuries have always been nonexistent in star wars; you either die or it goes away immediately.

Which actually reminds me of one of Force Awakens and Last Jedis worst bits in the cliffhanger ending of very injured Finn to him just being perfectly fine and joking about it immediately. Come on Disney, at least pretend to have a plan movie to movie.

I'm still shocked at how they went about that. So much responsibility when making the sequels, and they had Abrams and Johnson barely collaborating at all. They each just did their own thing. No surprise when the trilogy doesn't feel cohesive in the slightest.
Abrams picked up the pieces from TLJ and realized "Oh shit, he didn't progress the story in the direction I want, and now I have to produce a super rushed movie in order to get to all the shit I had planned in 2.5 hours".

So we go from a snail's pace for chunks of ep 7 to an electric pace in ep 9, where he was forced to make a lot of important omissions.
I can't believe Disney allowed this to happen, with everything we know about what good storytelling requires.
Not to mention the transition from ep 7 to 8 and how they felt like different franchises.
They just winged it and hoped for the best. Ridiculous.

This could have been mapped out better by high schoolers.

Yeah inspiration is good to bank exactly for those kind of do or die situations. I serial kill murdered every single gob in the gob camp (for bragging about their raid on the inn) and the big orc guy and set the owlbear babe free (hopefully to come back to camp) then I get inside the goblin fort and it is MOORRRRRREEE goblins I don't have the time or patience to serial murder  so I just walked through with deception. I have the priestess alone and side tracked toget that nightsong thing, finally figured out the puzzle and snuck by the gigantic guard by my summons bear, she don't like him she forgot about me haha.

Dark urge, I am beginning to think I turned it off. I woke up in a dream with le'zel at my throat with a knife (because i was in cold sweats (((probably a regular story progression I was guessing))) and could have killed her - or fought her- there. But you really have different things going on it seems... I never had an evil/hostile/malevolent out of character type moment kind of deal.... did i? Is there any way to check if DU is on or off?
I stockpile inspirations, just for these moments because some dice rolls you just can not lose. Either by way of leading directly to a massive battle ill prepared or losing a key piece of outcome.

I was looking at mods for the first time. I was going to do spells refresh after short-rest. ADD ALL 5e spells not in the game or in the game done incorrect (so they say?) and a fix for concentration spells (because they are so limiting to be less limiting)...

Was going to add them then I saw the short rest one needs to recompile the main story, so you have to do it on a new game (waah wahh wahhhh) so that is done for now. And the all 5e spell update I couldn't log in to nexus with some phony server error whatever. So I remain vanilla.

My party has some pretty wonky-level gear I'd say we are still rag and tag more huff fluff and puff than we have bite. I mean we have some blue gear but it is most part not really for that class/unused trigger buff etc but... how is your party? Good gear? Greens or blues or legendary stuff? When did you get out of scrub party gear? Did pink gear show up in act 2 (legendary)?

Level 8? Goooodnessssss. I spent way too much time looting and pickpocketing the gob merchant in camp and really have to pick up the pace.... I do see a gigantic store room of explosive powder in the goblin temple thing :madfire: so I may just rescue the druid find the nightsong - maybe maybe maybe save that eejit volvo :eviltongu
(personally-- outside of the inn raid on wes... whatever the inn name was, I have no quarrels with the gobbo's. They never fought me once, come to think of it they were after someone else every single fight. Or I was doing something for someone else to lead to fight. So I have no real problem with these peoples, gobs are peoples too =]

One thing I do find odd that none of you fans mentioned is how apparently being hit or stabbed by a lightsaber is nothing. Get shanked by one and all good, you're good to go for the second episode.

A powerful weapon only when it needs to be otherwise it's just sort of there and if you get hurt by one you'll survive just fine. Even a stabbing.
I mean they kinda ruined that with Episode 9. Rey and Ben were healing anything and everything they wanted. But it seems like they stab at least 1 person a series now who stays alive.

You wouldn't need to turn it off, it's not on by default. It starts on Custom and you have to choose to play as Dark Urge as your background. It's on the same screen as where you can choose to play as Astarian or Shadowheart etc.
I was looking at mods for the first time. I was going to do spells refresh after short-rest. ADD ALL 5e spells not in the game or in the game done incorrect (so they say?) and a fix for concentration spells (because they are so limiting to be less limiting)...

I'm still mostly against recharging spells on short rests, but less than I was before. On one hand, it just makes the casters way better and takes away Warlock's one advantage over them. On the other hand, it's so easy to long rest that it's kind of already how it works, it just takes longer.

I would be suspicious of people adding and fixing how spells work in the game, because typically random folks aren't as good at designing games as game designers  Also I have no idea what's wrong with concentration spells, they work exactly how they're supposed to. Unless it's just another pure buff for casters, who are already the best characters for most of the game (probably around level 5 or 6. Higher level spells are just so good.

I have done almost no pickpocketing, especially since I killed my Rogue  Also I actually just did the nightsong quest this weekend. That's a longer trail that leads into act 2.

I didn't really plan to kill all the goblins, but I made someone in the fort mad at me in a conversation and all hell broke loose

Yeah it's essentially a joke now. The original movie made it a sacred thing to be a Jedi and wield a Lightsaber.

Then the new shit, it's like oh cool, look at me, I am a pro now, also being stabbed by one is no big deal.

Qui-Gon be like...

Lol.

Speaking of that, I wonder what they could do with the Sith Jedi wars from canon. If everyone is getting a saber, might as well do that!

1 We spoke about it last time, I still can not remember one box in the whole of that character creation! There has to be some game file with my character profile to read the code if DU is yes or no.

2 It is. It is so simple, just time consuming as to not have to mod it and RESET game. Not that big of a deal. Second go, sure. Maybe, things happen when you sleep.

3 It's not a priority for I use no casters. It's adding spells Larian left out or used incorrectly - not too familiar on 'pure' anything nor what spells are / are not supposed to be and a subclass can't be used correctly with concentration spells limiting it... I donno and I am too lazy to quote.
Many modders are game designers though.

4. It does take time.... so much gear has just enough pop but not particularly for that class and I have to use it. Combat and out of combat I swap gear  the insta-spells are needed from differing gear it gets tedious  So you achieved a balance by 8 (i'm almost 5) yeah I can see 3 more levels worth of gear --that I most certainly WILLLLL NOTTTTT be giving to Gabe to eat-- gabe? gale... whatever... =P

5. It's handy for small stuff... large blue gear you'll never get (when you need it most, early) BUT I did try to pick the blue armour from the goblin shop in the camp party, got caught, struck him down... looted his body and it did still have the good blue bit I tried to pocket. So, I didn't try this theory but it's a working theory -- if you really want to pick something with class, it will most likely fail, but the price is blood for you no longer have a shop keep with gear / funds for junk.

6. haha... it is oh so easy to do that =]
the thing is.... goblins appreciate the insults, as in 'they stink or they smell or they are aren't smart and don't like to read' etc etc  Every insult I picked to them in the party they liked haha.... took it as a compliment... well, they weren't higher up ones though... so yeah.
--- that goblin temple thingy place has rafters up there with soooooooo many options to inflict pain to the gobbo's (spiders / chandelier's etc etc) ...

Just checked. That is a no.
Can you deny the urge the whole time? Or does it force you into stuff?
And if you deny the urge does that influence something?
Didn't you lose companions to the urge? ((((outside of already having to almost optionally kill them without the dark urge on???!!! ))))))

After all this time I've rescued volvo and liam (from the druid camp initially) and I'm about to save Haslin, which is in bear form... lucky I found that out from the prisoner Liam - or I may have mistaken him for a wild bear. ***but I examined him before anything (as I do most times and before battles and it says he is a level 5 druid. So that is/was another clue not to kill him***

That torturer guy was about to do something torture wise to me to release some pain but he glitched out to my bear familiar which I'm guessing is from his encounter with Haslin... because he says "NO NOT AGAIN" and runs away  So I ended him and took his weapons, which are decently cool green gear.

(still didn't do the 3 goblin kill quest line, not sure if I will really. (I still do serial murder them when I can single them out (they almost always follow and chase my bear into dark corners :wg: ))

800xp I think away from the big lvl 5 ! !

I can deny it a lot of the time no problem, but it seems to be hinting that denying it may be what's building up into the bigger blow-ups? Sometimes there are saves too. The time I lost a companion to the Urge wasn't directly. I killed someone else because of the urge, and then instead of hiding it I came clean and a companion tried to kill me for it, so I had to kill them instead  But it's still kind of a mystery to me (in and out of character).

I was still being reasonable at the torture guy and convinced him to let me take over, so he just left and then I saved the guy. I don't actually remember at what moment it became a goblin genocide. I think I managed to have conversations that started peacefully with all three people you're supposed to kill. Oh right, one of them has a war horn or a drum or something nearby to alert everyone like an alarm and I didn't realize it, so one of their little goblin buddies got to it. It was the last one, I think the hobgoblin guy area. I had actually already killed the other two (again, not intending to pick fights but did anyway) before I ever had a quest asking me to

5 is a big level for everyone getting a lot stronger if you're sticking with a single class for everyone.
