Just curious, any thoughts on Todd Nelson as a coach? How would you say Hunter Shepard played?
I am torn on Shepard. He was a beast in the game, 30+ saves, the Bears took a ton of penalties so he was under fire a lot. Two sides to this, he let up a lot of juicy rebounds right in the slot and around the net, however he composed himself and made the 2nd and 3rd save. I would have to assume at the next level, he isn't making the 2nd save let alone the 3rd as often. Honestly, he can be a great AHL goalie for a long time. He is listed at 6'1 I don't see how that is accurate, he looked tiny in net compared to Louis Domingue who was in for Hartford. I sat 4 rows behind the net.
I have been thinking about Nelson after the game, I don't think he would have to win the Calder Cup to be considered in my mind but I would like to see how the next few rounds go, Hartford was not great.
With that being said, the Bears were significantly outplayed in the first, shots were probably 10/12-4 after 1. A lot of that is probably Hartford desperate and less about systems. Coming out of the 1st though the Bears were methodical in the 2nd and 3rd, quietly dominate, which to me screams coaching adjustments which is what we all want in the playoffs so that is a big up in my mind. The Bears probably took 5-6 penalties and only had a penalty shot and a goal on a delayed penalty - no actual PP- so it was choppy but it seemed like halfway through the 2nd the Bears controlled the game and were not gonna lose.
The other thing I like about Nelson is his line combos, seems to be a really good mix of older and younger players on the same line or d-pairs, McMichael and Iorio were out on the PK and at the end of the game, another plus in my opinion for the Caps.
