I was at the game last night. A few takeaways:

1. Iorio is legit, even before he scored -great shot- he was so calm and poised breaking up zone entries, easy breakouts, tons of anticipation, and some pretty good hands. I am easily convinced but I think the Caps have something here.

2. McMichael played like he was a crafty old vet. So effortless on the faceoffs, I haven't seen the stats but he seemed to dominate. His assist was a POP great play. Don't love him on the PK. I think he is ready.

3. Lapierre and Protas underwhelmed. Protas was noticeable on the forecheck but Lapierre was a ghost out there.

4. Frank is a little pinball out there. I don't know how it translates to the NHL but if he could change his game into a Chimera type player I could see him sticking.

Just curious, any thoughts on Todd Nelson as a coach? How would you say Hunter Shepard played?

I am torn on Shepard. He was a beast in the game, 30+ saves, the Bears took a ton of penalties so he was under fire a lot. Two sides to this, he let up a lot of juicy rebounds right in the slot and around the net, however he composed himself and made the 2nd and 3rd save. I would have to assume at the next level, he isn't making the 2nd save let alone the 3rd as often. Honestly, he can be a great AHL goalie for a long time. He is listed at 6'1 I don't see how that is accurate, he looked tiny in net compared to Louis Domingue who was in for Hartford. I sat 4 rows behind the net.

I have been thinking about Nelson after the game, I don't think he would have to win the Calder Cup to be considered in my mind but I would like to see how the next few rounds go, Hartford was not great.

With that being said, the Bears were significantly outplayed in the first, shots were probably 10/12-4 after 1. A lot of that is probably Hartford desperate and less about systems. Coming out of the 1st though the Bears were methodical in the 2nd and 3rd, quietly dominate, which to me screams coaching adjustments which is what we all want in the playoffs so that is a big up in my mind. The Bears probably took 5-6 penalties and only had a penalty shot and a goal on a delayed penalty - no actual PP- so it was choppy but it seemed like halfway through the 2nd the Bears controlled the game and were not gonna lose.

The other thing I like about Nelson is his line combos, seems to be a really good mix of older and younger players on the same line or d-pairs, McMichael and Iorio were out on the PK and at the end of the game, another plus in my opinion for the Caps.

Game 2 of Rochester/Hershey is also being televised on WPMT Channel 43 in York (Fox affiliate in south central Pennsylvania). NBC Sports Washington is picking up that broadcast of the game.

Pretty even first period, second we looked out of sorts until the last handful of minutes. Really impressive crowd energy for a Thursday night. Roof felt like it was going to blow off on the second goal. 2-0 bears after 2. Woohoo!
