Bears with a big 6-3 W in Charlotte! A team that was previously just six pts back and an arena that they've struggled in.

Frank, Vecchione (x2), Borgstrom, Sgarbossa, McMichael with the goals (Vecch's second and Mikey's were ENs)

Rematch same time, same place tomorrow.

For a game that was 6-3 it was really a defensive battle most of the time. Some thoughts...

Fucale played well and came up big when we needed him.

Frank was Frank. Scored a nice one timer on the PP and used his speed to manufacture a breakaway he didn't convert on. Gotta get this kid signed once they reassess the contract limit situation after the deadline.

Iorio played well. Telling that with a 4-3 lead a minute to go he was in the ice defending the lead. Made a nice play to help get us the 5-3 ENG and lock the game away. Just steady overall all night. Not sure if he's ready next year, could probably use one more year of cooking but that all depends on how many opening on the blue line in DC we end up with.

McMike was pretty good. Had a nice point shot in the PP that got deflected and went in. Originally they credited him with the goal but switched it to Vecchioni who clearly touched it. He made sure to get an open lane, wrist it with enough speed to create chaos but kept it low and easy to deflect. Also he had a nice retrieval on a failed 2 on 1 that led to a goal. And drew a penalty with speed late in the game, led to Sgarbossa scoring as the extra attacker on a delayed call.

Nardella is so smooth. He can really dish the puck. Nice hands. He has a great look away pass.

Malenstyn played well. Getting some PP time and plenty of PK time. Ripped one off the post on the PP in the first. He's such a fantastic PKer he's going to carve out a career in the NHL with somebody if it isn't us.

Lowlights...

Sgarbossa had a 3 point night but brutal turnover on Charlotte's first goal. He's a leader and can't make that pass.

Jake Massie got lost and blew coverage on Charlotte's second goal. Chased the checkers player into the corner while we already had a forward chasing him. Left his man wide open in front of the net. He was noticably bad on a few coverages tonight. He did have a fight early on but he was terrible overall.

In other not NHL hockey news... Went to an NAHL game... My team downed the mighty Maryland Black Bears(who Tarik's son plays for). Fantastic game for the Tomahawks who has a player I'm really interested to see how he develops in college next year, Ethan Perrault. Got some time with the US development team when they had injuries this year and looked terrific(albeit as an overager) Has some pro potential for sure.

4-3 shootout win for the Bears.

Might sound weird considering they blew a two goal lead in the 3rd, but they came back and had a decent game overall given that they only had two shots in the 1st. Holding leads has been a concern all year for this team.

They killed off a 4-on-3 pp late in overtime. Malenstyn had a big block and clear towards the end of it.

Another uninspired effort tonight. 4- loss.
There was some shoddy officiating (Sens getting away with behind the play mugging that the Bears were called for) that eventually evened out. But holy hell is their pp awful. With the personnel they have, their pp should frankly not be below top 5 let alone 20ish or so. Sometimes they get too cute, and I hate hate hate the neutral zone drop pass and powerplay dump and chase that they seem to employ regularly. They actually had their asses saved on a Belleville 2-on-0 by a behind-the-play penalty on the Senators... only for Belleville to score a go-ahead shorthanded goal (McMichael got completely faked out by the Senator one on one). And somehow their powerplay ranking is almost ten spots higher than it was a month and a half ago!

A lot of their deficiencies have been present all year, but they were able to outscore them before. Inability to hold a lead, anemic powerplay, etc. Now the offense is a lot more sporadic/hot and cold and it bites them in the ass. I'm not sure if the trade deadline will bring anyone new in, especially if the Caps continue to sell, but if their issues persist I see this team being a first round out if I'm being honest.

Also postgame was the meet the team party for season ticket holders. The first and only other one I went to in 2005 was a skating party and pretty fun even though I couldn't skate and just walked on the ice. It was kind of like the autograph nights they have each year, except the players were free roaming instead of stationed at chairs around the ice. This was basically an assembly line with the players all at one long table on the concourse. I know in years past it's been on season ticket pickup night but they didn't do it then this year because a lot of the players were in the Caps' training camp. I'm not sure if those were the same tonight but I didn't like how rushed it was. I'm not looking to sit down and chat with these guys like they're my best buds but some of my stops were so rushed some of the players didn't even really have a chance to say the standard "how are you doing" or anything. No chance for pictures either. Definitely prefer autograph night and will probably just keep attending those in the future and skip the STH event (if it's the same format). No one was a jackass or anything, it was just disappointingly rushed. Silver lining, at least I got everyone's autograph (except Lapierre- he left the game early- not sure if he got hurt?- but I got him on autograph night in December).

Did still manage a couple fun interactions. Morelli (who's been a really friendly, personable guy both times I've met him) got a kick out of the Stockton Heat puck I had him signed (as did Malenstyn, who was next to him). I had to help him open the puck case I had it in because he couldn't get it, lol. That was the interaction I think caused me to slow down a little, if I'm being honest. Massie ("did you make these yourself??") and Carlsson sitting beside him. both were impressed by the custom cards I made for everyone.

Custom cards? Let’s have a look @Strawberry Fields (if you don’t mind sharing)
For the players I met on autograph night in December, I used the pictures of me with them, so I won't be posting those, but here's some of the cards of players I didn't get to meet. This is the standard template I use when sending through the mail, I just think it's cool to have players sign something I made.

That is pretty neat!! In years past, when it was still "ok" to meet players around back after the game, I'd take my daughter back there. She'd get pics with guys, then come back later with printed copies & get them signed. I figure she may not remember the games, but she will remember those interactions.

We did not stay last night. I'm curious how long it went on for. When we left the game, the line was stretched out into the parking lot.

We left to get in line pretty shortly after the 10 minute mark of the third so we weren't too far back in line (unfortunately, it's become a trend this year where I dont have faith in them to come back, so I was comfortable leaving). We were close enough that we could see the start of the line, in fact. I was pretty underwhelmed by the event as it was. I would've been even unhappier if I waited out the door for it. Not sure how it usually is, but seemed like a hastily thrown together afterthought and the assembly line format is just not my thing. I'd much rather have an autograph night type event- where I'm not guaranteed to meet everyone, but get better interactions with the players I do meet. Like I said, I'm not trying to chat everyone up like we're best friends, but you'd think people shelling out money to have season tickets would at least be afforded the opportunity to interact with the players a little at an event specifically for them- or at least get pictures with them!

I know in years past it's been held on ticket pick up night. The skating party they held in 2005 was a random off-Sunday in October. I think it would've been better to have it on an off day- so the players aren't coming up tired from a game (that, in this case, they disappointingly lost). Last night I asked my brother, "would it kill them to NOT shit the bed on a night they're supposed to be meeting fans afterward?" 😆

Also: a candid of Fucale where he appears to be looking at the camera, but I'm pretty sure it's just a coincidence.View attachment 658237
Looking at that table I had a flashback to the College World Series. I use to live in Omaha and the day before the CWS began the Omaha World Herald would sponsor a similar event where all the players of the colleges participating in the series would be seated along tables such as these within the bowels of Rosenblatt Stadium. The World Herald would provide one baseball to each attendee (it was a free event) for autographs. BTW, this was in the early 90s and you could buy a ten pack of bleacher seats from the local Food Market chain Bakers for $20 (that's right $2 a ticket to sit in the bleachers in the outfield).

I've also had an ongoing project in which I sent to every North America based prospect drafted in 2022. As far as I remember I've gotten every Capitals pick back except Chesley (didn't sent to the European guys- Canadian postage is a big enough hassle as it is, lol). Also sent to various other prospects including Brent Johnson as seen below.

Bears have reclaimed first in the Atlantic for now with a 5-3 win over the Baby Pens.

Hershey has three games against Providence (who they're neck and neck with for first in the division) in the next week and a half or so.

Be there for one of them this weekend. Hopefully they can pick up some points. I've been a jinx lately.

This is super cool but I just have one snarky comment — all of these guys except Brent Johnson have handwriting like they’re in kindergarten

Brent Johnson writes like he’s a 4th grader, so a slight improvement over his fellow draftees.
