You can build a solid core foundation with mid round picks, but I think it's very tough to take the next step as consistent cup contenders without one or more lottery picks developed into elite talent on the roster. (Assuming you don't hit the jackpot with late round picks and grab an elite player or two)
I disagree, this team is laughably bad and Henrik covers up a lot of gaffes of the roster.

Bruins 5th overall pick in 2006 was Phil Kessel. Kessel was traded for Seguin Hamilton and Spooner. A 1st line RWer, a potential top pair defenseman and solid forward prospect.
Jumping into discussions 2 pages after with comments that has already been cleared is cool. If you want to look even smarter you can explain the the salary cap is.

If that were the case, I would want Hank traded since a player should never be above the team. Luckily, that is not the case.

I have said I'd listen to offers for him. It's not my first choice, but this team is still multiple pieces away from being a top contender. He has had a lot of wear and tear in the last 6-7 years playing in so many games when the team has been unable to give him much breathing room in terms of scoring goals; mentally, that has to wear on him. To re-sign him to a 6-8 year deal at or near the cap max doesn't make much sense if you want to build a team around him that can win a Cup.
Overall, this team still needs some rebuilding to do, and trading Lundqvist is a way to continue to do that. He's still young enough that you can get a good return for him, and a team can still sign him to a decent length extension if they so choose.

The 2000-2005 rangers were the 'laughably bad' teams and they never managed to suck enough for the lottery

That was largely because of Lundqvist. He was the teams best player, bar none, in each of the last two post seasons where they reached the 3rd and 2nd round.
I know Lundqvist loves New York. But I think before he retires, he will want to win it all. And I think he will place that above his desire to stay in New York.
Ultimately, I think next season will have a lot to do with whether or not he stays in New York. If the Rangers once again struggle getting to the post season, where he has to carry the team to a 6th-8th spot, and the team can't make it past the 2nd round again, I think he will legitimately consider going elsewhere.
I think fans who don't think that is a possibility are fooling themselves. He's a competitive professional athlete first, a resident of New York second.

Well, if he did do such a thing, it would be because torts is ineffective. I don't know what goes on in the locker room, but if a coach is ineffective it'd be good for the players to call him out on that.

Didn't Lundqvist have an e-problem with Renney too? That guy is sure an e-diva.
I'm not saying there is a particular destination, a lot can change from today, until the end of 13-14, where some options will inevitably open up for him over that period of time.
If I was him I would consider Pittsburgh as an option. Malkin will be re-signed to an almost identical contract ($8-8.7 million a year), the Penguins will re-sign Letang at a high cap hit obviously, but they can either move Fleury freeing up $5 million in cap space or buy him out. Vokoun's $2 million will come off the books. And if Pittsburgh had a legitimate chance of landing Lundqvist, I don't think Shero would have a problem moving a modest cap hit of a depth player.
