Post-Game Talk: Hellebuyck and the Paper Jets beat leafs 4-3

We've been goalied 3 games in a row.

What an annoying losing streak.

But adversity is good right?
Sometimes adversity is good but we have already had a few decades of adversity. The names and faces change but the result is always the same. Leafs either start out good and slide or start out poor then pick it up, then come playoffs it’s total failure.
I have been a Leaf fan for 4 decades and it sure would be nice to see them win it all

Andersen hasnt been impressive this year, but he didnt have a chance on at least two of those goals.

Would anyone be interested if they tried to get Rinne at the trade deadline? He's not having the best year but the Preds haven't been good either. The guy has had playoff success in the past. I just don't see Fred carrying us any where in the playoffs

well pekka is a pending UFA too. I don't see why it should be an issue. It depends on how much trust we have in Freddy. Given Freddy's playoff struggles - don't think it should be an issue to swap goalies and hope for the best.

even if we made the playoffs how much faith do we have in Freddy to carry us in the playoffs anyway.... I would be fine with tradeing one pending UFA for another.

Unless management believes in Freddy or has plans to re-sign him; I don't see why this trade should be an issue

What "chance" did Helly have on some of the saves he made tonight?

Honestly, if either of the first two hit his shoulder because he's a little quick or playing a little bigger we don't think twice about those saves as quality opportunities. Make either of those and you don't see the fourth chance. Third goal was nice, but we saw that okay saved a few times recently

Even the almighty Tampa team last year lost 4 games in a row at one point.

It's kind of insane to consider that Tampa has as good/better skaters as we have, but then also have their own Helle.

How do we beat that?

We need Matthews to go insane, and need some goals from the 2nd line. Would take a lot of things going right.

Andersen isn't really below average as a starter. His problem is sudden, dramatic and catastrophic meltdowns in high pressure or high stakes situations where he needs to be a positive difference maker.
That’s is by far the best assessment in Andersen. Andersen just can’t make the key save to help his team.

Do we base it on the season? The series? The season series?
I think we have to look at trends. What direction are we heading.
I’m just not sure if this team can win with that way it’s constructed.
I honestly hope I’m wrong

Yeah, what a disappointment. He looked so good the first 20+ games and he's fallen off cliff lately. How?
he can't have been that good

his season save % is somewhere near .900 and that is gawd awful

just to give that scale,,.900 puts you around #31 for tenders with 10 + starts

Andersen hasnt been impressive this year, but he didnt have a chance on at least two of those goals.

He got beat by an NHLer on the game winner, but the breakdown was first on Brodie and then on Rielly. Why Brodie went for that wide lazy shinny sweep check and then Rielly does the same thing while his partner is recovering slowly makes no sense. By the time it got to Andersen, who was also asleep, there wasn't anything left to do. That was a 3 man team effort.

Oh yeah he definitely is. I mean, at his best, 3-4 years ago, he was maybe recognized as a top 10 goalie in the league; not even elite. Certainly he has dropped a couple of grades since then, the eye test and likely statistically it would be validated.
but yes, even at his best he was a choker.
That said, he isn’t awful, just borderline okay.

So how could Andersen not be diving across the crease on that fourth goal? Does anyone ever see a number one goalie not even move. Thats some serious concentration issues right there. Not to even mention he was almost falling out the other side of the net. That was the grossest goal i seen all year. He gunned off Matthews to for his kick goal. Get rid of this clown

So if he was competent we win 3-2. It is a fine line, but if you consistently let in even one bad goal a game, you suck

I have faith Fred can find his game, but this year is very important and the Leafs hands seem pretty tied to make any deadline deal under the cap.

I'm not against moving him for a lower risk lower reward goalie to play in front of Campbell. It could also free up some much needed cap space to make the team that's actually really good in front of him even better. I'd think only a desperate team would be interested in him though.

At least Matthews found some ways to score despite his wrist, gotta be good for his confidence.

Rumor was Rinne was one of the few Predators not for sale.

I think his problem is more of a reliability issue than an ability issue. In a lot of ways he discourages the Leafs from playing a cautious, low scoring 2-1 game because he has a greater likelihood of giving up the GWG. Whatever a money goalie is in the classic Grant Fuhr, Patrick Roy sense, he's the other guy at the end of the ice.

I change of scenery might be good for both of them.
As for faith in Freddie in the playoffs I've seen nothing in the past or present that makes me feel comfortable that he can do something special under pressure. Not sure what Rinne has left in the tank but he's won playoffs series in the past, in low scoring situations.

Re: Freddie, this is very dangerous thinking, because any situation where you're counting on him to step up, you're just setting him up for a bigger fall.

I don't understand the forced shots from Marner.
I just don't get them at all.

You have the best goal scorer in the league with 3 great playmakers on the ice and one of them tries to force shots far too often. They're muffins and get blocked way more often than not.

I just don't get it.
