Happy 21 st Birthday to the young Finn today!

Now the young man can have a drink legally after the game on a US road trip.

Thanks for the reminder.

Now Someone needs to photoshop a fancy cocktail onto that Ville Sanders meme -- calling on @macmaroon and others with the skills to help celebrate Vills!

Happy Birthday, hopefully our next coach appreciates his skill set .

... but how is he in the room???

Defence, schmefence. If the kid isn't MarkStuarting guys at the blue line or blowing them up long after they've skated past or through him, blocking the goalie's sightlines by standing in the crease as the puck whirls round him, using the ol' patented reverse pass straight to the opposition, throwing blind panicpasses up the middle, finally rimming the puck out with all the force of a sickly and exhausted hamster, falling over at the blue line with a "timely pinch," lumbering up-ice with the puck and tripping over his skate laces/ crack in the ice/ phantom bear trap and losing it instantly, then he ain't ready for prime time.

Besides, as per Dave Lowry, Ville is playing too well as he adjusts to the NHL. So it's important that he go down a level to relearn all those important things he's already NHL-level or above at.

Nate Beaulieu-level talent doesn't just grow on trees. It's painstakingly developed.

Coach on, Big Dave. Coach on.

To me this misuse is a fireable offense, since it reveals that Lowry's not capable of evaluating talent. What more could Heinola possibly do to 'earn' a spot? Speak English better? (Maurice always put a lot of stock into what the players say on the bench - not sure what else H does poorly...). Does he need a haircut? The ONLY thing I've heard as an excuse is that we don't need as much skill. :help:

Are they hyperfixating on one or two mistakes that led to goals against? Yet giving free passes to Beaulieu? If anyone needs to learn how to play hockey better at the AHL level, it's him... But he's not waiver exempt.

Beaulieu and Heinola have been comparably bad this year. Heinola is a little bit better number wise but then again Beaulieu has outscored him 3 to 1..

I'm also looking at trajectory - when Heinola got a few games in a row, he was gaining traction and improving. Beaulieu is a known quantity.

Same arguments were levied at Perfetti, but once he had a serious run of games with players that could keep up with his brain, most people changed their tune. His metrics aren't world-beating, because they include the learning curve.

When you have two comparably bad players, a wise move is to play the one that will be better 10 games from now if you play them now consistently (especially with 30 games left). But that kind of projection is very difficult for certain personalities because their strength lies in other areas. If we had played Heinola all last year and this year when he was healthy, there's an extremely high chance he would have significantly better metrics than Beaulieu now (and possibly others on D).

They really haven't. Boo has two more assists in 3 times as many games, and from a shot metrics standpoint is the worst D-man on the team. Heinola had a rough first couple of games, and since then has looked really good, both from an eye test and from a shot metrics standpoint.

Though the last part is unfair, because I'm comparing a 29 year old who time after time has proven that he's not NHL level to a 20 year old who, as expected, is improving.

I would be willing to send a shout-out to @AlphaLackey and drop a bet on it. Although, unlike the Jets' coaching staff, I doubt we'd find an oddsmaker who backed Beaulieu over Heinola (or Stanley, or soon Samberg).

I think it's a simple case of what a vet brings in the room and on the ice as a known quantity, however lousy that quantity is, and a coaching superstition that legislates going with the "hot hand/ stick."

Heinola is NHL ready and has nothing to learn in the AHL. Clearly he is going to have an adjustment period converting to a full time NHL player but it's shortsighted not giving him that opportunity the remainder of the year.

Skill wise, I agree with the bold -
If there is a problem, it is related to size / strength - that is where he struggles.
He should be working on building up his strength - I hope that is where they have him focused at this point.

Heinola to the press box!

Maybe he platoons with Stanley, and sees some minutes against teams that aren't "heavy."

Emergency recall suggests that the Jets D are really hurting and unable to field a full three pairings -- Pionk is clearly playing through injury and I wonder if Stanley's shot block last night is still lingering.

If they're going to bring him up they better play him. If it's just to sit in the PB they could have brought up someone else. VH needs to keep playing.

Get him into the lineup unless they are clearly showcasing someone to move prior to the deadline.

I may understand the rules wrong, but since they called him up under emergency recall, they have less than 6 healthy D. Hence the only way he doesn't play is if a player gets healthy and he is sent back down again, change it to a regular recall or play with 5D.

Yep. See below. I suspect he comes in for Stanley or Pionk, if he plays.

He should play every game from now till the end so that we know what we have in him and if they can pencil him in for a spot next season.

Yup, him, Cole and possibly Gus should play out the stretch with the Jets so that we can get them ready to contribute at a good level next year.
